Comparison of a large and small grapple skidder in a pine plantation thinning application

The objective of this research was to compare the performance of a small (92 horsepower) grapple skidder with that of a large (185 horsepower) grapple skidder in corridor thinning applications in southern pine plantations. Comparisons included (1) time and production, (2) residual stand damage, (3) soil compaction, (4) cost, and (5) the impact of tree size on productivity. The large grapple skidder was found to be (1) more productive, (2) associated with slightly more residual stand damage, (3) associated with less soil compaction, (4) less expensive on a cost per ton of production basis, and (5) more sensitive to variation in tree size than was the small grapple skidder. The results of this research suggests that large grapple skidders are capable of excellent performance in corridor thinning of southern pine plantations. / Master of Science

Five changes were suggested to improve the kidney dialysis machine, including a conductivity control feedback system, a positive pressure deaeration system, a balancing system for dialysate flow control, a diaphragm-type blood pump, and an ultrafiltration control system using blood pressure measurement. A kidney dialysis machine was constructed to test the changes for possible use in future dialysis machine designs. Tests were made on each of the five system improvements. All five ideas had some merit for a commercial dialysis machine. A description of the investigation and the various factors used in the development and testing of the five systems is included. / Master of Science

(Somatology) / The somatology industry has seen a rapid advancement in the use of technology to address physical concerns of clients in terms of addressing the visible signs of skin ageing, issues around centimetre reduction, cellulite and other aspects. In South Africa, the Somatology curricula vary between public and private higher education institutions. Even more diversity has been noted within the private somatology higher education providers. The electrical equipment curriculum that is taught in specifically nationally and/or internationally accredited private institutions has not been updated in years and is perceived as outdated. These students are still being taught and examined on electrical equipment that was popular during the 1980’s and that have since been replaced with updated and modern machines. The purpose of this study was to establish the perceived proficiency of newly-qualified nationally and/or internationally accredited graduates in using electrical equipment currently used in the modern health and skincare industry. This study made use of a mixed method design, incorporating three different data-collection techniques. These techniques included unstructured and semi-structured personal telephone interviews and structured questionnaires. Collecting data from three perspectives allowed for triangulation, ensuring validity and reliability. The results of this study concluded that the graduates, from selected specified nationally and/or internationally accredited private higher education institutions, did not deem themselves to be proficient in the use of modern electrical equipment. This sentiment was supported by their employers in the health and skincare industry, and verified by the lecturers who facilitated their learning during their two-year qualification.
