Essa pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar os elementos históricos e culturais entre as Coletividades Enawene Nawe e a sociedade não indígena, assim como as alianças e conflitos vivenciados com os grupos indígenas Nambikwára, Cinta Larga e Rikbáktsa. O trabalho utiliza-se de fontes bibliográficas e documentais sobre os Enawene Nawe, como diários dos religiosos Vicente Cañas e Thomaz de Aquino Lisbôa, narrativas dos mitos e ritos, imagens e mapas que, com base em aportes teóricos da cultura e da etnicidade, são analisadas por meio de uma metodologia qualitativa. Os resultados apresentam um histórico dos Enawene Nawe, o tradicional território, elementos socioculturais do povo e o contexto dos contatos interétnicos, analisando as escolhas feitas pela etnia no sentido da continuidade dos costumes, tradições, crenças e rituais, mesmo após o contato com a sociedade não indígena e as ressignificações culturais e simbólicas vividas por esse povo. / Based on the premise of social relevance of the debate on indigenous issues in Brazil, as well as the regional uniqueness of Mato Grosso, this study deals with inter-ethnic contacts experienced by people Enawene Nawe in the 1970s and 1980s, at the top of the watershed River Juruena. This research aims to analyze the historical and cultural elements between collectivities Enawene Nawe and non-indigenous society, as well as the experienced alliances and conflicts with indigenous groups Nambikwára, Cinta Larga and Rikbaktsa. The work makes use of bibliographic and documentary sources on the Enawene Nawe, such as [diaries of the religious] Vicente Cañas and Thomaz de Aquino Lisbôa, narratives of myths and rituals, images and maps based on theoretical contributions of culture and ethnicity are analyzed through a qualitative methodology. The results present a history of the Enawene Nawe, the traditional territory, socio-cultural elements of the people and the context of inter-ethnic contacts analyzing the choices made by ethnicity in the sense of the continuity of customs, traditions, beliefs and rituals even after contact with non-indigenous society and cultural and symbolic reinterpretation experienced by these people.

Esta tese é um estudo da ecologia e da cosmologia dos Enawene-Nawe, povo de língua Aruak, habitante da Amazônia Meridional, na faixa de transição entre o Cerrado e a Floresta Tropical. Sua abordagem está voltada para a interface cultura/natureza e, com base no material etnográfico, examina a hipótese de que a cultura é a condição genérica e primeira, e a natureza um momento particular e secundário, resultado de um processo de diferenciação da cultura – concepção diametralmente oposta à teoria evolutiva, típica do pensamento científico moderno. / This thesis is a study of the ecology and cosmology of the Enawene-Nawe, people of the Aruak language, inhabitants of the southern Amazon, in the transitional region between the savanna and the tropical forest. The study explores the interface culture/nature and, based upon ethnographic material, examines the hypothesis that culture is a generic and primary condition and nature a particular moment and secondary, the result of a process of cultural differentiation – a concept diametrically opposed to the theory of evolution, typical of modern scientific thinking.

The research is based on the principles that deal with the passage of a model that is founded in endogamic and territorially disperse sub-groups for the constitution of relationships established between the new, patrilineal and exogamic groups (iyaõkwa), that encourage ritual and family relationships. The analysis points towards the centrality of conviviality and commensality as measures of the management and control of differences. / Este estudo trata do regime de alteridade dos Enawene-Nawe, falantes de uma língua da família Arawak-Maipure e residentes no Vale do Rio Juruena (Estado de Mato Grosso, Sudoeste amazônico). Partindo da análise das narrativas e enunciados enawene-nawe, a pesquisa se debruça sobre os postulados que abordam a passagem de um modelo fundamentado em subgrupos endogâmicos e territorialmente dispersos, para a constituição de relações estabelecidas entre nove iyaõkwa, grupos patrilineares e exogâmicos, que arregimentam as relações rituais e de parentesco na atualidade.
