Moral Reasoning Of Pre-service Science Teacherstoward Local And Non-local Environmental Problems

Tuncay, Busra 01 February 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Based on the importance of environmental ethics in both causing and solving many of the environmental problems, the present study aimed to (1) Examine moral reasoning patterns (i.e. ecocentric, anthropocentric, non-environmental) of pre-service science teachers toward local and non-local environmental problems, (2) Investigate the effects of gender and grade level on moral reasoning patterns, and (3) Explain the factors that may have led to the observed differences in participants&rsquo / moral reasoning patterns. Throughout 2008-2009 Fall and Spring semesters, environmental cases regarding local and non-local environmental problems were distributed to a convenience sample of 120 pre-service science teachers who were enrolled in Middle East Technical University and moral decision-making interviews (MDMIs) were carried out with a sub-sample of 16 pre-service science teachers. In accordance with the purpose of the study, descriptive statistics, paired-samples t-tests, and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) tests as well as qualitative analysis of the interviews were utilized. Analyses demonstrated that participants of the study mostly exhibited ecocentric moral reasoning for both local and non-local environmental problems, and their ecocentric and anthropocentric concerns showed statistically significant difference with regard to problems&rsquo / locality. Moreover, while gender did not have a statistically significant effect on participants&rsquo / moral reasoning patterns, grade level did have a statistically significant effect. Finally, analysis of the interviews revealed sixteen factors effective in participants&rsquo / environmental concerns and their moral reasoning regarding environmental issues.

The grieving forest; the social-environmental degradation in Amazonian Rainforest

Fernandez, Maria, Caballero, Sebastian José January 2008 (has links)

The Amazonia is the biggest rainforest in the world, home also to probably the largest amount of different bio diversity species in our planet. Notwithstanding these incredible attributes, it is also one of the most threatened regions earth that extends to the whole planet. This thesis analyzes just a small segment of the interrelation of different human actors reacting to environmental problems. Theoretical frame works of different nature are used in this thesis in an effort to combine with synergy the strengths and potential benefits of political ecology, the stakeholder model, local institutionalisms, and the political and economical role of persons just to mention the most significant. This combination of these different scientific and empirical disciplines offers us a chance to apply the full potential for the analysis of the environmental problems related to human actions in the regional settings with the capability of gaining in depth knowledge that can be applied later in the design and implementation of potential alternatives seeking s the welfare of all human and biological stakeholders as our knowledge allows us currently. The thesis is structured on three study cases that cover a vast area of the Amazonia: the first case is located in Bolivia where we analyze the situation of Santa Maria de Maravilla, regarding the problems of land property and land use; the second case is located in Brazil in the Santarém region, where an important intensive production of soybean is affecting the environment as well as confronting the local communities; the third case is located in Ecuador analyzing the situation of the Block 15 region; an area deeply affected by the petroleum companies and the generic concepts of investment in extractive industries as a tool for regional and national development.

Local actors are of the highest importance despite the different nature of the case studies, in order find commonalities which might allow us to make hypothetical counteracting models to decrease the devastating of environmental degradation in the Amazonia; some of the external actors (like the NGOs) can play an influential role in order to improve the collaboration and trust with local members.

Integrated Solid Waste Management : A Possible Solution to Environmental and Sanitation Problems in the Ancient City of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria

Komolafe, Sunday January 2012 (has links)
The quantity of solid waste generated in Nigeria has increased at an alarming rate over the decades with lack of efficient and sustainable waste management in most cities of the country. This can be attributed to incessant increase in population, expansion of urban areas, industrialization and consumption rates. This study focuses on the ancient city of Ibadan and used Ibadan North Local Government as the case study. There are many environmental and sanitation problems in Ibadan due to improper waste management by the stakeholders involved. The result and analysis of the situation reveals that there are indications that most residents are ignorant of waste handling methods irrespective of their educational and economic status coupled with poor management of waste and lack of good environmental policy. The study analyzes options for adopting Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) which comprises of waste hierarchy. Activities of Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority (OSSWMA), Ibadan North Local Government (IBNLG) and Private Refuse Contractors (PRCs) in terms of technical know-how, financial capacity and waste equipment are not adequate to meet the tasks. In order to overcome these challenges, this research work discusses if and how Integrated Solid Waste Management can be implemented.

"Educação na escola: conhecimento dos alunos à respeito de mosquitos (diptera:culicidae) e problemas ambientais" / Education at school: students' knowledge regarding mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) and environmental problems

Rosa, Julio Cesar 27 April 2004 (has links)
Rosa, JC. / Rosa, JC. São Paulo (BR); 2004. [MD Thesis – Faculdade de Saúde Pública da Universidade de São Paulo]. Objective. To identify students' knowledge of mosquitoes and their association to environmental problems. Method. The universe of investigation comprised 58 students from grades 5-8, from Escola Estadual Anne Frank, located in the district of Jardim São Francisco, in the Municipality of São Paulo. Research was carried out by means of semi-structured interviews, using magnetic tape recordings and transcription of tapes. The method employed used a set of instruments, the methodological entities, which enable discrimination of the main themes from the discourse presented by the students, in what refers to the object of the present study. The instruments in question are the central idea and the collective subject discourse. Results: Analysis of data returned the following prevailing ideas: residing in the district is good; the "Rio Negrinho," river is polluted; the reproduction of mosquitoes occurs in places containing water; the mosquitoes cause allergy; garbage is the main environmental problem, and; build-up of water and garbage should be avoided in order to eliminate the mosquitoes. Conclusions. The vector control programs traditionally adopted by the government have not been producing satisfying results; new methods should be found so as to understand how this community behaves toward the mosquitoes, by developing educational campaigns based on organization and the community's knowledge. Recommendations. Inform the students about epidemically significant Culicidae that inhabit the area, seeking to develop more effective educational campaigns in the control of such insects; preferably make use of a language that the community understands, without damaging the technical content, thus ensuring a better understanding of the themes approached, probably resulting in more appropriate actions in the control of vectors.

Avaliação dos problemas ambientais relacionados aos aspectos geológico-geotécnicos e dutos enterrados, poliduto Osbra: trecho Porto Ferreira - Ribeirão Preto / Evaluation of environmental problems related to the geological-geotechnical aspects and buried pipeline, pipeline OSBRA: link Porto Ferreira and Ribeirão Preto

Ferreira, Joseli 27 July 1999 (has links)
Leakage from pipeline constitute a potential source of groundwater and surface water contamination as well as to geological and biological environment components. In this research the environmental problems due to leaking of petroleum products transported by OSBRA pipeline, which runs between Porto Ferreira and Ribeirão Preto (SP), are analyzed. It is located in an area of intense agricultural management, crossing large and recharge area of Botucatu Formation and fractured basaltic rocks from Serra Geral Formation. All these areas are, therefore, subject to the contamination in case of accidents involving the pipeline. The aim of this research is to analyze the agents responsible by the accidents and to determine the different types of contamination according to the main characteristic of the environment and spill material.

Sustainability is in the eye of the follower : Involving followers in cooperation for strategic sustainable development

Starovoytova, Anna, Zhirnova, Maria January 2019 (has links)
As the signs of the impending ecological crisis become more apparent, the issue of sustainability comes to the forefront in many studies. However, there appears to be a substantial lack of focus on the individual level which can be considered a major shortcoming due to the fact that sustainability can only be obtained through joint efforts of each and every person. A significant part of sustainability work lies on the shoulders of companies and organisations as they are not only legally obliged to reduce the environmental footprint of their activities but also bear a huge responsibility in the face of the whole society. As employees often carry the main burden when it comes to implementing new initiatives, we decided to gain a better understanding of their perspective. In the presented research we explore the sensemaking of employees in relation to sustainability in order to determine their role as followers in company’s or organisation’s sustainability work. Our ambition for the research was to contribute to closing the gap in existing studies by suggesting a theoretical model which would describe various roles which employees enact when faced with sustainability issues. We carried out a qualitative study based on an inductive approach and case study research method. For the purpose of the study we conducted interviews and analysed data looking for recurrent themes, patterns and more importantly variations in the ways employees make sense of sustainability. As a result, we presented four roles which employees enact in the context of sustainability, namely movers and shakers, happy campers, truth-seekers and distant observers, and provided the description of main distinctive characteristics inherent in these roles.

Vulnerability to brown environmental problems within informal settlements in Seshego, Limpopo Province

Mahlakoana, Nicholene Ntlogeleng January 2010 (has links)
Thesis (M.Dev.) --University of Limpopo, 2010 / Living in informal settlements is associated, theoretically, with the exposure and vulnerability to Brown Environmental Problems. Literature further stresses the association of informal settlements and poor living conditions by demonstrating that the establishment of informal settlements around the cities is intricately associated with poor living conditions that enforce circumstances of perpetual risk and high levels of vulnerability to Brown Environmental Problems. Overcrowding, poor service provision and heavy reliance on dirty fuels characterizes informal settlements and therefore link these settlements and environmental risks and hazards. The link between informal settlements and environmental risks and hazards is in return making people who live in these settlements vulnerable to, among other things, the Brown Environmental Problems, such as indoor pollution, dirty water, poor sanitation and poor waste management. It therefore became increasingly necessary to investigate the vulnerability to Brown Environmental Problems associated within these settlements. The investigation was done in Seshego, Zone 6, mostly known as Shushumela (Rainbow-Park). The study adopted a combination of the qualitative and quantitative approaches. The qualitative approach was used to describe the characteristics of the informal settlement, the types and origins of the Brown Environmental Problems, the living conditions within the settlement, and to detail the individual accounts of the informal settlements population’s opinions and experiences on their vulnerability. Additionally, quantitative approach was used to measure the demographic profile of the households within the settlements, to determine the population density in the settlements, the frequency of the households’ exposure to a variety of Brown Environmental Problems and the amount of time of exposure to dirty fuels, dirty water, and poor sanitation. The prevalence rate of the different types of the Brown Environmental Problems was also quantitatively constructed. The study compiled its conceptual framework by digesting and synthesising contributions from the system of ideas that involves the general assumption about the relationship between informal settlements living conditions and vulnerability of the populations therein to Brown Environmental Problems. Zone 6 is an informal settlement in Seshego, this settlement is also known as Rainbow Park-Shushumela. Like other informal settlements, Shushumela comprises of people who need a place to stay but unable to find one due to various reasons one of them being affordability issue. Shushumela informal settlement does not have basic services. Its residents stay in shacks and use their own ways to survive the situation of living without electricity, adequate sanitation and waste removal services. The residents are exposed to various Brown Environmental Problems such as indoor air pollution due the use of paraffin wood and coal, waterborne diseases and sanitation-borne diseases due to the limited access of water and use of pit latrines. The residents’ overall living conditions expose them to Brown Environmental Problems.
