Weather Data Gamification

Gargate, Rohit 16 December 2013 (has links)
Climate change is an important issue for public policy. Unfortunately, although there are volumes of data about climate change, many members of the public are informed about the issue by politicized interpretations of the data. This is an impediment to planning policies and strategies to counter the impact of climate change, and identifies a need for climate awareness in the public. This thesis explores using gamification to motivate people to learn about long term trends in climate data. As a model for this edutainment activity, we choose a medium that engages millions of players to learn about large sets of data - Fantasy Sports. Fantasy sports have been shown to increase the player’s knowledge and understanding about the domain of the sport being played. With the huge amount of weather data available, we have designed and developed a fantasy weather game. People manage a team of cities with the goal of predicting weather better than other players in their league, and in the process gain an understanding of the weather patterns and climate change trends for those cities. We do a user-study to evaluate our application and prove its feasibility. An evaluation of the fantasy weather game indicates that the game had the desired effect of causing players to explore weather data in more detail. The evaluation also pointed out a number of potential improvements to the current prototype. Overall, the evaluation supports using the model of fantasy sports to motivate people to learn more about weather and climate data.

Leahy, Rory John 01 May 2017 (has links)
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF RORY LEAHY, for the Master of Fine Arts degree in THEATER, presented on *MARCH 28, 2017, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: JOURNEY TOWARDS ADEQUACY: THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS OF TORAK THE INADEQUATE MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Jacob Juntunen This thesis documents the development of my play Torak The Inadequate from its earliest conception to its full production performed by the SIUC Department of Theater in its Christian H. Moe Laboratory space in March of 2017. The play is a synthesis of pulp fantasy, social commentary, and comedy that tells the story of a young hunter-gatherer living in ancient times named Torak, who with his unlikely companions Ragnor and Belit, must journey across the prehistoric world to find a new home. Chapter One explores the play’s beginnings, influences from other stories and genre elements and rough outline. Chapter Two concerns the writing and revision processes themselves. Chapter Three deals with the pre-production of the SIUC rendition of the show. Chapter Four details the production, from auditions to performance. Chapter Five is an artistic autobiography in which I put Torak in the larget context of my work both before my MFA program and after. The production script of Torak as well as production photos will serve as appendices.

This work proposes initially to investigate the main literary features that define Fantasy literature and Role Playing Game books, in order to subsequently demonstrate the dialogic process involving them both. In order to better illustrate this relations, this work will focus on the series of brazilian Role Playing Game books named “Tormenta”, one of the most exemplar works on national genre production, as well as the Fantasy novel “O Inimigo do Mundo”, by Leonel Caldela, that represents the first attempt of incursion in the fields of RPG-based fiction by our literature. The intention is to demonstrate that, more than simply appropriating itself from literature’s themes and figures, Role Playing Game books establish with them a complete relationship of Exchange and recycling, and this observations will here be understood under the lights of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories, as well as his main Brazilian researchers’

January 2014 (has links)
Atenta-se, ainda, para a questão do gênero literário nos referidos contos, analisando sua construção através da personagem feminina, enquanto representação do fenômeno insólito que aparece nas narrativas / Abstract: This work presents a reflection about the configuration of fantastic female characters in the following three works: "Ojos Verdes" (1981), by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, "Mi vida con la ola" (1949-50), by Octavio Paz and "Historia del lagarto que tenía la costumbre de cenar a sus mujeres" (1993), by Eduardo Galeano. In view of the mythcritical studies prospect that comtemplates the malefic female ancestral aspect, observe the way that they produce the manifestations of the femme fatale, linked to the terrible female and to the waters in different times. Thus analized a symbolic representation that we call mermaid-woman, a image that, full of mythical load, presents in these three tales on contours of the archetypal figure of seductive and attractive woman, but damage causer, dangerous and sometimes, deadly. Also, attentive to the literary genre issue in these tales analyzing its construction through the female character, as an unusual phenomenon representation in the narratives / Mestre
