The Study of Development Strategies of the Container Liner

Tsai, Chaur-luh 22 June 2004 (has links)
There are two markable ocean going container liners, Evergreen maritime corporation¡]EMC¡^ and Yang Ming maritime corporation¡]YML¡^, in Taiwan. They are listed in the top20 container liners of the world and operating with good repution in this industry. The Evergreen has launched a global service with both the east and the west bound since 1984, and then it continuously expanded bussiness scale and became the biggest container liner around the world in 1985. At same time, YML created a new service model between the Europe-FarEast-North America by pedulum. Therefore, they are the leaders in the shipping industry. They are also honors to our country. The container has initiated in 1960s. After delveloping for decades, the transportation of the container has become as a maturity industry and been competing violently. There were ten great container liners, Mersk/ P&OCL, NOL/ NYK, K-LINE/ MOL, APL/ OOCL and YML/ HANJIN, forming joint venture in 1991. The main container liners became four big global alliances in 1994. And then they regrouped in 1996 and 1999. These few alliances share most part of the market of the world. The local outstanding liner YML, which just shares 1.7% of the market, organizated a ¡§CKYH¡¨ group with COSCO, K-LINE and HANJIN to enhance competition in 2002. However, the Evergreen still keeps as a main outsider of the alliances. The management models of these two local markable liners, Evergreen and YangMing Line, are different. Evergreen is a private company. Nevertheless, the YangMing Line which used to belong to the government and become privatized in 1996. Anyway, both of them have been operating with competition and performing excellently. What kind of strategies did they use before? What are the strategies they are using now? In this paper the author tried to find the strategies of these two companies and create a model of both development and competition for the shipping industry of the container.

Plant growth in Seasonally Tropical Dry Forests (STDF) requires physiological and morphological adjustments in plant metabolism. In this work, the seasonal and annual variations were evaluated in gas exchange, in leaf water potential (Yf), in primary metabolism, in photosynthetic pigments contents, in endogenous hormone levels and leaf anatomy of Cynophalla flexuosa (evergreen) and Annona leptopetala (deciduous), in order to understand which traist are responsible for the onset of phenological patterns. Soil water and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) were environmental factors that induced changes in foliar metabolism in both species, which also have stomatal closure as a primary response to drought conditions. In the evergreen species, jasmonic acid (JA) appeared as an endogenous regulator of stomatal conductance (gs), while salicylic acid (SA) was the main regulator of Yf and water use efficiency (WUE). Furthermore, trans-zeatin (tZ) and the ethylene precursor (ACC) seem to be important for the primary metabolism and pigments control. These hormonal responses reflected in the ability of this species to remain active even during periods of severe drought. Moreover, in the deciduous species a maximization of gs and CO2 assimilation (A) was observed in the rainy periods. Most WUE occurred in the transition drought-rainy season. Also, the survival and growth of this species appear to be related to the dynamics of accumulation and consumption of carbon compounds (carbohydrates, starch, fructose and sucrose) and nitrogen (proteins and aminoacids). Three hormones stood out in the regulation of gas exchange and parameters related to photosynthesis in the deciduous species: ACC, ABA and SA. Our data suggest that the interaction between ACC and ABA played an important role in the regulation of gas exchange and metabolism in A. leptopetala. In addition, SA has proved especially important in periods of low water availability, increasing the WUE and solutes´ remobilization. The species showed distinct leaf anatomy: C.flexuosa showed thick cuticle, epidermis with papillose cells in the abaxial surface, little quantity of air space in the spongy parenchyma, palisade parenchyma with 2-3 layers of cells and stomata located on the abaxial surface are engaged by a structure formed by the ornamentation of periclinal wall which generates a favorable microclimate for gas exchange. A. Leptopetala, presented thin cuticle, with ornamentation formed by epicuticular wax, increased intercellular space, trichomes and substomatal space.

Discriminating Fossil Evergreen and Deciduous Quercus Pollen: A Case Study From the Miocene of Eastern China

Liu, (Christopher) Yu, Zetter, Reinhard, Ferguson, David K., Mohr, Barbara A.R. 01 July 2007 (has links)
In palaeopalynology oaks are rarely identified beyond the generic level. In order to recognize fossil evergreen and deciduous oak pollen, we compiled distinguishing criteria from the literature, most under the SEM, on the living oaks. One of the most significant criteria is the nature of the sculpturing under the SEM. Evergreen oak pollen exhibit at least four kinds of sculpturing, viz. rod-like elements, uniformly fine granules, scabrate-verrucate, and rugulate micromorphology. The first two types of sculpturing are mostly limited to the evergreen oaks and can be used to identify fossil evergreen oak pollen, while the last two types can also be seen in many deciduous oaks. On the other hand, deciduous oak pollen grains have relatively uniform sculpturing, with only two types encountered: scabrate-verrucate and rugulate sculpturing. This sculpturing is mainly present in deciduous oaks, despite its occurrence in some evergreen oaks. An absolute discrimination between evergreen and deciduous oak pollen is thus impossible and would require additional evidence in the form of macrofossils. The diagnostic criteria are applied to a Miocene pollen assemblage from Zhejiang Province, eastern China and demonstrate the high diversity of fossil oaks in the vegetation. The fossil pollen includes three morphotaxa of deciduous origin, two morphotaxa of evergreen habit, and three oaks whose habit is uncertain.

Controlling Christmas: an environmental history of natural and artificial trees

Thomas, Aaron 25 November 2020 (has links)
This dissertation argues that from 1880 to 2010 the American natural and artificial Christmas tree industries remodeled themselves after one another. Artificial tree companies modeled their products after the natural tree, hoping to make them look, smell, and feel like the real thing. As these replica trees became popular, scientists, extension agents, and farmers worked to control the natural Christmas tree crop unlike ever before. Those efforts stemmed from a desire to wrest from nature the same kind of idealized silhouettes their plastic counterparts celebrated. Both industries tried to convince the country’s consumers to buy what they were selling. Through Americans’ shifting Christmas tree experience, this dissertation highlights the evolution of particular cultural and environmental ideas. It reveals how both the natural and artificial tree industries intentionally misled the public about the ecological implications of their businesses. Further, it demonstrates that although many Americans believed that the natural Christmas tree ritual could instill the children’s youth with an appreciation of the outdoors or the value of the hard work symbolized by the felling of a tree and dragging it into the living room, by the 1960s such an outlook became contested unlike ever before. As fake tree companies promised convenience, many citizens looked upon their ersatz tree as a symbol of progress and good environmental stewardship just as others worried that modernity would alienate the nation’s youth from the wild spaces and hard work of their ancestors. This dissertation also considers how gender animated the trade by showing how farmers frequently blamed the nation’s women for their reliance on pesticides. That chemical dependency, farmers maintained, was the only way to grow the shapely trees the nation’s women supposedly demanded. Growers also trivialized the work of women within the business in an effort to bolster their own masculine image. As the crop spawned festivals in some communities, locals equated tree bodies with those of women, overtly implying that beauty was most important in both.
