BICULTURALISM, FAMILISM, AND PARENTING STYLES OF HAITIAN PARENTS WITH JUVENILE YOUTH: IMPACT OF A FAMILY-BASED INTERVENTION

Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this randomized experimental design was to determine the impact of a culturally adapted family-based intervention program on parenting styles. A secondary purpose was to determine the impact of cultural factors, biculturalism and familism, on the parenting styles of parents who participated in the family intervention, as compared to those who did not participate in the intervention. The sample consisted mostly of Haitian parents whose youth, ages 13-17, were involved in the juvenile justice system in South Florida. Twenty-one parents were randomly assigned to the intervention group (n = 15) and comparison group, or standard of care (n = 6). This study was a substudy of a larger scale study that was conducted at a major university in South Florida. Participants in the family-based intervention group received an evidence-based intervention that was adapted to their cultural needs and language preferences. The intervention lasted between 3-4 months. Participants in the comparison group were those in the standard of care, or treatment as usual group, who were referred to community-based organizations for counseling services. A pretest-posttest design was used to examine the effects of the culturally adapted intervention on parenting styles and familism. Parenting styles were measured using the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ, Robinson et al., 1995) and familism was measured using the Attitudinal Familism Scale (Lugo Steidel & Contreras, 2003). T-test analyses were used to determine statistical significance of the variables and gain scores were calculated for the intervention group and comparison group. Pearson’s r correlation coefficient was also used to explore any significant relationships between the dependent variables, parenting styles and familism, and parenting styles and biculturalism. Biculturalism was measured using the Bicultural Involvement Questionnaire (Szapocznik et al., 1980). / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (PhD)--Florida Atlantic University, 2021. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Siblings of Autistic Children: a Supportive Intervention Program Assessing Self-Report and Parent Measures of Coping

Pope, Judith Auricchio 12 1900 (has links)
This research project was designed to demonstrate the usefulness of a supportive intervention program for 17 nine to 14 year old siblings of autistic children. Current clinical practice has begun most recently to include the siblings of handicapped children in treatment services as a preventive measure to help maximize families' coping abilities and to increase the chances that they will be strengthened by their unique circumstances. Although research evidence suggests that most siblings are not at risk for serious psychopathology, it seems reasonable to assume that few remain unaffected by living with a handicapped brother or sister. Siblings report that they have increased responsibilities, many unanswered questions, and parents who typically are caught up in the stresses of caring for a handicapped child and have limited time to attend to their needs. It was hypothesized that an intervention program providing information about the handicapping condition, autism, and offering support through participation in a discussion group with other siblings of autistic children would effect improved coping in the participants. Three time-limited interventions (information plus support, information plus activity, and activity control) were compared under controlled conditions. Sibling coping was measured by a) a battery of self-report and parent ratings of behavior and attitudes, b) clinical observations, and c) sibling and parent anecdotal accounts. Descriptive behavioral and attitudinal data on the total sibling sample indicated more deviant individual profiles than would be expected in the normal population. Consistent with previous research and clinical practice with this subject population, children who were identified with problems were those generally thought to be at greatest risk such as older female and younger male siblings who have assumed extensive caretaking responsibilities for the autistic child. Specific group changes following intervention were confounded by individual subject reactions to the various procedures. Qualitative aspects of the siblings' participation were discussed in terms of implications for future clinical intervention and research with this sibling population.

Ringeborn, Pia January 2022 (has links)
Professionals in family counseling and licensed psychotherapist are subject to variouslegislation regarding record keeping. Licensed psychotherapists who work in municipalfamily counselling services must discern between psychotherapy and other client-relatedactivities. The purpose of this study was to examine how licensed psychotherapists working inmunicipal family counselling services are able to discern between psychotherapy and familycounselling as a method for determining whether or not to keep client records. Responseswere requested for the following questions: How do licensed psychotherapists working asfamily counsellors discern between psychotherapy and family counselling? Do licensedpsychotherapists conduct psychotherapy as part of their family counselling services? Dolicensed psychotherapists working in municipal family counselling services keep records oftheir sessions? The method of the study was qualitative. The sample consisted of eightlicensed psychotherapists working in family counselling services. Through the use of semistructured interviews, psychotherapists provided definitions of family counselling andpsychotherapy, and they described the differences between them. They also responded toquestions about whether they conducted psychotherapy in their work at municipal familycounselling services and whether they kept client records of the work they did at familycounselling services. The collected material was divided into two sections – quantitative andqualitative. The qualitative section was analysed based on the topic. Results of the studyindicated that licensed psychotherapists were able to describe the differences betweenpsychotherapy and family counselling, and they clearly distinguished between psychotherapyand family counselling. Professionals who conduct psychotherapy do not keep client records. The study's conclusions are as follows, there is ambiguity in legislation and regulations thatapply to the work within the municipal family counseling.

Modification of the Record-Keeping System of a Community Mental Health Agency

Knight, Karen, Neilsen, Christine, Schreiter, Craig 01 January 1979 (has links)
In recent years the social service field has incorporated program evaluation. In this time of accountability, funding sources want to to know what they are buying. As they respond to this requirement, agencies often discover that they have been living with archaic record-keeping systems. Systems which are cumbersome, or do not collect needed information have become the focus for change. The context overview includes, first, information about the agency, Salem Area Family Counseling Service (SAFCS), second, about the catchment area from which it draws clients, and third, about the people it serves. The time perspective from which this is written is November, 1977, when the project began.

Aktivitetsbalans för par : En intervjustudie med familjerådgivare / Occupational balance for couples: an interview study with  family counselers

Haskovec Aronsson, Camilla, Löwenham, Martina January 2023 (has links)
Title: Occupational balance for couples: an interview study with family counselers Introduction: Occupational balance is a concept in occupational therapy, meaningyou have an even distribution between what you want to do and what you need to do. Percepções e condutas maternas quanto à alimentação de crianças com múltiplas deficiências e problemas alimentares / Maternal perceptions and behaviors regarding the alimentation of children with multiple disabilities and eating problems

No. of bitstreams: 1 Rafael Lacerda Botelho.pdf: 1769956 bytes, checksum: d643ee0eecd5c53f41bfa877e7a147f5 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-21 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / Introduction: Multiple disabilities are a serious clinical condition, since there is a sum of different alterations affecting the subject’s development. In cases of physical deficiency composing the pathological multiplicity, alimentation represents one of the most disturbed aspects, besides language itself and even cognition. Studies of the eating scene in these cases are still limited, and those orientated to the maternal side of the scene, are even more restricted. Studies of this type are justified because they bring to the discussion subjective content, which can clarify certain maternal behaviors, making clinical decisions more effective, especially those that refer to family consulting. Objective: To identify maternal behaviors and perceptions in feeding scenes with their children with Multiple Disabilities. Method: we used the Discourse of the Collective Subject technique, a methodology that consisted of the elaboration of a synthesis discourse, based on the statements of a group of ten mothers, in clinical interviews, on the development of the feeding of their children, with multiple deficiency, especially with alterations in the motor aspect, which in almost all cases, determined the insertion of alternative feeding or food retention in the pasty texture. Results: the mothers report desire and pleasure in breastfeeding, as well as the impact of abrupt weaning due to the early hospitalization of their children; they also report how the serious clinical picture that presents itself is for the dismantling of the eating scene and the consequent absence of these subjects in the scenes of the familiar meals, privileged space of interaction. Finally, they report their attempts to rescue opportunities for interaction even in disturbed food scenes. Conclusion: the study of the maternal attitudes and feelings towards eating scenes provides important data that should guide any clinical project of family counseling in the case of subjects with disabilities / Introdução: A deficiência múltipla é um quadro clínico grave, porque há a somatória de diferentes alterações incidindo no desenvolvimento do sujeito.

The rights of the young person in the New Zealand youth justice family group conference

Lynch, Nessa, n/a January 2009 (has links)
The youth justice family group conference (FGC) is a statutory decision making process whereby the young person, their family/whanau, state officials and the victim of the offence come together to decide on a response to offending by that young person. The FGC is an integral part of the youth justice system, involving thousands of young people and their families each year. There is a considerable amount of literature available on the youth justice FGC, most notably in regard to the purported restorative justice nature of the process. However, for a legal process which involves so many young people on a daily basis, there is little information available on the due process rights of young people in the FGC. This thesis seeks to remedy this gap in the research knowledge. Firstly, this thesis establishes the theoretical framework for the rights of the young person in the youth justice system. The historical context and theoretical justification for these rights is considered, and the benchmarks for rights coming from international and national human rights standards are identified. A key theoretical issue is the application of rights to the FGC. It is argued that although the FGC differs in format from the adversarial criminal process, it remains a state process involved in resolving a breach of the criminal law, and thus the young person's rights should be safeguarded. Secondly, this thesis evaluates legislation, policy and practice relating to the rights of the young person in the FGC. Three key areas of rights are considered: legal assistance, how the offence is proved, and outcomes of the FGC. Reference is made to practice examples derived from observation of the FGC in two centres in New Zealand. Finally, as the FGC is certain to remain an integral part of the youth justice system, recommendations are made as to how legislation and practice could be improved to better safeguard the rights of young people in this process.
