The audience as character in Beaumont and Fletcher plays

The thesis studies the relationship of playwright, actor and audience in Beaumont and Fletcher plays from the period 1607 -c. 1625. The major concern of the thesis is with the involvement of the audience in the dramatic action or emotional pattern of the plays. In order to discuss this audience participation which is suggested as the primary focus of the dramaturgy of Beaumont and Fletcher, the thesis first attempts to establish the most usual audience of the plays. The private audience of the Second Blackfriars Playhouse is described as typical of the wealthy, often aristocratic audience for whom Beaumont and Fletcher wrote and whose taste both.determined many of the characteristics of Fletcherian plays and was itself influenced by those plays. As a result of this relationship between Beaumont and Fletcher and their spectators, it is suggested that the playwrights had a significant role to play in the evolution of the English drama from the Elizabethan theatre to the Restoration theatre. In fact, the sort of theatre which the Caroline theatregoers of 1625 were demanding of Fletcher was precisely the style of "heroic", romantic theatre which he had taught them to appreciate with Philaster in 1610. Philaster is seen as the play in which the earlier, unsuccessful attempts by each playwright merged, in collaboration, into a formula for popular success and an approach to the theatre which was totally histrionic. [footnote omitted] Assuming this audience and its tastes, fashions and behaviour patterns, the thesis investigates Beaumont and Fletcher's satire of the audience, suggesting that Fletcherian satire was directed not at individuals, but at groups in Jacobean society, most of which they could assume to be present in the playhouse. Beaumont and Fletcher were able, again through a thorough understanding of their audience, to work the various groups, prejudices and affections of their spectators against each other so that the satire was not directed from the stage to the auditorium, but in a total pattern throughout the playhouse. The emotional patterning of the plays is discussed as the centre of the Fletcherian design. The elaborate series of effects and often inappropriate stimuli by which Beaumont and Fletcher created a striking, involving emotional system is described. A King and No King and Valentinian are analyzed to demonstrate the emotional patterning. The participation of the audience within the dramatic action is then discussed. The thesis suggests that the audience performs as a corporate character in the plays and traces the complex, histrionic effects by which they are encouraged to do so. The use of disguise and the aside are specifically studied in this light. Finally, the larger implications of audience involvement are considered. Within the social milieu in which the plays are situated, Beaumont and Fletcher create a fictional world of the playhouse in which the involvement of the audience and actors become the whole action of a closed, microcosmic universe. These various, histrionic aspects work together to make the Beaumont and Fletcher plays exciting, if highly artificial creations that were popular in Jacobean England, are important in theatre history, and are of continuing theatrical interest today. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Warrior Women in Early Modern Literature

Fantasies about warrior women circulated in many forms of writing in early modern England: travel narratives such as Sir Walter Ralegh's The Discoverie of Guiana (1595) portray Amazon encounters in the New World; poems like Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene (1596) depict women's skill with a spear; and the plays of Shakespeare, John Fletcher, and others stage the adventurous feats of women on the battlefield. In this dissertation, I analyze the social anxieties that emerge when warrior women threaten gender hierarchies in the patriarchal society of early modern England. The battlefield has traditionally been a site for men to prove their masculinity against other men, so when male characters find themselves submitting to a sword-wielding woman, they are forced to reimagine their own masculine identities as they become the objects acted upon by women. In their experience of subjectivity, these literary warrior women often allude to the historical Queen Elizabeth I, whose reign destabilized ideas about gender and power in the period. Negative evaluations of warrior women often indicate anxiety about Elizabeth as an Amazon-like queen. Thus, portrayals of warrior women often end with a celebration of patriarchal dominance once the male characters have successfully contained the threat of the warrior woman through marriage or death. I argue that these depictions of containment indicate a common desire to maintain patriarchal superiority during and after Elizabeth's reign.

Optimum System Modelling Using Recent Gradient Methods

<p> A study of gradient optimization techniques, in particular as applied to system modelling problems, is made. Three efficient techniques are used to derive optimum second-order and third-order models for a seventh-order system. The optimization techniques are the Fletcher-Powell method, a more recent method proposed by Fletcher and a method based on a more general objective function proposed by Jacobson and Oksman.</p> <p> The approximation is carried out in the time domain. Least squares and least pth criteria are used, and almost minimax results are obtained for large values of p. Values of p up to 10^12 are successfully used. Acceleration and new analysis of convex optimization algorithms

Ces dernières années ont vu une résurgence de l’algorithme de Frank-Wolfe (FW) (également connu sous le nom de méthodes de gradient conditionnel) dans l’optimisation clairsemée et les problèmes d’apprentissage automatique à grande échelle avec des objectifs convexes lisses. Par rapport aux méthodes de gradient projeté ou proximal, une telle méthode sans projection permet d’économiser le coût de calcul des projections orthogonales sur l’ensemble de contraintes. Parallèlement, FW propose également des solutions à structure clairsemée. Malgré ces propriétés prometteuses, FW ne bénéficie pas des taux de convergence optimaux obtenus par les méthodes accélérées basées sur la projection. Nous menons une enquête dé- taillée sur les essais récents pour accélérer FW dans différents contextes et soulignons où se situe la difficulté lorsque l’on vise des taux linéaires globaux en théorie. En outre, nous fournissons une direction prometteuse pour accélérer FW sur des ensembles fortement convexes en utilisant des techniques d’intervalle de dualité et une nouvelle notion de régularité. D’autre part, l’algorithme FW est une covariante affine et bénéficie de taux de convergence accélérés lorsque l’ensemble de contraintes est fortement convexe. Cependant, ces résultats reposent sur des hypothèses dépendantes de la norme, entraînant généralement des bornes invariantes non affines, en contradiction avec la propriété de covariante affine de FW. Dans ce travail, nous introduisons de nouvelles hypothèses structurelles sur le problème (comme la régularité directionnelle) et dérivons une analyse affine invariante et indépendante de la norme de Frank-Wolfe. Sur la base de notre analyse, nous proposons une recherche par ligne affine invariante. Fait intéressant, nous montrons que les recherches en ligne classiques utilisant la régularité de la fonction objectif convergent étonnamment vers une taille de pas invariante affine, malgré l’utilisation de normes dépendantes de l’affine dans le calcul des tailles de pas. Cela indique que nous n’avons pas nécessairement besoin de connaître à l’avance la structure des ensembles pour profiter du taux accéléré affine-invariant. Dans un autre axe de recherche, nous étudions les algorithmes au-delà des méthodes du premier ordre. Les techniques Quasi-Newton approchent le pas de Newton en estimant le Hessien en utilisant les équations dites sécantes. Certaines de ces méthodes calculent le Hessien en utilisant plusieurs équations sécantes mais produisent des mises à jour non symétriques. D’autres schémas quasi-Newton, tels que BFGS, imposent la symétrie mais ne peuvent pas satisfaire plus d’une équation sécante. Nous proposons un nouveau type de mise à jour symétrique quasi-Newton utilisant plusieurs équations sécantes au sens des moindres carrés. Notre approche généralise et unifie la conception de mises à jour quasi-Newton et satisfait des garanties de robustesse prouvables. / Recent years have witnessed a resurgence of the Frank-Wolfe (FW) algorithm, also known as conditional gradient methods, in sparse optimization and large-scale machine learning problems with smooth convex objectives. Compared to projected or proximal gradient methods, such projection-free method saves the computational cost of orthogonal projections onto the constraint set. Meanwhile, FW also gives solutions with sparse structure. Despite of these promising properties, FW does not enjoy the optimal convergence rates achieved by projection-based accelerated methods. On the other hand, FW algorithm is affine-covariant, and enjoys accelerated convergence rates when the constraint set is strongly convex. However, these results rely on norm-dependent assumptions, usually incurring non-affine invariant bounds, in contradiction with FW’s affine-covariant property. In this work, we introduce new structural assumptions on the problem (such as the directional smoothness) and derive an affine in- variant, norm-independent analysis of Frank-Wolfe. Based on our analysis, we pro- pose an affine invariant backtracking line-search. Interestingly, we show that typical back-tracking line-search techniques using smoothness of the objective function surprisingly converge to an affine invariant stepsize, despite using affine-dependent norms in the computation of stepsizes. This indicates that we do not necessarily need to know the structure of sets in advance to enjoy the affine-invariant accelerated rate. Additionally, we provide a promising direction to accelerate FW over strongly convex sets using duality gap techniques and a new version of smoothness. In another line of research, we study algorithms beyond first-order methods. Quasi-Newton techniques approximate the Newton step by estimating the Hessian using the so-called secant equations. Some of these methods compute the Hessian using several secant equations but produce non-symmetric updates. Other quasi- Newton schemes, such as BFGS, enforce symmetry but cannot satisfy more than one secant equation. We propose a new type of quasi-Newton symmetric update using several secant equations in a least-squares sense. Our approach generalizes and unifies the design of quasi-Newton updates and satisfies provable robustness guarantees.

This Prison Where I Live: Authority and Incarceration in Early Modern Drama

The image of the prison looms large in early modern literature. By the sixteenth century, the prison was as much a part of everyday life as the public theatre. Although scholars have recently focused on the prison as a cite of cultural production, the depictions of fictionalized prison have not received much attention. Early modern drama in particular frequently resorts to prison as the setting for political struggle, inviting further discourse on authority and its sources. In this thesis, I argue that the prison's liminality allows early modern playwrights to explore the nature of royal privilege. I analyze Marlowe's Edward II, Shakespeare's Richard II, Shakespeare's The Tempest, and Fletcher's The Island Princess through the cultural and historical lens of imprisonment, determining that the prison is a space where relations and power dynamics between the king and his subjects can be questioned and subsequently condemned, upheld, or transformed. / Master of Arts / Much like modern art and popular culture, sixteenth-century English drama comments on both everyday life and political climate of its time. One image that appears frequently in the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries is the prison. In many plays, the prison appears as a crucial backdrop for political struggle. Setting the action within a prison allows the playwright to ask a series of questions regarding the nature of authority and privilege. In this thesis, I analyze Marlowe's Edward II, Shakespeare's Richard II, Shakespeare's The Tempest, and Fletcher's The Island Princess, focusing on the figure of the royal prisoner.

Challenges towards curriculum implementation in high schools in Mount Fletcher district, Eastern Cape

Many changes especially in the education system were introduced when the ANC-led government came into power in 1994. Curriculum change emerged as key focus in restructuring the educational system and strong emphasis was placed on its implementation. People in leadership in schools were expected to play a pivotal role to ensuring its effective implementation. Curriculum changes are intended to improve the quality of education for the benefit of learners and teachers. However, the curriculum changes that have happened over the years in South African education system do not seem to achieve its intended goals. As a result, it might be argued that some of the changes are contributing to the challenges faced by the school management teams (SMTs), teachers and learners in schools. Poor capacitation of teachers in successfully implementing the curriculum and availability of necessary resources needed are some of the contributing factors that impact on proper effective implementation of curriculum changes. Therefore, this qualitative study investigated the experiences and challenges faced by the school stakeholders in particular, SMTs and educators towards implementation of curriculum change in selected high schools in Mount Fletcher District in the Eastern Cape Province. Data were generated by means of open-ended interview questions and documents review to provide a rich description and explanation of what challenges school stakeholders (SMT and teachers) face in managing the curriculum implementation in their particular contexts. It became apparent from the findings that there are major curriculum challenges facing SMTs and teachers in managing the curriculum implementation in their schools. These included lack of resources, inadequate training and heavy workloads. However, measures were suggested to limit the challenges towards curriculum implementation in order for the SMTs and teachers to manage and implement the curriculum effectively. The study concludes by pointing out that although SMTs and teachers try to perform their roles and responsibilities to ensure effective implementation of curriculum in their contexts, they still require training and on-going support to execute certain aspects of their duties. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Church and chapel : parish ministry and Methodism in Madeley, c.1760-1785, with special reference to the ministry of John Fletcher

This thesis examines the ministry of John Fletcher (1729-85), vicar of Madeley, Shropshire (vic. 1760-85) as a case study on the Church of England and Methodism in the eighteenth century. Studies of Fletcher have tended to focus either on his contribution to Methodist theology or on his designation as Wesley's successor as the leader of the Methodists. The parish of Madeley has been, for the most part, peripheral to Fletcher studies. The present thesis, however, has aimed to examine Fletcher in his parochial context; to study both what the parish tells us about Fletcher, but also what Fletcher tells us about the parish, and more specifically, about the church in the eighteenth century in a local context. The main argument of this thesis is that Fletcher's ministry at Madeley was representative of a variation of a pro-Anglican Methodism--localized, centred upon the parish church, and rooted in the Doctrines and Liturgy of the Church of England. Three recent publications have provided a triad for understanding Fletcher: (1) in his industrial context; (2) in his theological context; and (3), in his relationship with leaders in the Evangelical Revival. This thesis has sought to examine a fourth component: Fletcher's work as an ordained clergyman of the Church of England, that is, in his ecclesial and ministerial context. The main body of the thesis focuses on two primary aspects of Fletcher's parish ministry: his stated duties and his diligence in carrying out other responsibilities and meeting other needs which arose, including addressing the various tensions which developed during his incumbency. Fletcher's background and his call to parochial ministry as well as the religious history of Madeley are outlined first (Chapter 1). There are three chapters which examine his performance of stated duties: worship services and preaching (Chapter 2); pastoral care andeducation (Chapter 5); and confrontation of erroneous doctrine (Chapter 6). Fletcher's ministry also included a scheme of church extension, represented primarily by his development of religious societies on which other aspects of his parochial duty built (Chapter 3). His evangelicalism and commitment to his parish simultaneously raised tensions between Fletcher and his parishioners (provoked by his 'enthusiasm' or zeal), and between Fletcher and John Wesley, whose variations of Methodism had similar aims, but different models of practice. A chapter is devoted specifically to these issues (Chapter 4).Fletcher's chapel meetings formed an auxiliary arm of the church, operating as outposts throughout his parish. His parishioners considered his ministerial model a 'Methodist' one even though it was not technically part of Wesley's Connexion (other than the fact that his itinerants were guests in the parish). In all, it is the conclusion of this thesis that Fletcher's pastoral ministry represents some of the best work of Anglicanism in the eighteenth century, demonstrating that despite the manifest challenges of industrializing society, residual dissent, and competition from the church's rivals, the Establishment was not incapable of competing in the religious marketplace.

School management imperatives in addressing the needs of impoverished secondary school learners in rural areas

The study focuses on management strategies of the highly impoverished secondary schools of the Mount Fletcher District in the Eastern Cape. Challenges facing the impoverished learners and managerial experiences of principals of these schools have been discussed in the study. A literature review provided a conceptual framework and covered definitions of poverty, school management strategies, leadership styles and qualities required for a successful principal heading a secondary school with impoverished learners. An empirical investigation using a qualitative approach was conducted and data gathered by means of interviews with principals, Life Orientation teachers and parents. Finally a synopsis of findings and recommendations were made to assist the policy makers, Departmental officials, principals, teachers and parents in proper management of secondary schools in the poor rural communities. / Educational Leadership and Management / M.
