Relationship of Family Counseling Commitment to Child Self-Concept and Parent Attitude

Stockdale, J. Steven 08 1900 (has links)
The objective of this study was to investigate the conditions under which family counseling was terminated and the relationship of the type of termination to children's self-concepts and parents' attitudes. For the purposes of this study, family counseling was terminated by either mutual termination or by family termination. Mutual termination referred to the family and the counselor mutually agreeing that termination from counseling was appropriate. Family termination referred to the family deciding without counselor agreement that termination from counseling was appropriate. For the purposes of this study a family's degree of commitment to the counseling process was indicated by the type of termination the families chose, that is, mutual or family termination.

Recommendations for "weaving a circle of care" for families affected by HIV/AIDS in a specific south rand community

Louw, Nadia Marie 09 June 2008 (has links)
M.Ed. / Over the past decade, the HIV/AIDS pandemic has had a devastating effect on many communities and families in South Africa. Many families have already lost, and many more will lose, primary caregivers to the disease. This could have a serious impact on the living conditions and emotional wellbeing of families, and especially of children and adolescents. As an intern educational psychologist working in the Eldorado Park community, the researcher became aware of the difficulties and needs experienced by families that are affected by HIV/AIDS. This study therefore aims to identify the needs of families affected by HIV/AIDS, in order to assist the educational psychologist by making recommendations for weaving a circle of care to support them, within an asset-based approach. To accomplish this, the study utilised a participatory research approach within a critical theoretical paradigm and case study design. Purposeful selection was employed and as the study is concerned with HIV/AIDS which requires the utmost confidentiality, the families were identified with the help of home-based care workers. The researcher interviewed three families and eight home-based care workers in the Eldorado Park community. Detailed data analysis and interpretation of the needs highlighted during these interviews revealed a number of common themes, which are indicative of the needs of families affected by HIV/AIDS in the Eldorado Park area. These families expressed a need for awareness, love and understanding from their communities. They also wish to have greater understanding and support from schools, as well as expressing the need for opportunities to share their experiences and raise community awareness by speaking at schools and churches, and through support groups. Families furthermore require assistance with the great economic difficulties they face, largely due to illness and unemployment. A need to gain greater access to medical care, social grants and burial societies, was expressed. Difficulties with transport and documentation seemed to create a major barrier in this regard. The need for psychological and spiritual counselling as well as legal advice was highlighted. The study provides recommendations and a practical asset map to assist the educational psychologist in weaving a circle of care for families affected by HIV/AIDS. / Mrs. Helen Krige Dr. Elzette Fritz

'n Postmoderne, pastoraal-narratiewe perspekief op seksueel-verwante gesinsgeheime (Afrikaans)

Gouws, Johan Cornelius 22 August 2005 (has links)
English: This dissertation attempts to relate something on sexual-related secrets from a postmodern, pastoral-narrative perspective. In chapter one the focus is on an explanation of the manner in which the research is done. By using the ABDCE-formula of an author of fiction, a space is created in which narrative-based research could be done. The research develops through action stories, background concepts, further development, climax and the end. Action stories concerning secrets characterize chapter two. The story of Tim, as well as stories and conversations from Internet discussion lists and stories from the media with the accent on current chat shows are shared. Chapter three supplies a background of certain perspectives on aspects like language games, paralogy, deconstruction, postmodernism, social constructionism and narrative therapy. Meanings guiding our actions and certain questions which gives life to our practical thoughts, are highlighted. Chapter four provides a thick description of human sexuality. Stories and perspectives on sexuality, externalization, sexual myths in the community as well as a description of sexuality from ethical, Biblical, post-Biblical, systemic and postmodern views are given. Chapter five gives a thick description of the family and shows that the entire family, the larger family as well as the community could be involved in secrecy. Perspectives from the Old and New Testament are shared and a warning against idolisation of the ideal family is made. Covenant, creation, salvation and pneumatology are identified as a Biblical approach to family life. The modern family, its characteristics and the so-called "second family" are under discussion. The stories of King David's as well as Isaac's families bring deliverance of the paralysing effect that the past with its mistakes might have on family life in its present form. Attention is focused on a perspective on sexual-related secrets in chapter six. The secret sexual world of the adolescent is investigated and special attention is paid to secret themes which might occur. Intensive attention is also paid to the position of the therapist regarding secrecy in therapeutic sessions. Chapter seven gives a summarized critical reflection on the research. This includes my conclusions from own experience gained in the process. / Thesis (PhD (Practical Theology))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Practical Theology / unrestricted
