Modelo de confiabilidade associando dados de garantia e pós-garantia a três comportamentos de falhas / Reliability model for warranty and post-warranty data presenting three failure behaviours

Nesta tese, apresenta-se um modelo de confiabilidade estatística para aplicação em dados de vida de um produto, buscando classificar três modos de falhas distintos associados à ocorrência de falhas prematuras, aleatórias e por desgaste. A ocorrência dos três modos de falhas segue os princípios de aplicação dos modelos teóricos por riscos concorrentes e seccionais. O modelo proposto utiliza duas distribuições de Weibull, com dois e três parâmetros, e uma distribuição exponencial. A distribuição de Weibull com dois parâmetros tem por objetivo representar os modos de falhas prematuras: a distribuição de Weibull com três parâmetros busca capturar os modos de falhas por desgaste; a distribuição exponencial mede a ocorrência de falhas aleatórias decorrentes de uso operacional de um produto. Considera-se que falhas prematuras e por desgaste ocorram seqüencialmente, enquanto falhas aleatórias ocorram de forma concorrente às falhas prematuras e por desgaste tão logo o produto seja colocado em operação. Para dimensionar o número de ocorrências vinculadas aos três modos de falhas são utilizados dados coletados durante o período de garantia e pós-garantia. Os dados de garantia são registros históricos do produtor e os dados da pós-garantia referem-se a informações obtidas de especialistas, já que dados após a garantia apresentam elevado nível de censura. Equações de confiabilidade e estimadores de máxima verossimilhança são apresentados para definir o perfil e os parâmetros do modelo proposto. Um estudo de caso com dados coletados de um equipamento elétrico-eletrônico subsidia a aplicação do modelo enquanto que um teste estatístico de ajuste de dados é utilizado para validar o referido modelo. / This thesis presents a reliability model for product life data presenting three different failure modes, associated with early, random and wear-out failures. The model is based on theoretical concepts related to competing risk and sectional models. The proposed model is structured based on two Weibull distributions, with two and three parameters, and one exponential distribution. The Weibull distribution with two parameters is aimed at modeling early failure modes; the Weibull distribution with three parameters models wear-out failure modes; the exponential distribution models random failures due to operational use. It is considered that early and wearout failures take place one after the other while random failures occur at the same time as early and wear-out failures as soon as the product starts operating. To measure each period related to the three failure modes, data from warranty and post-warranty periods are used. Warranty data are historical records; post-warranty data are gathered from experts, and are aimed at decreasing the degree of censoring in the data. Once the model is defined, reliability figures and maximum likelihood estimators are derived. Real data obtained from warranty claims on electricelectronic equipments are used to illustrate the developments proposed and a goodness-of-fit test is used to validate the performance of this model.

Study of Corner and Bathtub Attachments with Respect to Static Sizing

This master thesis studied the possibilities of implementing new handbook methodologies for sizing of corner and bathtub attachments with respect to static strength.  Parametric studies of corner and bathtub attachments were performed in order to examine the effect of boundary conditions and vital dimensions with respect to static strength. The parametric studies were performed by solving FE-models of attachments with different dimensions. Variables such as flange thickness, end-plate thickness, end-plate length and total attachment width were varied in order to identify geometric trends for prediction of cross-sectional loads.  The FE-models consisted of a bolt, washer and attachment assembly. The bolt was subjected to pre-tension and contact conditions were applied in between each part. The parametric study examined the cross-sectional loads of critical cross sections of the end-plate, bolt, flanges and back.  The parametric study of the bathtub attachment resulted in verification of critical failure modes from earlier handbook methodology, as well as a foundation for a new handbook methodology for sizing with respect to static strength. The parametric study of the corner attachment resulted in an identification of critical failure modes. The non-symmetric configuration of a corner attachment was found to result in larger load distribution in the bolt shank cross section.

Autonomous vehicles are an important topic in modern day research, both for the private and public sector. One of the reasons why self-driving cars have not yet reached consumer market is because of levels of uncertainty. This is often tackled with multiple sensors of different kinds which helps gaining robust- ness in the vehicle’s system. Radars, lidars and cameras are often the sensors used and the expenses can rise up quickly, which is not always feasible for different markets. This could be addressed with using fewer, but more robust sensors for visualization. This thesis addresses the issue of one particular failure mode for camera sensors, which is reduced view range affected by rainy weather. Kalman filter and discrete wavelet transform with bilateral filtering are evaluated as rain removal algorithms and tested with the state-of-the-art object detection algorithm, You Only Look Once (YOLOv3). Filtered videos in daylight and evening light were tested with YOLOv3 and results show that the accuracy is not improved enough to be worth implementing in autonomous vehicles. With the graphics card available for this thesis YOLOv3 is not fast enough for a vehicle to stop in time when driving in 110km/h and an obstacle appears 80m ahead, however an Nvidia Titan X is assumed to be fast enough. There is potential within the research area and this thesis suggests that other object detection methods are evaluated as future work. / Autonoma fordon är för privat samt offentlig sektor ett viktigt område i modern forskning. Osäkerheten med autonoma fordon är en viktig anledning till varför de idag inte nått konsumentmarknaden. Systemen för autonoma fordon blir mer robusta med inkludering av flera sensorer av olika typer, vilka oftast är kameror, radar och lidars. Fordon med dessa sensorer kan snabbt öka i pris vilket gör dem mindre tillgängliga för olika marknader. Detta skulle kunna lösas med färre sensorer som däremot är mer robusta. Denna avhandling diskuterar problemet med en specific felmodell för kameror, vilket är minskat synfält som påverkas av regnigt väder. Kalman filter och diskret vågkomponent-transformation med bilateral filtrering utvärderades som regnborttagningsalgoritmer och testades med You Only Look Once (YOLOv3), en modern objektigenkänningsmetod. Filtrerade videofilmer i dagstid och kvällstid testades med YOLOv3 och resultaten visade att noggrannheten inte ökade tillräckligt mycket för att vara användbara för autonoma fordon. Med grafikkorten tillgängliga för denna avhandling är inte YOLOv3 snabb nog för ett fordon att hinna stanna i tid före kollision om bilen kör i 110km/h och ett föremål dyker upp 80m framför. Däremot antas det att fordon utrustade med Nvidias Titan X borde hinna stanna i tid före kollision. Avhandlingen ser däremot potential inom detta forskningsområde och föreslår att liknande test fast med andra objektigenkänningsmetoder bör utföras.

The application of carbon reinforced-fiber polymers (CFRP) to structures is a new development that is still under intense research. However, the rehabilitation or retrofit of damage reinforced concrete members by the external bonding of CFRP is becoming increasingly popular in the construction industry. The objective of the tests presented in this thesis is to study different CFRP designs on the reinforced concrete beams and compare their failure modes. The main goal is to determine the CFRP design on the reinforced concrete beams that result in a progressive and gradual failure mode with enough warning before final failure. Different CFRP designs are investigated and compared with theoretical predictions. A retrofitting concept is also employed in this research. The retrofitting concept is the idea of strengthening cracked structures. The strengthening of the beams performed in the lab is carried out under sustained loads and on previously cracking the beams to simulate the realistic case that is usually faced in practice on the field. The RC beams are strengthened in flexure to double their flexural capacity by applying the adequate amounts of CFRP to the tension face of the beams. Due to the CFRP strengthening and increasing the strength capacity of the beams, different CFRP anchorage methods are employed to the beams for additional shear reinforcement to ensure flexural failure. The different CFRP anchorage methods will also be observed for their effectiveness during the debonding and propagation mechanism as well as evaluated for their progressive failure mode.

Effect of Indentation on Sandwich Composite Structure Mechanical Behavior

Composite sandwich structures are prevalent in engineering applications where high strength to weight ratios are critical. A composite sandwich includes the addition of a core material between two composite face sheets to increase ultimate stress in compression and bending loading cases. The performance of many composite sandwich structure configurations is well understood in the undamaged case. This analysis examines a type of damage, low velocity indentation, and determines the effect on mechanical behavior. The scope of the analysis includes manufacturing sandwich composite structures, creating indentation in the composite, and testing the sandwich composite structure. The mechanical behavior of the composite sandwich structures is characterized through ASTM C364 test standard for compressive strength and ASTM C393 standard test standard for flexural properties of sandwich constructions. The experiment is conducted with varied indentation depth, core materials, composite sandwich thickness, and composite face sheet thickness. The findings are compared to control specimens and used to determine the effect of indentation depth and create a relationship for the mechanical performance of indented sandwich composites.

Methods of detecting threats to patient safety in high-risk clinical care can also be employed to analyse child protection processes. This article outlines one tool, known as failure mode and effects analysis, which can be used in a framework that takes into account human factors that can influence an individual’s performance. It discusses how this tool can be used to identify and reduce the potential for failure in the serious case review process, in particular by not attributing blame.

An increase emphasis has been placed on the automotive industry to develop advanced technology vehicles which meet increasing strict government regulations and standards for emissions and fuel economy while maintaining the safety, performance, and consumer appeal of the vehicle. In response to these requirements, hybrid and electric vehicle technologies have become more complex as the necessity for vehicles with an overall better environmental impact. Modern engineers must understand the current methods used to analyze and evaluate risk with the new hybrid technologies to ensure the continued customer satisfaction and safety while meeting new government and agency standards. The primary goal of this work is to maintain consistent definitions, standards, and protocols for risk analysis using design failure modes and effects analysis. Throughout the entire automotive sector there exist standards for risk analysis and methods for analysis, however these models can be difficult to relate to the atmosphere under which educational competitions occur. The motor system case study within this work aims to allow the process for DFMEA to be simple and easily implemented and understood when it is appropriate to start. After defining the model, an electric motor system for hybrid vehicle is analyzed for mechanical and inverter system risks. The end result being a 32% reduction in motor system risk due to recommended actions for mitigating top motor systems risks for future motor system design and implementation, all to meet customer requirements.
