A case-based system for lesson plan constructionSaad, Aslina January 2011 (has links)
Planning for teaching imposes a significant burden on teachers, as teachers need to prepare different lesson plans for different classes according to various constraints. Statistical evidence shows that lesson planning in the Malaysian context is done in isolation and lesson plan sharing is limited. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether a case-based system can reduce the time teachers spend on constructing lesson plans. A case-based system was designed SmartLP. In this system, a case consists of a problem description and solution pair and an attributevalue representation for the case is used. SmartLP is a synthesis type of CBR system which attempts to create a new solution by combining parts of previous solutions in the adaptation. Five activities in the CBR cycle retrieve, reuse, revise, review and retain are created via three types of design: application, architectural and user interface. The inputs are the requirements and constraints of the curriculum and the student facilities available, and the output is the solution, i.e. appropriate elements of a lesson plan. The retrieval module consists of five types of search advanced search, hierarchical, Boolean, basic and browsing. Solving a problem in this system involves obtaining a problem description, measuring the similarity of the current problem to previous problems stored in a database, retrieving one or more similar cases and attempting to reuse the solution of the retrieved cases, possibly after adaptation. Case adaptation for multiple lesson plans helps teachers to customise the retrieved plan to suit their constraints. This is followed by case revision, which allows users to access and revise their constructed lesson plans in the system. Validation mechanisms, through case verification, ensure that the retained cases are of quality. A formative study was conducted to investigate the effects of SmartLP on performance. The study revealed that all the lesson plans constructed with SmartLP assistance took significantly less time than the control lesson plans constructed without SmartLP assistance, although they might have access to computers and other tools. No significant difference in writing quality, measured by a scoring system, was noticed for the control group, who constructed lesson plans on the same tasks without receiving any assistance. The limitations of SmartLP are indicated and the focus of further research is proposed. Keywords: Case-based system, CBR approach, knowledge acquisition, knowledge representation, case representation, evaluation, lesson planning.

The rapid and disordered population growth in urban centers has signaled for a increase in demand on sanitation systems of cities. This may change the water quality of water bodies effluent receivers. This reality can be seen in the southwest axle of the Federal District and its surrounding areas, characterized by high population concentration as well as high rates of population growth. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of population growth on water quality of water bodies receiving effluent and trainers of the Corumba IV reservoir, which will be used in future as a water supply. It was made the integration of QUAL2K water quality model with the support system decision Water Evaluation and Planning-WEAP creating various scenarios related to population growth and changes in the operating process of sewage treatment plants (WWTP) of that region. Initially, the spreadsheet QUAL2K was developed, and after calibration, it was integrated into the WEAP to make iterations to simulate future scenarios. The main advantage of this integration was to get better results for the simulations through QUAL2K.However, there is some loss of information by WEAP with the integration of water quality model. Four scenarios were simulated between 2010 and 2030. All scenarios indicated that concentration of OD decreases and BOD concentration increases in the Descoberto, after the confluence with the river Melchior, as it was to be expected. The results of the different scenarios suggested that to ensure the conservation of the water quality of river Descoberto and Lake Corumbá IV, in relation with the population density process in the region southwest of DF, it is important to adjust the levels of treatment of wastewater treatment in the region to higher levels, around 95% of BOD removal.

AvaliaÃÃo e planejamento para o desenvolvimento institucional de universidades / Evaluation and planing for institutional development of universityFrancisco AntÃnio de AraÃjo e Souza 16 December 2010 (has links)
OrganizaÃÃo para CooperaÃÃo e Desenvolvimento EconÃmico, consignados no relatÃrio Education at a Glance:
fator nesse fenÃmeno; nÃo haver apenas um Ãnico modelo para o desenvolvimento institucional da universidade;
Develop the concept of institutional development for the Brazilian contemporary university is a complex
problem: to be a new issue, the conceptual underpinnings are not consolidated, there are no studies and surveys
that indicate features, obstacles, and evidence of this phenomenon. This thesis, which started as a study in the
Graduate Program in Education of the Federal University of Cearà (UFC), aimed to address this issue as a
central criterion for proposing, through the categories of analysis Evaluation, Planning and Sinaes a model
of institutional development as a precondition to indicate, in addition to the quality dimensions of university
based in the National Evaluation System of Higher Education of Brazil (Sinaes), its social relevance. With this
intention, we sought the tasks laid down by the Brazilian universities, while regarding the main elements,
functions or structures, which were organized into twenty categories of analysis, allowing to characterize the
contemporary university in Brazil, based on their mission, while its ratio institutional. In this analysis it was
found that most often the Brazilian university is characterized by offering Teaching and Research, Knowing
and Knowledge, Humanistic Education & Professional with the purposes of: Development & Progress,
Society & Community, Social Inclusion and Citizenship. Based on this understanding of the subject field,
the multiple references and transdisciplinarity, characterized the process of institutional development of the
university and its obstacles, coming to the conceptions of society, subject and institution to propose a model
where the main obstacle to institutional development , identified as the disconnection between the macro
assessment and institutional planning, was overcome. To put the education in the world and in Brazil included
the analysis of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development - OECD, contained in the report
Education at a Glance: OECD lndicators Report 2007 on the model CIPP proposed by Stufflebeam, with
results presented in form of tables, charts and graphs. Thus, the proposed model is a first approach to examining
the institutional development of the university in a Brazilian contemporary socio-historical perspective,
organized by systemic analysis, and institutional critique, which found that culture is the main factor in this
phenomenon, there is no single model for institutional development of the university, which is a necessary task,
as a reason for action, capable of guiding the university, your body and its social political and pedagogical
project in directions: the economic system of society, the establishment of the organization; the individual-agent
to the subject-citizen. A mission to reorient their objectives and institutional projects in addition to teaching,
research and extension.

Addressing water availability and climate change issues in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru through technical analysis and community building strategiesRead, Laura K. 14 February 2011 (has links)
Accelerated tropical glacial melt on the order of 15-18 meters per year since the 1980's in Peru's Cordillera Blanca region is alarming rural communities and urban authorities, causing them to seek technical support for risk management and adaptation actions. Melting glaciers coupled with changing seasonal rainfall patterns has left many rural communities in the upper Rio Santa basin lacking sufficient fresh water supply to support livestock, irrigation and human consumption. In response to these concerns, a Water Evaluation And Planning (WEAP) model was created by the Stockholm Environmental Institute for simulating glacial melt and flow in the Santa River. Through input parameters of climate, glacial runoff, water use, crop acreage, soil type and groundwater interactions, WEAP has the flexibility to model scenarios for different operation schemes. These schemes allow users to determine the most effective ways to regulate their resources and explore adaptation actions (e.g. altering farming practices and building reservoirs) for future planning. This project improved the existing model by including observed water demand data for irrigation, and evaluating the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) dataset to serve as a potential source for filling gaps in the historic climate record. These improvements added robustness to the model and correlated well with historic stream flow at La Balsa (R² = 0.78 , Nash = 0.68). Two scenarios were explored where (1) a 50% reduction in potato crop was replaced with maize for each sub-basin, and (2) a 10% reduction in precipitation was applied over the upper basin. Results show that the WEAP model is sensitive to changes in crop type and rainfall at the sub-basin scale, an encouraging finding for future exploration. This investigation enables communities to base future decisions on technical evidence and provides a basis for educating citizens on the importance of evaluating their available resources under climate change projections / text

Quantitative approaches to the network problem in program design and evaluation : case study, entrepreneurshipRichman, Jessica January 2015 (has links)
Many billions of dollars each year are spent in pursuit of economic and social development goals. The field of program evaluation aims to measure the efficacy of these programs and allocate funds to achieve optimal results. However, current research on program design and evaluation tends to focus on determining causality through complex statistical methods, neglecting intermediate measures of data, such as network metrics. Similarly, research in computational social science has focused on generating hypotheses and validating theory rather than economic development applications. This thesis develops a novel technique for using computational social science to design and evaluate social and economic programs. A framework for program design and evaluation using network metrics is presented, along with two case studies that illustrate the use of this technique. In the first, we consider Start-Up Chile, an economic development program whose goal is to foster networks between Chileans and international entrepreneurs, using network metrics to evaluate its ability to facilitate connection between Chilean and non- Chilean entrepreneurs. Second, an agent-based model for designing entrepreneurial incubators is developed, with novel conclusions for more efficient design of economic development programs.
