This thesis was focused on evaluate the effect of various permanent grassland exploitation on the biological characteristics and soil properties. Permanent grasslands are composite and varied community of legumes, grasses and many other forbs, which are an important component of agroecosystem. This thesis was carried out in 2013 on experimental grass field trial on Faculty of Agriculture, University of South Bohemia in the ČeskéBudějovice. The experimental variants was evaluated the effect of management by mowing, mulching, leaving fallow.Otherwise were also evaluated height stands,phenophases during harvesting, types of outgrowth, the amount of residual biomass and selected soil properties. The aim of the thesis was to evaluate the effect of different exploitation of grassland herbage on its characteristics and selected soil properties and design of appropriate methods of grassland management. Method of grassland management should be chosen with respect to the exploitationmethodsof permanent grassland. It is very important to take into account the altitude climatic and soil conditions and the type of vegetation.Finally, it must be taken of the used machinery. It was recommended evaluated grassland mowed 2 or 3 times a year along with fertilization by NPK as a suitable form of management.

En este artículo argumentamos que  este  tipo de agricultura  para el caso del Valle del río Apurímac y Ene (VRAE), localizado en la región sur de selva alta peruana, seguía en funcionamiento durante los años del 2001 y 2004. En ese período han ocurrido cambios  en esta modalidad de uso del suelo,  pero éstos han sido realmente menores. Para ilustrar estos cambios, aprovechamos un estudio realizado hace 14 años  utilizándolo como testimonio histórico.  En este trabajo describimos las estrategias productivas de los colonos y su impacto en la deforestación. Nuestro argumento central es que la combinación de estrategias productivas de sobrevivencia de los colonos, algunas basadas en un uso intensivo del suelo, acompañado de cambio tecnológico y otras que recurren a formas de uso muy extensivo del suelo, tienen como objetivo central reducir el riesgo en un contexto donde el cultivo de la coca está rodeado de incertidumbres muy grandes.  Tanto en un caso como en otro, las externalidades e impactos ambientales sobre los bosques son significativas. / This article is dedicated to the coca farmers of the VRAE. It shows that the abundance of «purmas» or secondary forest is due to the overuse of soils where coca is cultivated, the excessive use of modern or agrochemical inputs in these plantations and the traditional or empirical management of the cultivation of cacao and other annual crops. The high correlation between plot size and area in «purmas» is a true reflection of the fallow crisis in the VRAE. This crisis, however, is a result of the unsustainability of the aforementioned agricultural systems. The most important factors of this crisis are, on the one hand, an agricultural intensification of the cultivation of coca that degrades the soil and, on the other hand, an extensive use of the soil without a technological change in the case of legal crops. In both cases, the overall effect is the destruction of forests, deforestation and soil impoverishment.

O semiÃrido brasileiro, por ser um dos mais populosos do mundo, està mais susceptÃvel Ãs atividades antrÃpicas, como o desmatamento para atividades agrosilvopastoris. Esta pesquisa foi desenvolvida no Ãmbito do projeto âEstudos dos processos de degradaÃÃo/desertificaÃÃo e suas relaÃÃes com o uso da terra em sistemas de produÃÃo no semiÃrido cearense: o caso da microrregiÃo de Sobral â CearÃâ. A Ãrea experimental localiza-se no municÃpio de IrauÃuba, inserida em um dos nÃcleos de desertificaÃÃo do semiÃrido brasileiro. O clima da regiÃo à do tipo quente e semiÃrido com chuvas de verÃo (mÃdia anual de 530 mm) e Ãndice de aridez 0,34. O solo à do tipo Planossolo NÃtrico Ãrtico tÃpico, A fraco; e a vegetaÃÃo nativa à do tipo Caatinga arbustiva aberta. A principal atividade econÃmica da regiÃo à a pecuÃria extensiva (bovino e ovino) em sobrepastejo, sem uso de prÃticas conservacionistas. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo comparar os processos hidrossedimentolÃgicos de duas encostas em ambiente semiÃrido: uma (370 mÂ) està submetida à prÃtica de pousio desde 2000; enquanto que a outra (468 mÂ) se encontra degradada, sendo usada como Ãrea de pastagem hà mais de vinte anos. As duas encostas possuem as mesmas condiÃÃes de solo, clima e relevo, diferenciando-se somente quanto ao uso e à cobertura do solo. SÃo comparadas analiticamente variÃveis hidrolÃgicas e sedimentolÃgicas. Os experimentos foram realizados entre 01 de janeiro de 2010 e 15 de abril de 2011. Para promover essa comparaÃÃo foram coletados dados de precipitaÃÃo (lÃmina e intensidade), escoamento superficial e perda de solo. A precipitaÃÃo foi de 264 mm em 2010 e de 445 mm atà 15 de abril de 2011, tendo sido registrados 55 eventos nos 16 meses. As chuvas de IrauÃuba demonstraram alta variabilidade espacial: hà diferenÃa estatÃstica (nÃvel de significÃncia de 5%) entre os dois pluviÃmetros usados na pesquisa, embora estejam a uma distÃncia de apenas 200 m. O padrÃo hidrolÃgico das chuvas na regiÃo à de intermediÃrio a atrasado (70% dos eventos), o que causa maior potencial erosivo. Conclui-se, a partir da anÃlise comparativa, que os dez anos de pousio reduziram em 60% o escoamento superficial em relaÃÃo à encosta degradada. A menor precipitaÃÃo capaz de gerar escoamento superficial foi 7,2 mm na encosta degradada, enquanto que esse valor foi de 8,6 mm para a encosta em pousio. Isso demonstra o incremento de abstraÃÃo inicial da encosta preservada, ou seja, sua maior capacidade de retenÃÃo de umidade. O incremento da capacidade de retenÃÃo se dà atravÃs da interceptaÃÃo vegetal, da serrapilheira e da camada superficial do solo. No entanto, observou-se que a maior precipitaÃÃo incapaz de gerar escoamento superficial foi idÃntica (17 mm) nas duas encostas. A explicaÃÃo para tal resultado à que o parÃmetro dominante nesse processo à a estrutura do solo: embora haja diferenÃas na superfÃcie dos solos, os dez anos de pousio ainda nÃo foram capazes de alterar sua estrutura, conforme avaliou Sousa em pesquisa independente. Observou-se que a taxa de decaimento da vazÃo foi sensivelmente afetada pela prÃtica de pousio: a taxa, de 0,107 min-1 na encosta degrada, decresceu para 0,045 min-1 na encosta preservada. A menor taxa de decaimento de vazÃo na encosta em pousio indica o inÃcio da recuperaÃÃo de seu escoamento de base, o que favorece maior permanÃncia da Ãgua no corpo hÃdrico. Os dez anos de pousio tambÃm foram capazes de reduzir a perda de solo. Essa reduÃÃo, de 83% em relaÃÃo à encosta degradada, induz à melhoria das condiÃÃes fÃsicas, quÃmicas e biolÃgicas do solo, responsÃveis pelo incremento da produÃÃo vegetal. Conclui-se, com base nos experimentos aqui realizados, que os dez anos de pousio melhoraram, de modo mensurÃvel, as condiÃÃes hidrolÃgicas e sedimentolÃgicas na encosta semiÃrida. A prÃtica de pousio, portanto, pode ser adotada para fins de recuperaÃÃo de Ãreas de Caatinga degradada. Sugere-se que sejam realizadas novas investigaÃÃes, que avaliem a associaÃÃo dessa prÃtica a outras, a fim de intensificar o processo de recuperaÃÃo de Ãreas degradadas no semiÃrido

Biomass production and changes in soil water with cover crop species and mixtures following no-till winter wheat

Roozeboom / Replacing fallow with cover crops can provide many benefits, including improved soil quality and reduced nitrogen fertilizer requirements. The addition of cover crops into no-till systems has become popular in recent years as a means of increasing cropping system intensity and diversity. A primary concern of producers in the Great Plains is the possibility that cover crops may reduce the amount of soil water stored in the profile for the next grain crop, potentially reducing yields. Multi-species cover crop mixtures that enhance the ecological stability and resilience of cover crop communities may produce greater and more consistent biomass than single species. Field experiments were established in 2013 and 2014 near Belleville and Manhattan, KS following winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) harvest to evaluate the effect of cover crop species and species complexity on changes in soil profile water content and water use efficiency. Along with a chemical fallow control, ten cover crop treatments were tested: six single species, two-three component mixes, a mix of six species, and a mix of nine species. Volumetric water content was measured using a neutron probe and a Field Scout TDR 300. Similar data were collected in 2014 from an experiment established in 2007 comparing fallow, double-cropped soybean, and four cover crop types (summer and winter legumes and non-legumes) in a no-till winter wheat-grain sorghum-soybean cropping system near Manhattan, KS. Results from both studies showed that grasses produced the most dry matter with the highest water use efficiency (up to 618 kg cm-1). Fallow lost up to 7.9 cm less water than all cover crop treatments throughout cover crop growth and in the fall, but captured up to 3.4 cm less moisture in the spring than the cover crops that added residue to the soil surface. Brassica species extracted water from deeper in the soil profile than the other cover crop species. Species complexity affected water use only relative to the proportions and productivity of their individual components, with no advantage in water use efficiency for the more complex mixtures.
