International Strategy of Non-Profit Organizations - A Case Study on Fo Guang Shan

Sun, Pao-Hui 05 December 2006 (has links)
The role that non-profit organizations play is becoming more and more important in today¡¦s society. NPOs¡¦ presence and responsibilities are essential to the well being of their communities. As Peter Drucker said, the goal of NPO management is not to create profit, but to focus attention on the mission statement. The mission statement drives the activities of the organization, and therefore holds an integral position. This dissertation will focus on Fo Guang Shan¡¦s international achievements, while classifying their strategy using a SWOT analysis. It will delve into the mission of their organization, the character of their leaders, the experience of their work, the recognition of their organizational target, and their dedication to research. The findings of this dissertation are as follows: 1.The concepts held by the NPO leaders will heavily influence the organization. This case study found that Hsing Yun pushed Fo Guang Shan to expand and perform on an international level. 2.Now is the time for economic knowledge and for localized cultural education. For example, Fo Guang Shan has established Chinese schools and Buddhist universities overseas, planting the seed of knowledge in the minds of others. This will influence the values of foreigners and Buddhists alike, raising the understanding and practice of Buddhist philosophies. 3.NPOs advance vigorously to diversify in multiple engagements. They perform as do for-profit organizations, earning the admiration of businesses for the innovation put forth, such as that of Mr. Shi Jhen Rong. Research, innovation, and marketing together create the ¡§smile curve¡¨. And Fo Guang Shan¡¦s ¡§smile curve¡¨ is one that easily shines through. 4.Fo Guang Shan¡¦s dedication to spread Buddhism is not only limited to the temple; another method used is to establish private teachers who spread the success of this organization. 5.This source of this diversification is their established system. For example, the chairmen of all temples rotate locations regularly. This method creates leaders that work well. They use their resources and environments to encourage internationalization and to meet people of different religions and cultures. This fosters flexibility and adaptation.

Aristophanes to Fo : conventions of political satire in Western theatre

Guy, Bette Margaret January 2007 (has links)
Aristophanes to Fo is a study of the principal comedic conventions of Aristophanes' political satire and their relationship to contemporary political satire. A template of these principal conventions is tabulated. This is then compared to, and contrasted with, conventions used in subsequent plays in the genre of political satire, including one written as the practice component of this exegesis. This process determines the influence of Aristophanic conventions on political satire from 4th century BCE Greece to the modern era. There is an analytical emphasis on three 20th century plays as case studies and on my play, Soft Murder, which is case study number four. At the core of the research is the hypothesis that Aristophanic comedic conventions are still relevant to the genre of political satire in contemporary theatre. To retain relevance the genre should be a discourse on a situation or event that has social as well as political meaning to its audience and its presentation should have entertainment value for the culture of the time. Soft Murder is a fundamental part of this process and is written concurrently with the research component.

Protecting the Diversity of the Depths: Strengthening the International Law Framework

Warner, Robin Margaret Fraser January 2006 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy(PhD) / It is only in recent decades that marine scientific research has begun to reveal the true physical characteristics and resource potential of the open ocean and deep seabed beyond national jurisdiction. A combination of factors such as the depletion of inshore fish stocks and an increase in global maritime trade has led to greater usage of the vast maritime area beyond the territorial sea and exclusive economic zone limits of the coastal states. Human activities in this area of the ocean, which covers approximately 50% of the world’s surface, have expanded to include bioprospecting, exploration for deep seabed minerals, more sophisticated marine scientific research and deep sea tourism. This rise in human activities beyond the offshore zones of coastal states poses actual and potential threats to the physical characteristics and biodiversity of the open ocean and deep sea environments. Arbitrary human intrusions into this largely unexplored marine domain have the potential to harm the intricate links between complex marine ecosystems and to erode components of marine biodiversity. This thesis examines the global and regional provisions which have been put in place to regulate the environmental impacts of human activities that occur beyond national jurisdiction. An analysis of these instruments and their implementation reveals that the current international law framework provides only minimal levels of protection for the marine environment beyond national jurisdiction. It explores several options based on the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOSC) and the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to establish a cohesive environmental protection system for the marine environment beyond national jurisdiction.

Portraits de l’histrion en auteur : Dario Fo ou les représentations d’un homme-théâtre / Portraits of the jester as an author : Dario Fo or the representations of a theatre-man

Dumont-Lewi, Laetitia 04 November 2014 (has links)
Dario Fo is a theatre-man whose work ceaselessly redefines the author as an actor and the actor as an author, in a process that claims his dual position on stage and in public life. He thus creates an approach to theatre that, though not radically new, distinguishes itself in the theatrical landscape of his time, by encroaching on other fields of activity and competency, earning him a global recognition as an actor and intellectual. The first part of this study analyzes the creative process and shows how Dario Fo stages himself as an author through writing, acting and directing. The second part considers how the authorial figure is presented to the public : as part of a larger network of references that lends coherence to his work as a whole, in the fixation of this work through publishing, audio and video-recording and archiving, and through the circulation of his productions in Italy and the world, with or without his presence. The third part analyzes the construction of his intellectual authority, his promotion to the status of political spokesman and mentor.

An analysis of environmental obligations and liabilities of a distribution division to improve ecologically sustainable development

Tomsana, Aphelele January 2018 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Environmental Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018. / Worldwide, there is a growing about the protection of the environment while ensuring social and economic development for the benefit of the existing and forthcoming generation which pressures every person to take reasonable measures when conducting his/her business. Amongst the reasonable measures, there are environmental legislative provisions enacted by the international community, as well as locally, to regulate required actions for the protection of the environment. South Africa’s environmental legislation outlines ecologically sustainable development by making provisions in the Bill of Rights in the Constitution for everyone to take reasonable legislative measures to alleviate damaging impacts on the environment. International conventions have assisted South Africa and other countries worldwide in environmental protection, thus improving ecologically sustainable development. Eskom’s (the South African power utility) distribution department, referred to as the Company from here onwards, has established environmental objectives and commitments to prevent pollution, promote environmental reporting, comply with all the applicable environmental legislations and other relevant requirements to ensure performance is measured and continual improvement is achieved. The research used both quantitative and qualitative research methods to analyse environmental obligations and associated environmental liabilities of the Company to improve ecologically sustainable development. In order to answer the research questions and achieve the objectives, a set of questionnaires was distributed to sampled respondents; data were retrieved using SAP EH&S Incident Management software while independent variable (environmental obligation) and dependent variables (environmental liability and ecologically sustainable development) were identified. Site visits were also conducted. Furthermore, a correlation coefficient analysis test was calculated using Microsoft excel and a graph was used to illustrate the R-Square value. Positive (+1) relationship between variables was observed which indicates dependability of dependent variable to the independent variable. The research findings indicate that the environment can be safeguarded through understanding and implementing environmental obligations and environmental liabilities to protect the environment for the benefit of the current and future generations by improving ecologically sustainable development. South Africa (1998a) explained that the environment is held in public trust for the people, thus the beneficial use of environmental resources serves the public interest and the environment must be safeguarded as a common heritage. Therefore, anyone found to have contravened legislation will be held liable in the form of sanctions as stated in South Africa, (1998c). An environmental obligation is a duty of care imposed on the user, landowner or a person in control of the protection of the environment and, where protection is impossible, to remediate the impact for the benefit of contemporary and upcoming generations. This is reasonably in line with the principles of sustainable development and a continual improvement of environmental quality and services. There have been dependent variables in the research where both environmental liability and ecologically sustainable development are dependent on environmental obligations (an independent variable) being realised. For this reason, every person or institution should ensure that environmental obligations are understood, adhered to and ensure that ecologically sustainable development is achieved. The Company has undertaken business activities to ensure that electricity is distributed to a wider population, bearing in mind that the interaction may have negative impact on the environment. When any incident that degrades the environment occurs, the incident is reported and managed throughout its life-cycle. There are, however, cases where environmental obligations are not understood or implemented. There is a need to ensure that all people that undertake activities that have a negative impact on the environment, such as pollution of the environment, are properly trained to be able to identify such activities, set environmental objectives and management programmes. Additionally, monitor the implementation of those programmes to ensure that these objectives are met and to achieve ecologically sustainable development. Ecologically sustainable development is achieved when environmental obligations are adhered to and required environmental liabilities are implemented and monitored. SANS ISO 14001: 2015 is an Environmental Management System which can be implemented to help any company understand its business operations, identify environmental issues, find solutions and ensure that all environmental issues are addressed, and good environmental performance is realized.
