Subverting Socialist Realism: Vasily Grossman's Marginal Heroes

Whittle, Maria Karen 13 May 2012 (has links)
Soviet writer Vasilii Grossman has been renowned in the West as a dissident author of Life and Fate, which multiple sources, including The New York Times have called "arguably the greatest Russian novel of the 20th century." Grossman, however, was not a dissident, but an official state writer attempting to publish for a Soviet audience. Grossman's work was criticized by Soviets as being "too Jewish", while Jewish scholars have called it "not Jewish enough." And, despite his modern critical acclaim, little scholarship on Grossman exists. In my thesis, I explore these paradoxes. I argue that Grossman attempts to reinterpret traditional state ideas of Sovietness into a more inclusive, democratic version by creating heroes from traditionally marginalized groups. To do this, he reinterprets and inverts traditional tropes of the Socialist Realist genre. Genric limitations on his worldview, however, prevent this vision from being completely realized in the course of his work. I trace Grossman's work from his early short fiction to his Khruschev era novels and show how this trope develops during his career as a Soviet writer and citizen.

The corpus shows up by a cryptic way, cultivating a hybrid literature, composed of collages and clippings extracted from various types of media. The central problems of this dissertation were how the epic is retaken in the novels analyzed and if there is a possibility of an allegorical interpretation of these novels. The intention is to understand the procedures used by the author, with particular attention to the montage, articulating it with the characteristics of the epic, as conceived by Georg Lukacs. Next, the corpus is illuminated by the concept of allegory, in its relation to an idea of melancholy. The theoretical framework is founded in Georg Lukács, Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno, Serguiéi Eisenstein and Giorgio Agamben. As a result, we came to the conclusion that Valêncio Xavier recoves the epic genre principally by means of montage and citation, giving a new dimension to the novel genre and inscribing it in contemporary. In addition, the allegorical reading of the work in question can only to happen by means of an understanding of melancholy, pathos that pass the analyzed novels / Esta dissertação analisa as relações entre o gênero romance épico e a alegoria na obra Rremembranças da menina de rua morta nua e outros livros, de Valêncio Xavier (2006).

No. of bitstreams: 1 Marcela Costa Lima Kuhn.pdf: 427250 bytes, checksum: de426ae47fa069d54c50570f93512ca5 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-03-24 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This Master's thesis intends to understand Alfred Döblin's novel Berlin Alexanderplatz through Walter Benjamin's critic analysis. In order to do so, it will scrutinize the concepts of novel, experience, montage, choc and epic thought by both authors, and also by their main influences, namely, Lukács and Brecht. The aspects of the montage on the actual novel will be deeply considered, mainly because Benjamin points out in an essay about Döblin's novel, named Krisis des Romans that the montage is one of the most relevant aspects the novel delivers to German literature on the Weimar republic period. It will also be presented the changes the Grosstadt shapes into the 20th century subjects and therefore into the novels they write and read, in particular, Berlin Alexanderplatz. And finally, an investigation regarding the political relations between both authors / Esta dissertação de mestrado pretende compreender o romance de Alfred Döblin, Berlin Alexanderplatz, através da análise crítica de Walter Benjamin.
