ENHANCING GAS PHASE FISCHER-TROPSCH SYNTHESIS CATALYST DESIGN

Dasgupta, Debalina 01 January 2008 (has links)
This dissertation research resulted in the development of a Fe based catalyst with Co as a co catalyst, and Ru and ZnO as promoters. The role of Cu and K as promoters and the effect of SiO2 as an alternate support to gamma- Al2O3 were also investigated. A series of Fe-based catalysts for Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis were prepared. The different promoters were incorporated into the catalyst by impregnation The catalysts were characterized by several methods. The catalytic performance of these materials for F-T synthesis were investigated in a newly designed fixed bed reactor system in the gas phase. It should be noted that the three phase slurry bubble reactors systems are commercially preferred. The reaction conditions were varied for benchmarking the Fe-Zn-K/ gamma- Al2O3 catalyst and for the bimetallic Fe-Co-Zn/ gamma- Al2O3 catalyst and to identify optimal process parameters for further catalyst designs. The H2:CO ratio used in this study was 2. The newly designed catalysts showed significantly high activity towards CO conversion (>70 %), along with low selectivity towards CO2 (5 -15 %) and methane (ND - 3 %). The data show that varying the process conditions, it is possible to achieve narrow distribution of the liquid products. The results employing Fe-Zn-K catalysts showed that an increase in pressure increased the mean carbon chain length. In contrast, an increase in temperature resulted in a decline in the average carbon chain length. Increasing the feed flow rate, or in other words decreasing the residence time of the reactants and the intermediates, resulted in a decrease in the average carbon number in the product hydrocarbons. The evaluation of the effect of process conditions on the performance of Fe-Co-Zn catalysts revealed that the effect of pressure on the carbon chain length was reversed. Increasing the pressure from 250 to 350 psig decreased the carbon chain length. The increase in temperature, however, resulted in a decrease in the carbon chain length as observed in the Fe-Zn-K catalysts. Fe catalysts groups containing different proportions of Co were prepared. It was determined that an Fe:Co ratio of 4:1 is sufficient to obtain high CO conversions with a high selectivity towards liquid hydrocarbons. The hydrocarbon distribution on the other hand remained almost unchanged due to a change in the Co content. The use of silica, as opposed to alumina as the catalyst support, enhanced the CO conversion and the selectivity of the process towards liquid hydrocarbons. The methane and CO2 selectivities on both the supports remained unchanged. However, a significant difference in the liquid hydrocarbon distribution was observed. Addition of K to the catalyst resulted in a change in the liquid hydrocarbon distribution in that a slight increase in the heavier hydrocarbons was observed. A series of Fe4Co1Zn0.04 based catalysts for Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis, in which the different amounts of Ru are incorporated by the impregnation were also studied. The results showed the incorporation of Ru suppressed the CH4 formation at the cost of increasing the CO2 selectivity.

Synthesis and Characterization of Magnetic Nanoparticles with High Magnetization and Good Oxidation Resistibility

Yu, Shi, Chow, Gan-Moog 01 1900 (has links)
Magnetic nanoparticles attract increasing attention because of their current and potential biomedical applications, such as, magnetically targeted and controlled drug delivery, magnetic hyperthermia and magnetic extraction. Increased magnetization can lead to improved performance in targeting and retention in drug delivery and a higher efficiency in biomaterials extraction. We reported an approach to synthesize iron contained magnetic nanoparticles with high magnetization and good oxidation resistibility by pyrolysis of iron pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO)[subscript 5]) in methane (CH[subscript 4]). Using the high reactivity of Fe nanoparticles, decomposition of CH[subscript 4] on the Fe nanoparticles leads to the formation of nanocrystalline iron carbides at a temperature below 260°C. Structural investigation indicated that the as-synthesized nanoparticles contained crystalline bcc Fe, iron carbides and spinel iron oxide. The Mössbauer and DSC results testified that the as-synthesized nanoparticle contained three crystalline iron carbide phases, which converted to Fe[subscript 3]C after a heat treatment. Surface analysis suggested that the as-synthesized and subsequently heated iron-iron carbide particles were coated by iron oxide, which originated from oxidization of surface Fe atoms. The heat-treated nanoparticles exhibited a magnetization of 160 emu/g, which is two times of that of currently used spinel iron oxide nanoparticles. After heating in an acidic solution with a pH value of 5 at 60°C for 20 h, the nanoparticles retained 90 percentage of the magnetization. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

Gedehnte epitaktische Fe-Co-X-Schichten (X = B, C, N) mit erhöhter magnetischer Anisotropie / Strained epitaxial Fe-Co-X films (X = B, C, N) with enhanced magnetic anisotropy

Reichel, Ludwig 16 February 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Theoretical calculations predict a high magnetocrystalline anisotropy for tetragonally strained Fe-Co, which would be beneficial for rare-earth free permanent magnet materials. In this experimental work, epitaxial Fe-Co films are investigated structurally and magnetically. AuxCu100-x buffer layers are very suitable to study the strain in these films since their in-plane lattice parameter can be tailored via the applied stoichiometry (x). However, when Fe-Co is deposited on such a buffer layer, the induced strain of the Fe-Co lattice relaxes completely within the first monolayers, due to its high elastic energy. In ternary Fe-Co-X films, where small atoms X like B, C or N occupy octahedral interstitial sites, a spontaneous strain c/a up to 1.05 is observed. A uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy along the strained c axis appears. Their maximum anisotropy constant is 0.4 MJ/m³ for B or C contents of 2 at%. If the X content is further increased, the crystallinity and thus, the magnetic anisotropy of the films degrade. Together with the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the films’ volumes, a high interface anisotropy is observed for the Fe-Co(-X) films. The contribution of the free surface clearly exceeds the contribution of the Au-Cu interface.

Efeitos da adição de surfactante e moagem de alta velocidade  em pós magnéticos à base de Pr-Fe-B obtidos via HDDR / Effects of surfactant addition and high-speed ball milling on magnetic powders based on Pr-Fe-B obtained by HDDR

Santos, Patricia Brissi 27 October 2011 (has links)
This work verified the effect caused by adding the surfactant in the high speed/energy milling in order to obtain Pr12Fe65.9Co16B6Nb0.1 magnetic nanopowders. The first part of this work involved the magnetic powder obtainment through the process of hydrogenation, disproportionation, desorption and recombination (HDDR). The pressure of H2 during the hydrogenation and disproportion steps was 930 mbar and the temperature of desorption and recombination was 840 ºC. Initially, the HDDR powders were subjected a highspeed milling process at 900 rpm, with quantity variations of the milling medium (cyclohexane) and without the addition of oleic acid. Then, the HDDR powders were subjected to the milling process with the addition of oleic acid and with milling time variations. After the milling process, heat treatments of the powder were carried out at 700 °C or 800 °C for 30 minutes in order to obtain the crystallization of the powder. By performing the procedures, it was verified that the milling efficiency improved with the addition of 6.6 ml of cyclohexane as the milling medium and with the addition of oleic acid. It was determined that for the surfactant additions of 0.02 ml to 0.05 ml, with a milling time of up to 360 minutes, powder agglomeration does not occur in the milling pot and the milling efficiency is higher than 90%. The second stage of this work involved the magnetic powders characterization obtained by using vibrating sample magnetometer, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Through the characterizations it was found that the powders magnetic properties improved when the addition of oleic acid in a high-speed /energy milling occurred. It was also verified that the α-Fe phase, present in the powder, shows a crystallite size decrease (from 35 nm to ~ 10 nm) when the time milling variation occurred; meanwhile, the crystallinity degree was lower in the Pr2Fe14B phase when the time milling variations was carried out.

Photomagnetic Cobalt hexacyanidoferrate(III) Prussian Blue Analogues probed by X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) / Photomagnétisme d'hexacyanidoferrate(III) de cobalt, analogues de bleu de Prusse, sondé par dichroïsme magnétique circulaire des rayons X (XMCD)

Fatima, Sadaf 28 September 2016 (has links)
The Fe/Co Prussian Blue Analogues (PBA) are molecular complexes that exhibit externally controlled bistable physical properties. Thus, they are considered as potential candidates for photoswitchable molecule-based information storage. This thesis aims to investigate the electronic and magnetic structure of Fe/Co PBA using advanced experimental and theoretical techniques. X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) techniques combined with Ligand Field Multiplet (LFM) theory probe the change in the macroscopic magnetic properties of PBA and can give local information about the metal centers existing in the complexes. The XAS and XMCD spectra at Fe and Co L2,3 edges are simulated using Ligand Field Multiplet (LFM) Calculations. The tridimensional RbCoFe PBA, two photomagnetic dinculear complexes and the building blocks Fe-bearing precursors are investigated. The XMCD study combined with LFM investigation revealed a large value of orbital magnetic moment in FeTp precursor of the dinuclear complex. A detailed study has been performed to check for the orbit and spin sum rules in the case of low spin FeIII ions and it was found that the spin sum rule does not hold because of intermixing between L2 and L3 edges. The XMCD investigation of the photomagnetic dinuclear complexes confirmed the metal-to-metal electron transfer. This XMCD investigation of the smallest unit of Fe/Co PBA family is helpful to understand the magnetic properties of the family of Fe/Co PBA. The XMCD study at Fe and Co K edges of a tridimensional RbCoFe PBA proved the existence of an antiferromagnetic interaction between Fe and Co metal ions in the photoinduced state.

Nouveaux alliages Fe-Co magnétiques pour l’aéronautique, à microstructure partiellement recristallisée et à texture fortement orientée / New magnetic Fe-Co alloys, having a partially recrystallized microstructure and strongly oriented texture, for aeronautic applications

Nabi, Brahim 27 January 2014 (has links)
Magnetic and mechanical properties of Fe-49%Co-2%V and Fe-27%Co alloys, used in electric generators and transformers of the aircraft, have been investigated as a function of heat treatments. As regards to Fe-49%Co-2%V alloy, experimental results have shown that the magnetic and mechanical properties depend on the boundary spacing, which separate the microstructure crystallites, whatever the recrystallized fraction. The coercivity depends linearly on the inverse of the boundary spacing and the yield strength follows a modified Hall Petch relationship by taking into account the sub-grain size. Moreover, a linear relationship between the frictional stress and the long range order degree measured by neutron diffraction has been established. Finally, based on the experiment, a square polynomial degree relationship between the magnetic losses and the yield stress has been proposed. As respect to the Fe-27%Co alloy, the evolution of the {011}<100> Goss component during the manufacturing process has been investigated. This sought component is favorable for the magnetic properties of the sheet. It has been found that the origin of this texture is related to its development by shearing during hot rolling. Moreover, the development of the {111}<112> cold deformation texture was studied. It has been established by coupling EBSD analysis and simulation based on VPSC model that the {110}<111> system is the predominant active slip system during the plastic deformation. During the deformation, the Goss and the rotated Cube ({001}<110>) components, rotate of 35° and 55° respectively with regard to the transverse direction. That happens in order to place the active slip plane {110} in the favorable position for gliding to develop the {111}<112> component.

Synthesis and characterization of dinuclear {Fe(μ-CN)Co} complexes exhibiting metal-to-metal electron transfer properties / Synthèse et caractérisation de complexes binucléaires de type {Fe(μ-CN)Co} présentant des propriétés de transfert d'électron intermétalliques

Koumousi, Evangelia S. 04 December 2015 (has links)
Enfin le chapitre IV porte sur la possibilité de transférer le phénomène de transfert d'électron des paires Fe/Co étudiées de l'état solide à la solution / This thesis is dedicated to the synthesis of new dinuclear cyanido-bridged Co/Fe complexes, which mimics on a single molecule the original properties of the coordination network of Prussian Blue Analogues AxCo[Fe(CN)6]y•nH2O (A= alkaline ions), i.e. intramolecular thermal and photo-induced electron transfer in the solid state. We focus on the study of the physical properties of the simplest Fe/Co PBA, a dinuclear complex, with the hope to understand the fundamental concepts of this fascinating phenomenon. Chapter I contains the most representative examples of Fe/Co PBAs, focusing on the synthetic strategies employed in order to obtain Fe/Co PBAs of different dimensionalities and the techniques used to understand their photomagnetic properties. The theoretical background of the electron transfer phenomenon and the motivation of our work are described in the end of the chapter. After introducing the choice of the building blocks used in this work through the study of their redox potential properties, chapter II is devoted to the synthesis and the characterization of a novel dinuclear Fe/Co cyanido-bridged complex, which exhibits metal-to-metal electron transfer properties in solid state triggered by temperature and light. The ET phenomenon has been also studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and dielectric measurements. In Chapter III is illustrated the influence of the environment content of the dinuclear Fe/Co complexes, such as the counter ions, on the occurrence of the thermally and/or photo-induced electron transfer in solid state, thus highlighting the versatility of these molecular materials. Finally in chapter IV, the possibility of transferring the electron transfer phenomenon of the studied Fe/Co pairs from solid state to solution is investigated.
