Falling for lions

Paschoal, Lívia Maria Pinto January 2012 (has links)
E não apenas sob a luz do luar
/ Abstract : Gothic Literature is responsible for producing creatures that have haunted people's dreams and have fostered the imagination of many for more than a century. However, none of such creatures have ever been in the spotlight as the contemporary vampire. In the first decade of the twenty-first century, Edward Cullen, the teenager vampire from American author Stephenie Meyer's literary phenomenon Twilight (2005), has captured the hearts of a generation of young readers from all over the planet. The Twilight character is responsible for making vampires, and therefore Gothic fiction receive renewed attention from the readership, allowing a proliferation of vampire-related novels, especially those that are aimed at young adults. Edward also epitomizes a new depiction of the vampire character that bears little resemblance to Dracula, from Bram Stoker's eponymous novel, published in 1897. The analysis of the physical aspects and personality traits that place Dracula and Edward on different sides of the same coin are the core of the present investigation, which is also committed to explore the changes already signalized in the Ricean vampires Louis and Lestat, from the 1976 best-seller Interview with the Vampire. In addition, this research claims that Edward is a hero despite his villainous nature. In such change of paradigm lies, arguably, the explanation for the popularity of Edward Cullen and the contemporary vampire character, signalizing that the bloodsuckers are here to stay. And not just under moonlight

Orlandi, Aline Cristina Sola. January 2016 (has links)
Abstract: This master's thesis aims to elucidate through feminist theories and the Gothic genre some writing techniques used by Angela Carter in the rewriting of the fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood" as a form of subversion of patriarchal discourses and deconstruction of an entire western imaginary subjugation and victimization of woman. Carter revisits the most popular fairy tales in the collection The Bloody Chamber and other stories, subverting structural patterns of these stories and also woman's position as recurring passive victim in some fairy tales and gothic literature. Through the tales "The Werewolf" and "The Company of Wolves", present in said collection, is intended to explore how Carter makes use of Gothic elements to build an atmosphere of terror, representing the dangers that the heroine will have to face to reach the end of the path and win a total pleasure (Jouissance), through its economic, social, sexual and imaginary independence. And how Carter proposes an ally pornography to woman, that empowers and helps her discover her identity, to thus repossess her place of equality with man in society. In addition, we intend to clarify, also, as the author subverts the Gender Gothic and Fairy tale, and the very Pornography and anti-pornography feminist movement speeches. / Mestre

Subversive blood ties

Mousinho, George Alexandre Ayres de Menezes January 2013 (has links)
/ Abstract : The present dissertation consists of an investigation of the construction of the Gothic theme of decadence in Bram Stoker's Dracula and two film adaptations of the novel - Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's Nosferatu and Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula - having as the centre of analysis how three characters - Dracula, Jonathan Harker and Mina Harker - relate to that theme. The Gothic decadence is a literary motif from the fin-de-siècle context of the Victorian Era inspired by the social crisis that took place in England in the late nineteenth century (Punter and Byron 39-40). Authors like Bram Stoker wrote stories that reflected moral and social fears of the Victorian society, depicting images of monsters that represented the crossing of moral and sexual boundaries established by the Victorian traditions (Botting 88). Bearing that discussion in mind, this study aims at connecting the portrayal of such a theme from novel to the two adaptations, also making use of a filmic analysis to identify techniques that highlight the depiction of the theme related to the three characters, ultimately linking such a thematic depiction to crises and social commotions that were taking place in both films' social contexts.

A síncrese infantil e o texto de horror

Vieira, Pedro Silas Romão January 2016 (has links)
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Literatura, Florianópolis, 2016. / Made available in DSpace on 2016-09-20T04:56:41Z (GMT).
/ Abstract : The tale The Call of Cthulhu, by Howard Phillips Lovecraft, is an outstanding work because of certain moments where the storyteller?s speech acquires an intricate touch. Beginning from this observation, it was possible to trace the hypothesis that relates this characteristic with the incipient speech of children. The theses of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, where he reflects about the genesis of childish speeches, allows to establish a parallel between the type of discourse used by the storyteller - of that tale - and the childish speech marked by synchresis: term established by Henri Wallon to describe the initial character of the perception and childish thoughts. Merleau-Ponty, appropriates himself with this term and give it an ontological status, clarifying the primordial character of perception. Here things are known on a non-synthetic and non-analytical way and in an ambiguous character, inconclusive and temporary; reflecting itself in the incipient forms of expression. From Merleau-Ponty?s comparison between synchresis and operative intentionality concept ? Fungierende Intentionalität ? in accordance with Edmund Husserl, it is possible to understand the first one as an aspect of authentic expression of gestures. These findings help to draft a way of intelligibility involving literary assumptions instituted by H. P. Lovecraft in The Supernatural Horror in Literature, relating what he describes as an atmosphere with the propositions of Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht about the idea of Stimmung. In the last one it?s possible to understand the possibility of transposing the significant?s domain to the things that are experienced in the perception of authentic expression of gestures. These prior conjectures allow the understanding of the obscure passages in the tale story The Call of Cthulhu as syncretic speeches justified by the croaker perception of it?s storyteller.

Alegrette, Alessandro Yuri. January 2016 (has links)
Abstract: The corpus of this research is Wuthering Heights, the only novel written by the English writer Emily Brontë that since its first publication in 1847 has generated contradictory reactions that oscillate between fascination and repulsion among readers. We analyse some peculiar aspects of this work, emphasizing among them, its mode of narration that combines frightening aspects of Gothic novel with elements of realistic aesthetics of the nineteenth century. They are also objects of this study, which we call "Gothic spatiality" that stands out in the description of its main scenario - Wuthering Heights, the old and sinister house that provides the title of the novel -, and the themes and motifs of the Gothic genre that were reviewed by Emily Brontë, such as the double, which is widely exploited in texts with Gothic inspiration, such as Manfred, dramatic poem of Byron. Finally we analyse the couple of protagonists in the novel, Catherine and Heathcliff, seeking to appoint an intertextual dialogue between Brontë's book with works of Gothic genre or inserted in the English literary tradition, such as Paradise Lost, by John Milton. / Doutor

Pesadillas urbanas

Bernui Alvarado, Roberto Andrés 17 August 2023 (has links)

A walk with Catherine and Jane : the exposure of gothic conventions in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights and Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre

Moura, Caroline Navarrina de January 2017 (has links)
This thesis consists of a reading of Emily Brontë‘s Wuthering Heights (1847) and Charlotte Brontë‘s, Jane Eyre (1847), focusing on the body of Gothic conventions they hold, and the ways in which such conventions interfere with the movements of the two female protagonists, Catherine and Jane, each struggling to fit into their space, while trying to accomplish their desires. Although the two works are structurally different in several ways, they share an intense Gothic atmosphere and its consequent psychological density, which influences the mental frame of the two protagonists. In order to explore the relations among the structural, social and psychological aspects involved, a reading of the novels has been conducted, focusing on the presence of Gothic elements that stand for the challenges Catherine and Jane are bound to face. Literary critic Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick‘s work The Coherence of Gothic Conventions (1986) is used to identify and contextualise the capacity of Gothic imagery to reveal the weight of social conventions upon the natural process of growth of the two protagonists. Inasmuch as the pressure becomes intensified by the rules of gender settlements, the concept of Female Gothic is explored, as presented by Professor Carol Margaret Davison. Particular attention is paid to the imagery related to space – psychological space for the protagonists to grow emotionally, and physical space, as determinant of where and how they must move. Here the theoretical support is offered by Gaston Bachelard‘s poetics of the primitive elements, unveiling the body of images presented in the two novels. The conclusion indicates the solutions found by Catherine Earnshaw and by Jane Eyre to find their way and overcome the obstacles they meet; with comments on how revealing Gothic imagery is of the social conventions it represents.
