Modelling and simulation of a gas turbine

Klang, Henrik, Lindholm, Andreas January 2005 (has links)
In this thesis, a gas turbine simulator for the Siemens GT10C was developed and implemented. It concerns everything from the theory behind the simulator; both the hard- ware and software involved, to how the actual simulator was built using these tools. The theory concerns itself with basic automatic control concepts, as well as basic turbine theory. The simulator setup is being discussed concerning both technical and eco- nomic issues. A robust hardware solution is then selected, using the basic re- quirements, which the simulator then is built around. The tools used are the Siemens SIMATIC automatic control system and the Siemens SIMIT real-time simulator using a SIMBA Pro PCI card to interface with the PLC:s in the SIMATIC system. Matlab are also used to a lesser extent to build the simulator behavior in SIMIT. In the end, a fully featured simulator is presented that can be used for various purposes such as training operators, trying out new concepts and testing the automatic control system used to control the turbine. Further development that could be done, by other engineers, in the future, is also discussed.

Abstract: Intelligent systems, based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) have been studied as alternative solutions for ill-defined plants or nonlinear and transient systems, due to the worldwide market requirements for high standard products and safe and environmentally friendly processes. In this work, the algebraic equations of a neural model were implemented in a Microsoft Excel worksheet. This ANN was previously trained with Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, using the ANN toolbox of MATLAB and the optimized weights and biases were inserted in the worksheet as well. By means of a digital Fieldbus network architecture, configured by Syscon Software, the data acquisition and process control were performed. The Indusoft Web Studio was employed as supervisory software and the communication between these two softwares was achieved through Ole for Process Control protocol. Since the data acquisition system is supposed to update the ANN input variables in the worksheet, information is exported from Indusoft to Excel through Open Data Base Connectivity system, which was properly configured. The onestep-ahead controlled variable is automatically predicted every sample time and then used in the objective function of the Excel Solver (quadratic error minimization), implemented via Visual Basic programming. Restrictions were added to the quasi-Newton optimization method so that a smooth solution could be found inside a suitable range of the manipulated variable. As a case-study, this alternative system was implemented to control the temperature of a bromelain precipitation tank. The bromelain recovery from pineapple juice was carried out in a fed-batch stirred tank, using precipitation with ethanol at low temperature to avoid protein denaturation. The coolant (propylene glycol) flow rate was manipulated through a variable speed pump. Experimental data (75% of the database from open-loop tests) was used to train a multi-layered feed forward ANN. The ANN input layer variables, updated every 4 seconds, were chosen as follows: ethanol temperature, bulk temperature (controlled variable), coolant inlet temperature and coolant outlet temperature, liquid volume, pump flow rate (manipulated variable) and pump flow rate variation. In the hidden layer a hyperbolic tangent function was applied to 14 neurons. The output variable was the one-step-ahead bulk temperature, using the linear activation function. Offline tests with unseen data proved that the ANN successfully predicted the tank temperature, as the linear fitting slope coefficient of the dispersion plots (network output versus target vector) was close to the unity and the interception coefficient was around zero. The alternative controller was implemented and experimental results showed its effectiveness in maintaining the bulk temperature around the set-point (5°C). From the present results it was clearly shown that this methodology is a promising new way to face complex process control problems and the tendency is to increase their range of applicability in industrial processes. / Mestrado / Sistemas de Processos Quimicos e Informatica / Mestre em Engenharia Química

The design of a software architectural framework for tunnelling metering protocols over TCP/IP and low bandwidth packet switched networks with support for proprietary addressing

Von Gordon, Albert Fredrich Johannes 25 October 2007 (has links)
This document discusses the concept of drivers implemented within the context of the REMPLI (Real-Time Energy Management over Power line and Internet, see section 1.8.) network. The process image approach and the tunnelling approach are presented and reasoning is given why the tunnelling approach is preferred. Each of the drivers implemented is associated with a specific metering protocol. This document further discusses the general architecture of such a driver structure. The generic software architecture serves as a framework for integrating serial communication based metering protocols over packet-orientated remote networks and meters, by tunnelling the protocol data units to the remote meters. Principally each Protocol Driver consists of three parts, one part situated at the Application Server, one at the Access Point and one at the Node. This document then gives a description of the general driver structure within the REMPLI network and briefly explains the functions of all the modules contained within the driver structure. An example is used to show how these modules, which make up the software architecture of the Protocol Driver, are used to send an application generated request from the Application Server to the Metering Equipment and sending the response back from the remote Metering Equipment to the Application Server. This dissertation further discusses the need for address translation within the REMPLI network and the need to restrict access to meters by using these addresses and an access control list. This document also discusses the need for a “Keep-alive” signalling scheme, if supported by the underlying protocol and gives a general concept as to how it should be implemented. The role of an Optimization Module is also discussed for low bandwidth networks by means of an M-Bus example. Finally the M-Bus protocol driver implementation is discussed. The results achieved are presented, showing that the driver architecture can successfully be used to tunnel the M-Bus protocol to remote meters, provided the underlying network conforms to the quality of service requirements determined by the implemented metering protocol. The work proposed in this document started off as part of the REMPLI project by the REMPLI team but was completed independently. / Dissertation (MEng (Computer Engineering))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering / unrestricted

Control Network Performance Engineering / Control Network Performance Engineering - Quality oriented Design of CSMA-based Networks in Automation / Qualitätsorientierter Entwurf von CSMA-Netzwerken der Automation

Plönnigs, Jörn 11 September 2007 (has links) (PDF)
20, 01277 Dresden, Internet: http://www.vogtverlag.de/, email: info@vogtverlag.de, ISBN 978-3-938860-10-6) / During the design of large automation networks, performance analysis methods can be used for testing and dimensioning the network before implementation and are essential for an efficient and reliable design process. However, setting up the necessary analytical or simulative models is time-consuming, requires in-depth knowledge, and is therefore often not applicable in practice. The network designers are much more used to the design tools used to develop automation networks. Based on these tools' databases various methods for automated system and traffic modeling, performance analysis and diagnoses are combined in the control network performance engineering that seamlessly integrates quality analysis and consulting into network design without requiring additional effort. Marcoň, Petr January 2009 (has links)
This thesis describes the possibilities of local and remote sensors configuration. Summary overview of the most common Fieldbus and protocols for remote configuration is performed. The focus is mainly dedicated to the HART protocol that is analyzed from the physical layer to the application layer. Circuit diagram and printed circuit board (PCB) of smart sensor with thermistor probe Pt1000 was designed. The HART protocol allows the smart sensor parameters setting as well. The functionality of remote configuration was tested in HARTWinConf program. The control elements for local sensor configuration, such as buttons, matrix keyboards and touchscreens, are described in the following chapter. Representation of the measurement values on display module is introduced too. The most important parameters and aspect of character LCD, graphics LCD and OLED displays are described in greater details. The DD12864YO-3A OLED display was selected to use with designed temperature smart sensor module. The display shows the loop current, the percentage of current range and the primary value - temperature. As the last step the EMI and EMS tests for all modules were performed.
