O původu slov (etymologie názvosloví sladkovodních druhů ryb v ČR a anglicky mluvících zemích Evropy) / On the origin of words (Freshwater Fish Labelling Etymology in the Czech Republic and European English-speaking countries)

Novák, Lukáš January 2011 (has links)
The thesis doesn't have the tendency or ambition to reach the particular conclusion or final solution (which would be at least as debatable as the construction that it is based on). But it should bring different approach and focus on selected animal genus (our distant ancestors), accepting them as a contemporary cultural, economical and culinary interest. Insight trough the prism of tendency, specifics and unwritten rules of linguistics, under the thumb of cultural representativneness and its identification. The contact of two distinc worlds, antithesises. The silent and peaceful world of fishes, that has retained the objectified prism of lucent wall under the water level, which singularises it from antropocentric world of "those", who think to stand on the top of imaginary pyramid. The work is divided in three parts: Introductory principles, etymological research and addendum, which interprets fish from the art, astronomy, folklore, and booklore point of view.

The source of the Gothic month name jiuleis and its cognates

Landau, David 20 August 2014 (has links)
In the end of the nineteenth century, the difficulties in resolving the puzzle of the source of the Gothic month name jiuleis and its cognates led Tille to suggest searching for a solution outside the sphere of the Germanic languages. In this article I argue that the ultimate source of the Gothic word and its cognates is the Biblical term jubilee. I also argue that the word is a nomen sacrum (a sacred name) and, as such, an abbreviation.

Etymologická analýza označení barev a úsloví barvy obsahujících / Etymological analysis of colour names and related idioms

Hořejší, Anna January 2014 (has links)
TITLE: The etymological analysis of colour names and related idioms AUTHOR: Anna Hořejší DEPARTMENT: Department of the French language and literature SUPERVISOR: Mgr. Jiří Jančík ABSTRACT: This diploma thesis concerns the etymological analyses of colour names in the French language and related idioms. In the theoretical part we present the basic linguistic terminology necessary for the accomplishment of the etymological analyses; the practical part concerns the analyses itself. The objective of the thesis is to deeply analyze the six basic colours both from the etymological and symbolic point of view. Furthermore, the thesis concerns the etymological analyses of colours the names of which are to some extend specific and remarkable. We talk about colours like: fox tail, bonbon, the Berlin blue, tea, khaki, pearl or snow, divided into groups according to the word they contain (colours containing a name of an animal, food, liquid, material, the place of origin, etc.). These colours are examined not only etymologically; we are also interested in the reason for which they are called so. In the last part of the thesis we scrutinize also idioms containing a name of a colour; we talk about idioms like white night, yellow danger, to be bad like a red donkey, cordon bleu or green tongue. In this case, our goal is to...

The fourth dimension - a personal note on Landau's "December Paper"

Thiele, Wolfgang 20 August 2014 (has links) (PDF)
My "note" is closely related to David Landau's paper on the names of the months linguistically corresponding to "December" (this volume). It considers the onomastic status of time phrases by investigating the concepts of time and space in their interrelation. The contribution supplies reasoning that proves the existence of time as a fourth spatial dimension. Therefore the general statement that reality exists in space and time must be qualified. If time is a fourth spatial dimension, then the month‘s name “December” can be compared with a place name like "Leipzig". I suggest that there is no dichotomy between describing "Leipzig" as an onym, but "December" as an appellative only. "Leipzig" and "December" enjoy a familiar onomastic partnership.
