Dramatic space : Jerzy Grotowski and the recovery of the ritual function of theatre

Georges, Pierre Marie. January 2002 (has links)
This thesis explores temporal forms of architectural meaning through the investigation of the dramatic space of "ritual theatre." In particular, it analyzes the thought and several theatrical productions of the twentieth century Polish theatre director, Jerzy Grotowski: Grotowski is of particular interest because he designed a "total dramatic space" that incorporated both the actors and the spectators (although without necessarily integrating them) for each of his dramatic works. In each case, the spatial relationships created by the theatrical architecture were indissolubly connected to the meaning of the drama itself. In this way, space was used as a kind of third protagonist that, along with the actors and spectators, participates in the theatrical ritual.

Adoptable Space

Wenzel, Andreas 29 December 2004 (has links)
This project investigates an idea of adoptable space as opposed to adaptable space of generic flexibility. An Experimental Performing Arts Center on a site in Downtown Chattanooga is used as a vehicle to define the nature of space, which offers itself for an architectural adoption. Simple elements like platforms, walls, doors, windows and curtains are interpreted in a new way and can be used experimentally to let a theater play happen. / Master of Architecture

The thesis will be divided into the following parts: the introduction will focus on the objectives of the research, review of literature, and the blueprint of methodology. Chapter One will define some basic concepts and introduce the historical background. Chapter Two will explore the relationship between modern city and the Avant-garde drama in terms of "modern city", thus leading to four relevant parts: new ways to understand space and time, cultural transformation, global spectacle and new media. Chapter Three will turn to the definition of the Avant-garde drama, discussing the relationship between the specific areas of drama (drama practitioners, motives of the drama, stage scenery, spectatorship, and body) and the modern city. Chapter Four will analyze in details the cases in two metropolis: Beijing and Shanghai, particularly comparing their cultural background, production situation, the type and quality of the production and the spectator groups. The variation of the urban culture influences the production choices of the Avant-garde drama; while the Avant-garde drama reflects the cultural transformation of different cities. In addition, this chapter will briefly analyze the drama as a carrier of cultural interaction of cities, and I will conduct a comparative study in this interchange and interaction. The results of the above research will be concluded in the final chapter. / The thesis will discourse on the context of contemporary mainland China, and analyze the inner tensions lying in a complex matrix of contending relationships between the modern city and the Avant-garde drama. I will try to explore the characteristics, situation, evolution and future possibilities of the dramas in the context of modern urban society, while probing into the situation and symptoms of modern Chinese cities in relation to the Avant-garde drama. I will find out the construction of the power relationships concomitant with the cultural transformation in mainland China from 1990s, and will explore the possibility of the Avant-garde theatre as a public space as well as the modern city's stimulation and facilitation of this possibility. / 李婭菲. / Advisers: Thomas Luk; Natalia Chan. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 70-06, Section: A, page: 1840. / Thesis (doctoral)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2008. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 214-230). / Electronic reproduction. Refusal and rupture as a postdramatic revolt : an analysis of selected South African contemporary devised performances with particular focus on works by First Physical Theatre Company and the Rhodes University Drama Department

Haxton, Robert Peter January 2014 (has links)
This mini-thesis investigates the concepts of refusal and rupture as a postdramatic revolt and how these terms can be applied and read within the context of analysing contemporary devised performance in South Africa. The argument focuses on the efficacy of Hans-Thies Lehmann’s postdramatic terminology and the potential of its use in an appreciation of contemporary performance analysis. I investigate the potential in South African contemporary devised performance practice to challenge prevailing modes of traditional dramatic expectation in order to restore the experience of discovery and questioning in the spectator. This research is approached through a qualitative process which entails a reading and application of selected critical texts to the analysis with an application of Lehmann’s terminology. This reading/application is engaged in a dialogue with the interpretative and experiential aspects of selected South African devised performances with particular focus on four cross-disciplinary works selected for analysis. Chapter One functions as an introduction to the concept of postdramatic theatre and the application of the terms refusal and rupture as deconstructive keywords in the process of a devised performance. Chapter Two is an analysis of several South African contemporary performances with particular focus on Body of Evidence (2009) by Siwela Sonke Dance Company, Wreckage (2011) a collaboration by Ubom! Eastern Cape Drama Company and First Physical Theatre Company, Discharge (2012) by First Physical Theatre Company, and Drifting (2013) by The Rhodes University Drama Department. This mini-thesis concludes with the idea that with an understanding of refusal and rupture in a postdramatic revolt, contemporary devised performance achieves an awakening in its spectators by deconstructing the expectation of understanding and the need for resolve; the assumption and need for traditional dramatic structures and rules are challenged. Instead, it awakes an experience of discovery and questioning.

La critique de la « société du Spectacle » à l’essai sur les scènes théâtrales de Berlin, Londres et Paris dans les années 2000 : spectacle dans le spectacle, la société spectaculaire et marchande au prisme du spectacle vivant / Critics of the “Society of the Spectacle” on trial on theater stages in Berlin, London and Paris in the 2000s : spectacle within the spectacle, the spectacular and mercantile society through the prism of live art

Chehilita, Émilie 16 October 2018 (has links)
This thesis tackles the critic of the “Society of the Spectacle” (concept brought by the Guy Debord’s eponymous essay) performed in experimental theater works and the performance scenes during the 2000s in Berlin, London and Paris. The studied theater pieces borrow cultural references to the mass media, often considered as machines to alienate the public. The corpus includes authors as well as stage directors and collectives: Martin Crimp, David Alaya, Joël Jouanneau, Falk Richter, René Pollesch, Tom Khünel, Katie Mitchell, the Collective MxM (Cyril Teste), Forced Entertainment (Tim Etchells), Gob Squad and Superamas. The multidisciplinary approach deals with both the dramaturgy aspects and the sociological patterns of representation. One the one hand, this work studies the network structure in which the artists meet each others and collaborate. On the other hand, we investigate the various stage elements, among which cameras and screens take an major part, as well as the actors’ corporeality as well as the spectators’ ways of perception, among others, by the mean of a survey. By trans-contextualizing their sources, the artists create a gap and increase the distance with them using several techniques: literal incorporation, quotation, parody and pastiche, but also irony and cool fun tone. The critical dimension of these works is not straight forward, and often not even claimed. Far from rejecting it as a whole, the authors and actors are fond of the mass media culture’s objects. In order to set in motion their critical function, they place themselves at the heart of the “Society of the Spectacle” and the Zeitgeist. Thus, such a critic has moved from an external point of view to an internal one. Their approach, mixing seriousness and fun, indicates a will not to separate themselves from the spectators to whom they want to set on equal footing in order to make the dialogue and sometimes the interaction possible.
