Processing and characterization of RF sputtered alumina thin films.Gignac, Lynne Marie. January 1988 (has links)
Thin films of alumina were deposited on ferrite (NiₓZn₍₁₋ₓ₎Fe₂O₄), glass, single crystal silicon and graphite substrates by RF sputtering. Though standard, amorphous Al₂O₃ films are readily soluble in hot phosphoric acid, these sputtered films exhibited only reluctant etchability by the acid. Experiments were initially performed to understand the parameters in the sputtering process which were influential in the formation of unetchable films. The results showed that a high concentration of water vapor or oxygen molecules in the sputtering chamber during deposition was the most significant variable controlling the growth of unetchable films. The films were categorized according to their degree of solubility in H₃PO₄ and were examined using various microanalytical characterization techniques. TEM analysis directly showed the existence of crystalline γ-Al₂O₃ in the film at the film-substrate interface. The γ-Al₂O₃ phase grew with a preferred orientation coincident with the substrate orientation--as in heteroepitaxial growth. The occurrence of this film phase was related to the oxygen partial pressure, the substrate material, and the substrate temperature and was believed to be the cause of the film's incomplete etching behavior.

Raižau nebaigtus objektus. Pasirinkau Kaliningrade stovinį "Dom Sovietov", jam draugėn atsirado buvusiame Leningrade esantys "Dom Sovietov" (Sovietų namai). Juos jungia ne tik toks pat pavadinimas ,bet ir tai ,kad jie niekada nebuvo iki galo pabaigti - prie pirmojo pastato Kaliningrade darbai sustojo baigus statyti 90 proc. objekto, antrasis ,nors ir baigtas konstrukcine - architektūrine prasme ,niekada nebuvo naudotas pagal paskirtį, kuriai buvo statomas... Taip išsirikiavo vienu ar kitu būdu neužbaigti 7 pastatai - objektai. Vienu atveju tai tik projektas popieriaus lape (administracinis pastatas, planuotas statyti dabartinėje Lukiškių aikštėje) , kitu - vienintelis išlikęs objektas - nuoroda į nepastatytus grandiozinius "Sovietų rūmus". Bandau būti tuo "inžinieriumi", kuris mėgina juos užbaigti raižydamas. Suvienodinu ir nefragmentuoju, sieju juos į visumą ,nesvarbu iš kokio laikmečio šie objektai yra. Aiškinuosi, kokia tų objektų padėtis dabar, žlugus sistemai, ar galima juos atsieti nuo aplinkos ir iš naujo permąstyti ? Prie kiekvieno pastato palieku trumpą jo "biografiją". My art is about journeys, mapping, and layering. Two archetypal images in my work are the camel and the desert. Much of this imagery was inspired by my personal journey over the Sahara and into Western Africa. On another level, this journey connects to my metaphorical journey through life. As a printmaker, my art is very process oriented. Printmaking itself can be thought of as a kind of journey. My trip or the process is more important than the destination or the final result. Like the desert, my images are constantly shifting and transforming through the process of working. Printmaking with its alchemical overtones, layering, and unique surface qualities becomes a natural extension of my imagery.

STM Studies of Oxygen Etching of Silicon SurfacesWillis, Mary L. 01 January 2005 (has links)
This study uses atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the oxygen etching behavior of the following silicon surface orientations: (001), (111), (113), (5 5 12) and (112). Most etching was performed at sample temperatures between 650 °C and 800 °C, at pressures of 3.3×10-7 and 1.5×10-7 Torr, and at an exposure of 200 L. Surface orientation strongly influences the morphology resulting from extended etching. The surface orientations that are stable against etching and remain flat include Si(001), Si(111), and Si(113). Such surfaces also include island structures, which result from etching around oxide-induced pinning sites. The density of these islands increases at lower temperatures and higher pressures. The surface orientations that are unstable against oxygen etching and facet to other orientations include Si(5 5 12) and Si(112). These surfaces form sawtooth facets that are primarily composed of more stable (111) and (113) planes. By controlling the temperature and exposure during oxygen etching, it is therefore possible to form a variety of surface morphologies.

This thesis focuses on space, the in-between-ness that exists amidst mental and physical experience. Pith explains personal attachments and rooting systems. The thesis continues with Blessing, narrating love then loss, and finishes with a recipe for making a tomato sandwich. Blessing is followed by Materialize, a collective view of cyclical learning and meandering paths. Finally, the paper concludes with a quirky Women and Swarovski encrusted skulls, which matter-of-factly lists artists (all of whom happen to be women) whose works I find particularly compelling; and also notes on general trends in art I find interesting in a much less obvious manner. The artwork in Lucidity attempts to manifest an ephemeral, mental space with clarity, light, and shades of white. Both the artwork and the written component have been heavily influenced by my own affirmations of elation, loss, and contentment.
