Magnetite-laden Douglas fir biochar for arsenic and perfluoroalkyl substances contaminated water remediation and struvite/struvite-K rich Douglas fir biochar for soil remediation

Rodrigo, Paththinihannadige W. K. P. M. 10 May 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Ensuring the safety of drinking water, treating wastewater, and remediating soil are ongoing global concerns. Adsorption is a favorable substitute for traditional methods including coagulation, precipitation, membrane separation, and ion-exchange in water purification. Biochar-based sorbents are cheap and effective due to high density surface functional groups, which can retain a wide range of chemicals. This dissertation focused on three main projects involving magnetite (Fe3O4) and struvite/struvite-K (MgNH4PO4.6H2O/MgKPO4.6H2O) deposited high surface area Douglas fir biochar (DFBC) based engineered material for water and soil remediation. Chapter II focuses on toxic arsenic (V) contaminated wastewater remediation using magnetite particles dispersed Douglas fir biochar. This chapter highlights the effect of pH, adsorption kinetics, isotherms, particle sizes, ionic strength, the impact of competitive ions and fixed-bed column sorption on As(V) removal and redox transformation of As(III) to As(V) during the adsorption in a wide range of pHs. Moreover, Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to analyze the composition of Fe3O4 particles formed on Fe3O4/DFBC. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies were conducted to study As(V) adsorption onto Fe3O4/DFBC at a wide range of solution pHs to verify the predominant As adsorption mechanisms. Chapter III focuses on challenging per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contaminated water remediation at low concentrations using Fe3O4/DFBC. In this work, we used classical adsorption techniques to purify PFAS contaminated water. Chapter IV is focused on remediation of depleted soil using struvite/struvite-K- modified Douglas fir biochar (BCF). In this study, we examined the leaching rates of PO43-, NH4+, K+, and Mg2+ from BCF in different water matrices, different temperatures, and a wide range of pHs. Greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate the performances of BCF.

Wermland Forever? : En undersökning om hur Karlstads kommuns varumärkesidentitet avspeglas i Wermland Forever / Wermland Forever? : A study of Karlstad’s brand and how it is reflected in the television show Wermland Forever

Plöen, Leo, Bränneby, Helena January 2013 (has links)
Titel: Wermland Forever? A study about Karlstad’s brand and how it is reflected in the television show Wermland Forever. Purpose: The paper aims to study the way a marketing action could affect the brand and image of a city. In this case, it’ about the show Wermland Forever and the money Karlstads municipal spent on it. The show was followed by outraged viewers and bad ratings. Karlstad got a lot of criticism because of the way Wermland Forever didn’t communicate Karlstad’s values. Issues: What does the Karlstad brand identity look like? What does the Karlstad brand image look like? How is Karlstad perceived in Wermland Forever? What is the relation between the Karlstad brand identity and brand image compared to the way Karlstad is presented in Wermland Forever? Theory: The paper is to a large extent based on Simon Anholt’s four dimensions of a brand and Hart & Stachow’s framework to measure the image of Karlstad. Besides, theories of brand equity and place branding were used. Method: The study aims to look at Karlstad and its brand profile through authentic documents and an interview with the head of culture and recreation in Karlstad. A survey has been made to measure the public view of Karlstad and Wermland Forever. Results: The study shows that Karlstad has a strong brand with an identity and an image that is well in line. Wermland Forever showed an image of the county that is not in line with aforementioned identity. Key words: Karlstad, Karstad municipal, Värmland, brand, image, television, Wermland Forever

The Formative Evaluation of a Family Life Education Website

Steimle, Brynn Marie 29 July 2003 (has links)
Hundreds of family life education (FLE) websites are now available on the Internet, allowing individuals and families unprecedented access to FLE information. Evaluation is critical to ensuring the quality of and improving FLE websites, yet few FLE website evaluations have been conducted. This study formatively evaluated a new family life education website, called Forever Families (http://www.foreverfamilies.net or http://foreverfamilies.byu.edu), assessing website utilization using Web-based software, and receiving visitor feedback through the use of an online survey. Quantitative survey items assessed knowledge gains, how interesting the content was, usefulness, attractiveness, ease of use of the website, whether or not the site met visitors' needs, and to what extent the website led visitors to reconsider former attitudes and decide to make changes in their lives. The researcher sought to discover whether there were statistical differences in participant ratings by demographic variables. Open-ended items requested further information to assist the researcher in understanding the quantitative responses. Statistics compiled by Web-based software revealed that the website was highly utilized by individuals throughout the world. Participant ratings of the website and responses to open-ended items revealed the website was well received and had a positive impact on the participants. Website ratings did not substantially vary by participant characteristics, except for education level and ethnicity. Participants provided many helpful suggestions for website improvement.

Development of an Integral Finite Element Model for the Simulation of Scaled Core-Meltdown-Experiments

Willschütz, Hans-Georg, Altstadt, Eberhard 31 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
To get an improved understanding and knowledge of the processes and phenomena during the late phase of a core melt down accident the FOREVER-experiments (Failure of Reactor Vessel Retention) are currently underway. These experiments are simulating the lower head of a reactor pressure vessel under the load of a melt pool with internal heat sources. The geometrical scale of the experiments is 1:10 compared to a common Light Water Reactor. During the first series of experiments the Creep behaviour of the vessel is investigated. Due to the multi-axial creep deformation of the three-dimensional vessel with a non-uniform temperature field these experiments are on the one hand an excellent possibility to validate numerical creep models which are developed on the basis of uniaxial creep tests. On the other hand the results of pre-test calculations can be used for an optimized experimental procedure. Therefore a Finite Element model is developed on the basis of the multi-purpose commercial code ANSYS/Multiphysics®. Using the Computational Fluid Dynamic module the temperature field within the vessel wall is evaluated. The transient structural mechanical calculations are performed applying a creep model which is able to take into account great temperature, stress and strain variations within the model domain. The new numerical approach avoids the use of a single creep law with constants evaluated for a limited stress and temperature range. Instead of this a three-dimensional array is developed where the creep strain rate is evaluated according to the actual total strain, temperature and equivalent stress for each element. Performing post-test calculations for the FOREVER-C2 experiment it was found that the assessment of the experimental data and of the numerical results has to be done very carefully. A slight temperature increase during the creep deformation stage of the experiment for example could explain the creep behaviour which appears to be tertiary because of the accelerating creep strain rate. Taking into account both - experimental and numerical results - gives a good opportunity to improve the simulation and understanding of real accident scenarios.

Interaktionsritualer i två onlinemiljöer : En netnografisk jämförelse mellan grupperna Incels och Forever Alone Women / Interaction rituals in two online environments. : A netnographic comparison between the groups of Incels and Forever Alone Women

Wilhelmsson, Sabina, Fransson, Hanna January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to make a netnographic comparison between the groups of Incels and Forever Alone Women in a way that has not been done before. With the study, we want to shine new light on how online interactions take place and how these affect people. The study uses Collins' theory of interaction rituals to highlight how people create bonds and feelings for each other through written language and how these affect them even when the computer is turned off. The study was carried out through a non-participation in the forums Incels.is and Reddit.com, where the focus has been on the use of language and repetitions of the language. The collected material has then been analyzed through a thematic analysis to then carry out a comparison between the groups to demonstrate similarities and differences. The results and analysis demonstrate how the interactions that take place online have a major impact on the participants' self-images and the ways in which conversations take place in the forums. The study has been able to show how the groups discuss similar topics but how the conversations look completely different between the forums. Collins' theory was helpful in creating an understanding of causality, that is, the cause and effect of why the interactions look the way they do in the specific groups. The response participants receive to their posts has proven to be of great importance in understanding why they continue to participate and reproduce what is written in the forums. The closeness that is created in the forums gives rise to an emotional energy and a feeling of similarity to the other participants, which has proven to be of great importance in order to stay in the forums. The conclusion is that two groups that suffer from the same kind of exclusion deal with it in different ways.

Reading Political Hope: Temporal And Historical Modelling In Contemporary Canadian Fiction

Jackson, Elizabeth A. 05 1900 (has links)

This dissertation examines explicit and implicit conceptualizations of time and history in four contemporary Canadian novels: Allan Donaldson's Maclean, Joy Kogawa's Obasan, Margaret Laurence's The Diviners, and Lee Maracle's Daughters are Forever. Performing close textual analysis from a posture of 'deliberate empathy,' the author identifies several key textual devices and concepts that signal the texts' alternate ideas about time and history. These include temporal simultaneity, historical multiplicity, and the presence of the past. Drawing on critical work from fields including literary theory, globalization and cultural studies, indigenous studies and anthropology, the author investigates the political significance of the texts' different historical and temporal models. She argues that the way individuals and cultures understand time and history bears significant influence on the ways in which they understand their ethical relationships with and responsibility toward the world around them. The dissertation closes with a call for further engagement with questions of temporality and for continued efforts to link pedagogical activity to struggles for human rights.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
