The Labour Party and family income support policy, 1940-1979 : an examination of the party's interpretation of the relationship between family income support and the labour market

Pratt, Alan January 1988 (has links)
The first two chapters examine the party's policy towards the wage-stop and the poverty trap. Until 1963 the party ignored the wage-stop but from then until 1975 a section of the party campaigned against the regulation expressing moral revulsion and concern about its administration but only rarely opposition to the principle. A Labour government removed the stop when its operation affected only a tiny minority of families. The party was quickly involved in the development of the poverty trap debate being particularly drawn to its disincentive characteristics, but Labour governments, like their Conservative counterparts, soon came to regard the idea as a mere statistical abstraction. After confirming the party's historical ambivalence about Family Allowances the thesis demonstrated that whenever it advocated allowances it did so because it believed the programme would alleviate family poverty rather than augment work incentives. However Labour governments consistently upheld the principle of substitutability, thus conferring de facto support on that less-eligibility dimension of Family Allowances which Macnicol has established informed the coalition government's decision to legislate for the programme in 1945. Despite the party's opposition to Family Income Supplement it became an important element in the Labour government's anti-poverty strategy after the Child Benefits debate in 1976. F.I.S. was criticised because of its contribution to the poverty trap and its potential for assisting in the pauperisation of the low paid, while Child Benefit was supported because it appeared to be a more equitable technique of delivering support to families with dependent children although some in the party were sensitive to the scheme's potential link with improved work incentives. In general, the Labour Party is seen to have failed to develop any coherent and sustained alternative to the ideas and programmes of its political opponents in this critical area of social policy.

Srovnání systémů sociálního zabezpečení a dávek z nich poskytovaných v České republice a ve vybraných státech Evropské unie. / A comparison of social security systems and benefits provided by them in the Czech Republic and in selected European Union countries.

SEDLÁKOVÁ, Gabriela January 2012 (has links)
The theme of my diploma thesis focuses, in a theoretical way, on a description of individual social security systems in chosen countries and on their comparison. When choosing the states I took into account their position in the European Union, or their relationship to the Czech Republic arising from the common history or current relations. The chosen states, whose social security system I compare on account of the system in the Czech Republic, are the Slovak Republic, France, Germany, Austria and the Great Britain. At each state I collected information concerning a general setting of the security system, its historical background and a current status. I described also details of the social security systems in individual states in this issue because of the fact, that an entitlement to benefits in most states is directly related to a participation in the social insurance. A basic legislation is also an integral part of an introduction to each state. For a better clarity of the processed topic I chose three basic target groups, to which the benefits from the social security system are primarily intended. These are families, people with disabilities and persons in social, resp. material need. The aim was to describe the system of benefits, which are for individual target groups provided from the social security system, conditions of the entitlement, eligible persons and the amount of paid benefits. Subsequently there was carried out, in combination with a discussion, a comparison which follows from the very nature of the topic of the diploma thesis. The common characteristic of all mentioned states, namely their affiliation with the European Union, was taken in consideration in the introduction. There I defined a position of the European Union to the social security. Furthermore, there was made a general comparison of individual systems related to a common variable of the social insurance. Then I compared individual benefits for the given target groups. All data in the diploma thesis are updated to January 1st, 2012. In case of the Great Britain and France the data are updated to the legislative change as of April 1st, 2012. I believe that the diploma thesis will be a high-quality source for an assessment of the social security system in the chosen states of the European Union.

Rodina v procesu primárního vzdělávání dítěte / The family in the process of the child's primary education

Cvejnová, Jaroslava January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis entitled "Family in the process of primary education of a child" deals with the issue of the family's influence on a child of younger school age from the perspective of professionals who are in close contact with children, pupils and their parents. These experts are teachers who encounter a diverse range of families during their practice and intensely perceive the impact of the family's influence on the child during his schooling. The first part of the work is focused on the elaboration of the theoretical basis of knowledge about the family, anchored in the literature. The very meaning of the family, its basic functions and their possible disruption are specified here. The typology of the family, its current form and approach to upbringing and education are also outlined. At the same time, basic knowledge about school and education in the Czech Republic was gathered, focusing on primary education and a child of younger school age. The theoretical part also deals with the interaction of two institutions important for society, such as the family and the school. The second part of the work is a research probe, which is based on the methodological procedures of a case study supplemented by semi-structured interviews illustrating individual cases. The expertise and knowledge of the...

Péťa rodič - "socialistické" otcovství v časopise Mladý svět na konci 70. a začátku 80. let 20. století / Petya parent - "socialist" fatherhood in Mladý svět magazine at the end of the 70th and beginning of the 80s of the 20th century

Vlčková, Kateřina January 2014 (has links)
Bc. Kateřina Vlčková ABSTRACT: Petya parent - "socialist" fatherhood in Mladý svět magazine at the end of the 70th and beginning of the 80s of the 20th century The topic of my thesis is fatherhood in socialist Czechoslovakia in the late 70s and 80s of the 20th century. My primary source research is a section Péťa Parent, published from 1979 to 1982 in the Mladý svět magazine. The uniqueness of this column, I see in the fact that the author (Petr Hora-Hořejš) as the father advise to "public" readers regarding about education and child care. The theoretical part will focus on the concepts that are relevant to my research, such as the gender culture, fatherhood, masculinity, private and public sphere, motherhood, femininity, etc. Among the basic questions I'll ask include the following: How "socialist" father defends and publishes his paternal role, how he views care and education (his) child or what image of man-father Mladý svět magazine helps to create. With my work I try to contribute to a greater awareness of the history of fatherhood changes and involvement father in a family area, which was at that time primarily attributed to the women-mothers.

A therapeutic programme for parents of youth offenders

Nieman, Annelien 11 1900 (has links)
This study highlighted the distinction between retributive and restorative justice. Diversion and the Journey as a diversion option for youth in South Africa was discussed. Literature indicated that certain family aspects such as family cohesiveness, communication, discipline, and conflict in the home could lead to youth offending. Interviews, focus groups, and questionnaires were used to determine possible problematic family interactions as well as parents' needs of a parent programme. It was found that parents experience feelings like anger, disappointment, shock, helplessness, frustration, and humiliation regarding the child's crime. It was established that dealing with parents' feelings, communication, discipline, conflict resolution, and problem solving should be included in the parent programme. An evaluation of the programme was done and the following aspects showed improvement: communication, mother's involvement with the child, understanding and support in the family, youth's independence, affection, family relations, problem solving and the amount of time spent with family. / Psychology of Education / M.
