Increasing multiplication and division fluency : embedding self-regulation strategies within systematic, strategic instructionPfannenstiel, Kathleen Lynn 19 September 2011 (has links)
Students need to develop computational proficiency with basic facts (i.e., addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to be successful in more advanced mathematics such as instruction in fractions, decimals, ratios, and rates (Gersten et al., 2009; NCTM, 2010; NMAP, 2008). Specifically, the Curriculum Focal Points for Prekindergarten through Grade 8 Mathematics (NCTM, 2006) stresses the importance of automaticity in basic facts and the application of these skills to solving word problems. For older elementary students, it is vital that they are proficient in multiplication and related division facts in preparation for working with fractions and other algebra readiness skills. Thus, the purpose of this study was to teach multiplication and division facts using systematic, strategic instruction with and without self-regulation strategies. A single-subject, time-series design was employed to measure items correct on daily probes with nine, fourth grade students. The daily probes were designed with 15 review facts and 25 new facts to measure the ability to solve easy, review facts with automaticity and hard facts specifically taught during instruction. All instruction occurred in small groups (4 – 5 students), after school, with a trained instructor. The students received strategic, systematic instruction in hard multiplication and division facts (9s, 4/6/8s and 7s) with and without additional self-regulation components (self-correction, graphing and goal setting). Multiplication and division were taught together as a fact family, rather than apart, to increase conceptual understanding of the relation between multiplication and division. The findings showed that the students made positive growth in both operations in terms of items correct and fluency; with an increase in accuracy and decrease in time to reach phase change criteria when the intervention was embedded with self-regulation components. Findings from social validity measures from participants support the use of self-regulation as a means to increase motivation. / text

Totožnost skutku / Identical facts of crimeSýkorová, Dáša January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of my thesis is to describe and analyze the subject of the identical facts of crime. The reason for my research is the close relation of this subject to the practical decision-making by the courts in particular. The thesis is composed of three main chapters, each of them dealing with different aspects of the identical facts of crime. Chapter One focuses on the introduction to the legal regulation of the identical facts of crime in Czech legislation. By reference of several cases it presents the general principles accompanying the courts'consideration of the identical facts of crime. Chapter Two concentrates on the international context of the identical facts of crime. It is subdivided in two parts. Part One looks at the EU-regulation and the decision-making by the Court of Justice of the EU and subsequently, part Two illustrates the approach of the European Court of Human Rights to the interpretation of the Article 7 Protocol Nr. 4 to the European Convention of Human Rights. Chapter Three examines the problems resulting from the incorrect translation of the term "offence" used in Article 4 Protocol 7 to the European Convention of Human Rights into Czech language. Furthermore it focuses on the key decision of the Supreme Court in 2004, which adjusted the interpretation of the above...

This work presents studies with respect to the dynamic stability of a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system, with a phase shifter installed (SMIB/PS system). The development of a linear model system, analogous to the linear model of Heffron & Phillips is presented. The constants that define the model are analyzed to evaluate the impact of the PS when operating under machine load variations conditions. The introduction of damping in the power system is analyzed through simulation by the dynamic of the PS. The manual and automatic shift introductions are studied. For the automatic adjustment of the shift, initially a control system is defined, and the analysis is effectuated the analysis with the input signal variations of the rotor speed. Afterwards the input signals variations of the electric current and variations of the electric power are studied. The influence of the inputs on the formation of the electric torque (damping and synchronism) on the SMIB system is analyzed. Results and conclusions are shown from simulations effectuated for an example system.

The Effect of CIBS Participation and Gender on Adolescent Residential Treatment DurationDority, Tyler Maxwell 01 January 2016 (has links)
Additional out-of-home placement rates for adolescents in long-term regional treatment center (LTRT) programs in the United States are between 50% and 75%. There appears to be a failure to generalize treatment to home and community in programs that do not fully integrate family involvement. The collaborative intensive bridging services (CIBS) treatment model uses intensive family therapy and brief residential treatment center (RTC) placement to reduce or eliminate use of LTRT. Using family systems theory, the purpose of this study was to determine whether participation in CIBS provided better outcomes than LTRT programs. The study used archival data collected by Family Adolescents and Children's Family Services, Inc. and children's mental health providers in a certain Minnesota county over approximately 5 years. There were 33 adolescents in the CIBS group and 33 in the LTRT group. The 3 research questions were (1) did the CIBS group have significantly fewer total out-of-home placements than the LTRT group, (2) did gender have any effect on this, and (3) were there any interaction effects on total out-of-home placement days from the combination of gender and program participation. Results of two-way ANOVA analyses showed a significant main effect for the first research question (p = .00, partial ɳ-² = .40), no significant main effect for the second (p = .46, partial ɳ-² = .01), and no significant main effect for the third (p = .15, partial ɳ-² = .03). These findings supported the position that participation in CIBS treatment resulted in statistically fewer total out-of-home placement days (TPD) than participation in LTRT. Social change implications include improved individual and family functioning for families in need as well as reduced financial expenditure for treatment.
