The role of the school management team in translating school evaluation into school development : a case study of a school in the Western Cape

Booysen, Cedric January 2010 (has links)

A mixed methods approach was employed and included a document study, questionnaires and a focus group interview. Participants included post level one teachers, and non-teaching staff and members of the school management team at one school in the Western Cape. Research findings indicated that the school management team only implemented IQMS to comply with departmental requirements and to ensure that teachers received pay progressions. It also emerged that planning was only done for compliance resulting in no real school development taking place at the school due to a number of constraints. It is recommended that the school management team employs a more balanced approach to school evaluation with a strong focus on both Developmental Appraisal (DA) and Performance Management (PM) as they employ whole school v development. It is further recommended that the school management team plans for school development with the intention to implement these in order to improve the conditions in the school. A final recommendation is that the Department of Education establish a directorate of school development in order to fund and assist schools with translating evaluation into school development.

Human immunodeficiency virus testing and linkage-to-care in South Africa : an epidemiological and economic evaluation of expansion

April, Michael David January 2008 (has links)
This thesis evaluates the cost-effectiveness of eight policies expanding human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing in South Africa. All policies entail provider-initiated test offers for primary healthcare users and one of two options across three policy components: (i) consent method, opt-in or opt-out; (ii) test protocol, rapid only or rapid plus acute infection testing; and (iii) linkage-to-care, standard or enhanced. This thesis highlights four methodological issues. First is the challenge of conducting a population-level analysis, projecting the cost-effectiveness of expanded testing for each member of South Africa’s adult African population. To this end, I conducted a retrospective, descriptive study to measure current population-level testing rates and epidemic descriptors in an African community near Cape Town, South Africa. Second, the effects of testing expansion on current testing uptake were estimated by distinguishing testing in the study community likely to cease after testing expansion (baseline testing) from that likely to continue (background testing). Third, because testing alone is an outcome of less interest than health benefits following treatment, study community linkage-to-care probabilities were estimated and models utilized to estimate the efficacy of treatment. Fourth, the methods to convert the study community testing data into inputs for these models’ parameters are outlined. The enhanced linkage-to-care policies proved the most cost-effective, with opt-in testing and a rapid-only test protocol the least expensive cost-effective option at $848 per life year gained (LYG). Adding an opt-out consent method or acute infection test protocol to this policy increased the LYGs, but at higher cost-effectiveness ratios.

Made available in DSpace on 2015-07-22T20:50:00Z (GMT). / Objective: Evaluate the effectiveness of a food and nutrition educational program in the increase of the consumption of vegetables by school children. Methods: This is a longitudinal randomized controlled study performed in 280 (two hundred and eighty) children, of both genders, aged between 11 (eleven) and 12 (twelve) years old, students of 03 (three) fundamental education schools of São Paulo city, from February to September 2007. At first, all students answered the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and than were divided randomly in two different groups: intervention and control group. After that, the intervention group was submitted to a Food and Nutritional Education Program based on ludo pedagogical activities. After 05 (five) months, the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) was applied again, in order to verify the effectiveness of the food and nutritional education program in increasing the consumption of vegetables. Results: It was observed that in the interventional group, an increase of the consumption of vegetables was significantly bigger than in the control group, indicating that the ludo pedagogical activities may have influenced the children’s eating habit in a positive way. In the control group there were no significant changes. Regarding school children that didn’t have the habit of consuming vegetables, it was observed that in the intervention group the introduction of the consumption of different kinds of vegetable (chard/cabbage, beet, avocado, papaya, mango and strawberry), was greater then in the control group, indicating that the educational intervention method may also have influenced this change. Conclusion: The food and nutrition education based on ludo pedagogical activities is effective in relation to vegetables, both for increasing the previously consumed amount and for the acceptance of different vegetables by school children. / TEDE / BV UNIFESP: Teses e dissertações

Hodnocení efektivnosti investičního projektu / The evaluation of investment project effectiveness

Adam, Josef January 2008 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with issues surrounding the evaluation of investment project effectiveness. Apart from general characteristics and identification of key terminology in the area of investment decision making and capital planning, which are outlined in the theoretical part of this thesis, the section also provides an overview of methods used to evaluate the effectiveness of the investment decision making process. Particular attention is paid to the issue of criteria selection based on cash flows generated by the investment project. Theoretical findings regarding the evaluation of investment effectiveness are then used in the analytical part of this this by evaluating the effectiveness of a real-life investment project.

Gynoid lipodystrophy (H.L.D.G.), the cellulite, is usually treated by cosmetics containing vegetal extracts ingredients. The study related to: ultrasonography evaluating the hypodermis thickness and skin blood microcirculation; the usage of the infra-red thermometer in the measurement of skin temperature and the assessment of anthropometrics measurements of a coadjuvant cosmetic formula based on hydroglycolic extract of Trichilia catigua and Ptychopetalum olacoides Bentham (catuaba and marapuama). Measurements were taken at first and again after the use of the formulation. The results indicate that there were statistically significant changes for skin temperature and also anthropometrics measurements. There were no statistically significant differences neither in hypodermis nor in blood microcirculation. Considering the final results, the formulation studied had a potential coadjuvant role by decreasing gynoid lipodystrophy. These techniques can be associated together with sensory evaluation and cosmetic appreciability. The key requirements for the reproducibility of the technique include: controlled environments, volunteers acclimatization and monitoring, standardized measurements procedures, realistic application protocols and qualified operators.
