January 2012 (has links)
This dissertation intends to analyze the symbols in the novel Heroes and Villains, published in 1969 by the British author Angela Carter. The novel has as a fundamental characteristic the use of symbols represented by images, possibly built as a criticism directed to the patriarchal society, bearing in mind the main character's escape from her confinement. This work has the intention to shed a light on how the symbols are built to represent aspects such as space and the female characters. In the first chapter of this study, we touch briefly on the life and works of the author, as well as the critical pieces produced on the novel. In the second chapter we cover the most relevant theories concerning dystopian science fiction, post modernism and feminism. Still in the second chapter, we analyze the characters in the context of a post-apocalyptic society and their many voices in their intertextuality. The third chapter is dedicated to the analysis, using the theories on symbology, of the symbols present in the novel. Lastly, our intention is also to divulge the criticism of the patriarchal model of a society, as intended by the writer / Mestre

January 2012 (has links)
The objective of this study is to discuss the notion of cinematographic adaptation as being independent of its source text, beginning with considerations concerning dialogism and intertextuality, based mainly on theoreticians like Robert Stam (2000; 2004; 2008), Linda Hutcheon (2006), Christine Geraghty (2008) and Thomas Leitch (2008a; 2008b). After an overview of the theories of the area, the dissertation analyses two films based on two novels written by the English writer Ian McEwan, Enduring Love (2004) and Atonement (2007), in order to show how the criterion of fidelity is not a determining factor in the quality and/or success of the cinematographic adaptation / Mestre

A caracterização do feminino em "The Silmarillion", de J. R. R. Tolkien /

Silva, Mariana Souza e. January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: This dissertation intends to analyse the female characterization in the novel The Silmarillion, written by J. R. R. Tolkien. This novel has a fantastic tone, and it is part of a mythology created by its author; the characters have features that go from human to divine, and most of them are formed by men that act as heroes. The present study focuses on the female characters of the novel, and through the analysis of their physical and psychological descriptions, actions, features, in short, their constructions, it intends to determine the author's way of representation; so, it will be possible to reach a reflection about the importance of these characters in the Tolkienian mythology, to which The Silmarillion figures as the initial point. It is also necessary to unmask the influence of political, social and historical factors on the creation and development of these characters. The novel gives an account on the facts that figure as a mythical background to the world where it is placed, Middle-earth. The events that were the origin to everything, beings and places, feelings, Evil and its eternal fight against Good for power, are told. We intend to achieve this goal with the support of many theories, especially the feminist trend of literary criticism that deals with the role of woman as a reader of texts written by men, as it is the case. We also wish to contribute to the growing interest on the works of the English author, who was left at the edge of the canon by the specialized critics, so that it is possible to recognize the importance of his work at his time, and also the importance of his female characters. / Mestre

Confinamento e vastidão : a representação feminina e a subversão em The magic toyshop /

Rodrigues, Talita Annunciato. January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation intends to conduct an analysis of the female representation in Angela Carter's novel The Magic Toyshop (1967), observing its relation with the elements present in the book. Considering the importance of this representation in the writer's works, this dissertation aims to elucidate how the construction of female characters and the setting (since it will also contribute to the representation of these characters) of the referred narrative is done. The information obtained have the intention of clarifying certain aspects, such as the the dialogue between the author's style, frequently associated with fantasy literature and post-modernism, and the ideology present in the novel: the critique of the patriarchal model of society, which often imposed stereotypes and social roles for women. Thus, at the same time that her work approaches the fantastic features, Angela Carter doesn't dissociate her writing of the social context, creating an unique style of writing. One notices that, like her characters, the author seeks, through subversion, her own space in Literature / Mestre

Antunes, Thiago. January 2009 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkien's book, has as its central component of the narrative tension between tradition and modernity at the beginning of the twentieth century. The book ends with the disappearance in Middle-Earth of all the beings of fantasy (for destruction or abandonment) a characteristic that can be attributed to the increase in the power of instrumental rationality and the social organization of modernity linked to it. At the same time, during the development of the narrative are traditional characteristics with a devastating force: the preeminence of sacredness, for example, imposes a hierarchy among all beings in the world. Our intent, therefore, is through an interpretation of the immanent narrative, recover their history and their diagnosis in time. To deal with the narrative structure realized that The Lord of the Rings does not have a "pure" epic, incorporating elements of traditional epic (epic and fairy tale) and modern epic (novel) and it is a hybrid form, expressed an allegory. Based on format of this allegory, the narrative uses the figural thinking of priests of Middle Ages, emphasizing his attempt to resume the tradition, the figural thinking will be incorporated as a technique of writing this narrative, however, is primarily its incorporation as a historiographical - already that the narrative is presented as a historiography. The traditional elements (religious, mainly), therefore, be associated with the Well, now the modern elements are associated with the Evil representation. However, this concern is not static, we can say that the modernization (technical) is always associated with evil, but some characteristics related to modernity will not be this interpretation. Only with the modern development (individual and reflective) of subject the evil (modernization) be held. The tradition and the two...

Yatsu, Renata Kuhn. January 2010 (has links)
No terceiro capítulo, o interesse é demonstrar que nesta extensa narrativa de Angela Carter, as representações estão presentes e produzem o clima de espetáculo, fazendo do romance um verdadeiro circo / Abstract: The present work presents an analysis of the novel Nights at the circus (1984), by the English writer Angela Carter, above all approaching the main character, Fevvers. In the first chapter we briefly deal with the writer's life and work, and also with the critical works produced about the novel. Still in this chapter, we try to analyze some of the terminology related to Carter's production, such as magic realism, post-modernism and feminism, taking as reference studies already done. In the second chapter, we use theories about symbology. The interest is to analyze some of the symbols which appear in the novel and are important during the reading because they let implicit some of the meanings that the author wants to transmit. In the third chapter the interest is to demonstrate that in this long Carterian narrative the representations are present and produce the spectacle mood, turning the novel into a real circus / Mestre
