Herecké prožívání a představování / Represented acting and emotional actingŠvarc, Michal January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is written as a self-reflection of my acting development for past eight years i. e. since enrolling to DAMU untill my current engagement. The main focus is on issues regarding role formation e. g. inability of an ongoing act, deficient playing, spasm etc. in context of emotional acting and represented acting. Utilizing this eight- year time frame I describe how these problems influence me during various phases of my development, how I approached them and eventually my effort to find solution.

Previous issue date: 2010 / The objective of this work is to present an evaluation of the quantificational approach of the problem of existence in the versions defended by Frege, Russell and Quine. This approach is presented having as a background its reaction to the classic model of sentence analysis used by inflationed ontologies derived from Plato’s nonbeing argument, as well as from the Meinong’s Theory of Objects. The basic idea is to show that the inflationed ontology claimed by Plato and Meinong - which, in the most part, is derived from a deficient model of sentence analysis -, can be eliminated through an efficient logical treatment of existence utterances based on the logic of predicates. In spite of internal divergences, the central thesis of proponents of the quantificational approach is that the existence predicate is, from a logical point of view, represented by the existential quantifier (E) of the logic of predicates. I also try to show that, although the quantificational approach represents an advance without precedents in the philosophy concerning to the logical status analysis of the term “exist”, it has some relevant limitations which its proponents have not overcome yet.

The impact of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 on Britain's TravellersMurdoch, Angus January 1999 (has links)
My research is concerned with the impact of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act, 1994 (CJA) on Britain's Travellers, and combines an historical analysis of anti-nomadism with action research in the field. The CJA had been widely interpreted as signaling the beginning of the end of a viable nomadic existencei n Britain, as well as representinga further entrenchmenot f the powers of the state at the expense of civil liberties. In relation to Travellers, the CJA withdrew the former duty to provide adequate sites for Gypsies whilst simultaneously rendering unauthorised sites liable to peremptory evictions, and Travellers themselves faced the prospect of criminalisation for following a nomadic lifestyle. However, the CJA had more far-reaching powers than those directed towards nomads and many of its provisions impinged on the rights to protest, to assemble and to celebrate, The relationship between nomads and the state is a complex one that has evolved over hundreds of years, and invokes issues of ethnicity, 'race' and class with which this research is concerned. Analysing the history of 'Gypsy' people in Britain reveals the processes which, on the one hand, underlie their 'pariah' status and, on the other, render them fictionalised romantic figures of popular folklore. The antithesis of the 'real Gypsy' is arguably the 'New Age' Travellers and the thesis goes on to examine the role this latter group has played in the legitimation of anti-nomadic legislation in our on times. By working with different groups of Gypsy and New Traveller families in their attempts to legalise their sites, the research also examines the effects of the legislation on the everyday lives of real Travellers on the road today, The similarities between the experience of traditional and New Travellers revealed in this analysis are related to their respective marginal positions in society, and reinforce the view that nomadism per se has been rendered problematic in contemporary sedentary discourse.

Le nihilisme et l'existence dans la philosophie de Nietzsche : dans le miroir des penseurs arabes / Nihilism and existence in the philosophy of Nietzsche : in the mirror of arab thinkersChennaf, Lakhdar 19 June 2017 (has links)
Among the great philosophers who had a deep impact on modern Arab thought, is distinctly Nietzsche . Being a heir of a heavy and paralyzing culture, rooted in mores, the Arab subject has been left with no aspiration, openness of mind, or emancipation and the effective use of reason or free thought. That being said, who better than a rebellious, iconoclastic thinker like Nietzsche is able to help the Arabs today to restore their historical heritage to its rightful place in their past; hence, beginning an objective and critical re-reading of this legacy, clearly separate from any ideological or dogmatic tendency. Starting from this inextricable historico-anthropo-philosophical reality, we have tried in our thesis to synthesize a new problematic, by which we bring Nietzsche and modern Arab thought back together, we will stipulate a possible emergence of an Arabi Nietzsche. Our main question then has a double ambition and orientation: first, to redefine the Nietzschean nihilism as a way of thinking whose aim is to demolish the ready-made truths and preconceptions, in order to reach truth which is constructed, refined by criticism, and sober. Yet; Nihilism in this sense is hardly an arbitrary or a premonition for chaos, it's rather a way of doubting about predefined judgments and so-called unquestioned truths. Secondly, to provide Arab thought with this methodical nihilism, in order to, as a first step, confront its socio-religious heritage, full of restrictions, proscriptions and intellectual prohibitions . As for the second phase, it consists to make a courageous and necessary passing, which would produce a dynamic of emancipation of the Arab reason from the constraints of the rigorist tradition.

Analyse asymptotique de systèmes hyperboliques quasi-linéaires du premier ordre / Asymptotic analysis of first-order quasilinear hyperbolic systemsWasiolek, Victor 29 May 2015 (has links)
Hyperbolic systems arise in a large field of sciences : kinetic theory, inviscid reactive flow, magnetohydrodynamics, inviscid gas dynamics, traffic flow, river or glacier flow, sedimentation processes, chemical exchange processes, etc. In these kind of systems, small paramaters often appear, and an asymptotic study may lead to mathematical or computational simplifications. One fundamental problem that we may work on is local and global existence of solutions for these systems, uniformly with respect to these parameters. This Ph.D. thesis includes, on one hand, general results on uniform local existence of solutions for first order quasi-linear hyperbolic systems ; and on the other hand, results on uniform global existence of solutions near constant equilibriums for these same systems. In the case of Euler-Maxwell systems, required conditions are not fulfilled for uniform global existence, then we treat it separately.

Adaptive Density Estimation Based on the Mode Existence TestJawhar, Nizar Sami 01 May 1996 (has links)
The kernel persists as the most useful tool for density estimation. Although, in general, fixed kernel estimates have proven superior to results of available variable kernel estimators, Minnotte's mode tree and mode existence test give us newfound hope of producing a useful adaptive kernel estimator that triumphs when the fixed kernel methods fail. It improves on the fixed kernel in multimodal distributions where the size of modes is unequal, and where the degree of separation of modes varies. When these latter conditions exist, they present a serious challenge to the best of fixed kernel density estimators. Capitalizing on the work of Minnotte in detecting multimodality adaptively, we found it possible to determine the bandwidth h adaptively in a most original fashion and to estimate the mixture normals adaptively, using the normal kernel with encouraging results.

Positive Radial Solutions for P-Laplacian Singular Boundary Value ProblemsWilliams, Jahmario 17 August 2013 (has links)
In this dissertation, we study the existence and nonexistence of positive radial solutions for classes of quasilinear elliptic equations and systems in a ball with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Our nonlinearities are asymptotically p-linear at infinity and are allowed to be singular at zero with non-positone structure, which have not been considered in the literature. In the one parameter single equation problem, we are able to show the existence of a positive radial solution with precise lower bound estimate for a certain range of the parameter. We also extend the study to a class of asymptotically p-linear system with two parameters and in the presence of singularities. We establish the existence of a positive solution with a precise lower bound estimate when the product of the parameters is in a certain range. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a positive solution are also obtained for both the single equation and system under additional assumptions. Our approach is based on the Schauder Fixed Point Theorem.

Contemporary Challenges to Quinean OntologyPikkert, Owen 10 1900 (has links)

In this master’s thesis I defend a Quinean approach to ontology. I first describe the Quinean approach as consisting of three steps and three theses. All three theses have been challenged in the contemporary literature. In each chapter I describe one such challenge, and then provide a response. The first challenge states that ontology is actually easy. Proponents of this challenge include Matti Eklund’s maximalist, as well as Amie Thomasson. In response, I argue that the maximalist cannot consistently determine whether abstract entities exist. I also argue that Thomasson’s account involves a certain slide in logic and is, in certain cases, ontologically uninformative. I then turn to the second challenge, which states that traditional ontological questions are not even worth pursuing. Here I discuss the work of Rudolf Carnap and of Jonathan Schaffer. I argue that Carnap fails to provide a cogent argument for the meaninglessness of ontological questions. Furthermore, I argue that one should not adopt Schaffer’s Aristotelian view of metaphysics and ontology. I do so by constructing an argument, logically parallel to one of Schaffer’s own, to demonstrate that there are no fundamental grounds. Finally, I consider the challenge posed by an ambiguity in ‘existence’. According to Eli Hirsch, such an ambiguity results in verbal disputes. Hirsch argues that the remedy is to adopt ordinary English. In response, I accept that ‘existence’ is ambiguous. But I deny that this poses a significant problem for Quinean ontology.
/ Master of Philosophy (MA)

On an Order-Parameter Model of Solid-Solid Phase TransitionsMackin, Gail S. 20 August 1997 (has links)
We examine a model of solid-solid phase transitions that includes thermo-elastic effects and an order parameter. The model is derived as a special case of the Gurtin-Fried model posed in one space dimension with a symmetric triple-well free energy in which the relative heights of the wells vary with temperature. We examine the temperature independent case, showing existence of a unique classical solution of a regularized system of partial differential equations using semigroup theory. This is followed by numerical study of a finite element algorithm for the temperature independent model. Finally, we present computational material concerning the temperature dependent model. / Ph.
