Diverzita lesní vegetace Českého středohoří / Diversity of forest vegetation in the region of České středohoří

Abstract The topography of the Milešov part of the České středohoří Mts represents a suitable model for study of spatial distribution of diversity and the effects of ecological factors on species diversity and composition. Near-natural forest vegetation was sampled at eleven hills by stratified-randomly sited relevés. Soil samples were collected in relevés at nine hills also. The soil samples were used for maximal capillary capability, pH, carbon and nitrogen volume analyses. These ecological factors, as well as tree cover, altitude and heat load index, were used for examination of the correlation of ecological factors with diversity, species richness and species composition. Positive relationship between species richness and heat load index and soil reaction was identified. Species diversity (Shannon index) positively correlates with soil reaction also. After partialling out geographic components in the samples, a significant correlation between the heat load index, tree cover and altitude and species composition of the herb and shrub layer was found. Values of alpha and beta components were rated using partitioning of diversity to alpha and beta components at four levels (relevé - aspect - hill - landscape). Testing methods for calibrating Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) diameter growth predictions

The Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) is a growth and yield modeling system widely-used for predicting stand and tree-level attributes for management and planning applications in North American forests. The accuracy of FVS predictions for a range of tree and stand level attributes depends a great deal on the performance of the diameter increment model and its predictions of change in diameter at breast height (DBH) over time. To address the challenge of predicting growth in highly variable and geographically expansive forest systems, FVS was designed to include an internal calibration algorithm that makes use of growth observations, when available, from permanent inventory plots. The basic idea is that observed growth rates on a collection of remeasured trees are used to adjust or "calibrate" FVS diameter growth predictions. Therefore, DBH modeling was the focus of this investigation. Five methods were proposed for local calibration of individual tree DBH growth predictions and compared to two sets of results generated without calibration. Data from the US Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program were used to test the methods for eleven widely-distributed forest tree species in Virginia. Two calibration approaches were based on median prediction errors from locally-observed DBH increments spanning a five year average time interval. Two were based on simple linear regression models fitted to the locally-observed prediction errors, and one method employed a mixed effects regression model with a random intercept term estimated from locally-observed DBH increments. Data witholding, specifically a leave-one-out cross-validation was used to compare results of the methods tested. Results showed that any of the calibration approaches tested in general led to improved accuracy of DBH growth predictions, with either of the median-based methods or regression based methods performing better than the random-effects-based approach. Equivalence testing showed that median or regression-based local calibration methods met error tolerances within ± 12% of observed DBH increments for all species with the random effects approach meeting a larger tolerance of ± 17%. These results showed improvement over uncalibrated models, which failed to meet tolerances as high as ± 30% for some species in a newly-fitted DBH growth model for Virginia, and as high as ± 170% for an existing model fitted to data from a much larger region of the Southeastern United States. Local calibration of regional DBH increment models provides an effective means of substantially reducing prediction errors when a relatively small set of observations are available from local sources such as permanent forest inventory plots, or the FIA database. / MS / The Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) is a growth and yield model widely-used for predicting stand dynamics, management and decision support in North American forests. The system of integrated analytical tools in FVS is primarily based on the performance of the diameter increment model and the subsequent use of predicted in diameter at breast height (DBH) over time in forecasting tree attributes. To address the challenge of predicting growth in highly variable and geographically expansive forest systems, FVS was designed to include an internal calibration algorithm that makes use of growth observations, when available, from permanent inventory plots. The basic idea was that observed growth rates on a small set of remeasured trees are used to adjust or “calibrate” FVS growth predictions. The FVS internal calibration was the subject being investigated here. Five alternative methods were proposed attributed to a specific site or stand of interest and compared to two sets of results, which were based on median prediction errors, generated without calibration. Results illustrated that median-based methods or regression based methods performed better than the random-effects-based approach using independently observed growth data from Forest Service FIA re-measurements in Virginia. Local calibration of regional DBH increment models provides an effective means of substantially reducing prediction errors. The results of this study should also provide information to evaluate the efficiency of FVS calibration alternatives and a possible method for future implementation.

Biomass and carbon stock of the natural forests in Vietnam are still not clear due to limitation of knowledge and financial. In this paper, the results of estimating biomass and carbon stocks of the natural forests at Me Linh Biodiversity Station are shown. There are two forest types in this study: the forest vegetation restored after shifting cultivation (vegetation type I) and the forest vegetation restored after clear cutting exploitation (vegetation type II). As the results, the estimated biomass of the forest vegetation restored after shifting cultivation is 86.80 ton.ha-1 and the estimated biomass of the forest vegetation restored after clear cutting exploitation is higher, about 131.59 ton.ha-1. The carbon stock in plants was about 43.40 ton.ha-1 of vegetation type I and 65.79 ton.ha-1 of vegetation type II. The carbon storage in soil of vegetation type I is 79.01 ton.ha-1 and vegetation type II is 99.65 ton.ha-1. Hence, the total of carbon stock in forest vegetation I and II are accounted by 122.41ton.ha-1 and 165.44 ton.ha-1, respectively. In general, it can be pointed out that the naturally recovering secondary forest at Me Linh Station is the secondary young forest with the low economic value due to shortly restored process (about 10-20 years), the flora is not rich and abundant, and there are only commonly pioneer and light demanding tree species. / Sinh khối và trữ lượng các bon của rừng tự nhiên ở Việt Nam vẫn ít được quan tâm của do hạn chế về kiến thức và tài chính. Trong bài báo này, chúng tôi đưa ra kết quả của việc ước lượng sinh khối và tổng hợp các bon của các thảm thực vật rừng thứ sinh phục hồi tự nhiên tại Trạm Đa dạng Sinh học Mê Linh, tỉnh Vĩnh Phúc- Việt Nam, nơi có loại hình thảm thực vật chính, đó là thảm thực vật phục hồi sau nương rẫy (kiểu thảm thục vật I) và thảm thực vật phục hồi sau khai thác kiệt (kiểu thảm thực vật II) nhằm mục đích đánh giá tiềm năng của rừng thứ sinh tại khu vực nghiên cứu. Sinh khối của thảm thực vật phục hồi sau nương rẫy là 86,80 tấn/ha. Sinh khối của thảm thực vật phục hồi sau khai thác cao hơn, đạt 131.59 tấn/ha. Lượng các bon hấp thu trong đất của thảm thực vật I là 79,01 tấn/ha và thảm thực vật II là 99,65 tấn/ha. Như vậy, tổng lượng các bon được hấp thu trong mỗi loại hình thảm thực vật trên là: 122,41 tấn/ha (thảm thực vật I) và 165,14 tấn/ha. EFFECTS OF REGENERATION OPENING SIZE AND SIMULATED CROP TREE RELEASE ON VOLUME YIELDS AND ECONOMIC VALUE IN OAK-DOMINATED STANDS

Patch clearcutting can be put to effective use for landowners with relatively small stands of timber. This project was designed to determine how clearcut opening size and mid-rotation crop tree release affects the value and volume of sawtimber at the end of rotation. In 1960 patch clearcuts were established in three different diameters, 50ft (.05ac), 150ft (.41ac), and 250ft (1.13ac). Current stand data (2011) was collected to determine trees per acre, basal area, average tree diameter, volume, and value. These data were input into a growth simulator to determine future trees per acre, basal area, average tree diameter, volume, and value with a crop tree release treatment and a control to 2061. The 50ft openings yielded little merchantable volume at mid-rotation and were primarily composed by shade tolerant species. In the 150ft and 250ft openings, there was better species diversity and an increase in sawtimber volume and value. Using openings of 150ft or greater, landowners can regenerate commercially important species and manage their forests to produce valued timber and maintain aesthetics.

Exploring patterns of phytodiversity, ethnobotany, plant geography and vegetation in the mountains of Miandam, Swat, Northern Pakistan

Das Miandam-Untersuchungsgebiet (35° 1′- 5′ N, 72° 30′-37′ E) liegt in der Swat-Region der Provinz Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (ehemals North West Frontier Province) im nördlichen Pakistan. Die vorliegende Arbeit berücksichtigt sowohl ethnobotanische und pflanzensoziologische Aspekte als auch die Pflanzenartendiversität innerhalb des Gebietes. Aufgrund der hohen Habitatvielfalt weist das Miandam-Gebiet einen großen Reichtum von Medizinalpflanzen auf. Die im Rahmen der Arbeit durchgeführte ethnobotanische Studie dokumentiert das Vorkommen der Medizinalpflanzen sowie deren Nutzung in der Region. Weiterhin wurden die durch Sammlerpräferierten Lebensräume bestimmt und evaluiert inwiefern die Heilpflanzen durch Sammlung und Habitatzerstörung bedroht werden. Insgesamt wurden 106 traditionelle Heilpflanzen aus 54 Pflanzenfamilien verzeichnet. Zu den am häufigsten gefundenen Wuchsformen zählten mehrjährige (43%) und kurzlebige Kräuter (23%), Sträucher (16%) und Bäume (15%). Ein Großteil der untersuchten Heilpflanzen und ihrer Produkte wird zur Behandlung von Magen-Darm-Erkrankungen eingesetzt. Die Produkte werden vorrangig als Sud oder Pulver zubereitet und oral angewendet. Achtzig der 106 traditionellen Heilpflanzen gehören der Gruppe der einheimischen Arten an. Fast 50% der Pflanzenarten treten dabei in synanthroper Vegetation auf, während der Rest in naturnaher Umgebung (z.B. extensiv beweidete Wald- und Graslandbereiche) vorgefunden werden kann. Wälder sind der Ursprung der meisten nicht synanthropen einheimischen Medizinalpflanzen. Drei Arten (Aconitum violaceum, Colchicum luteum, Jasminum humile) können als Folge intensiven Sammelns als bedroht eingestuft werden. Um die pflanzensoziologischen und phytogeografischen Aspekte des Projektes abzudecken wurde die Vegetation des Miandam-Gebietes mit einem Fokus auf Wäldern, Gebüschen und anderen Formationen untersucht. Die Ergebnisse der Vegetationserhebungen wurden mit denen anderer Studien in der weiteren Umgebung des Hindukush-Himalayas verglichen. Weiterhin wurde untersucht inwiefern die Waldökosysteme durch anthropogene Aktivitäten im Untersuchungsgebiet bedroht sind. Die im Gebiet verzeichneten Gefäßpflanzenarten umfassen insgesamt 33 Bäume, 52 Sträucher, 305 Kräuter und 11 Lianen. Basierend auf einer multivariaten Analyse konnten 12 Pflanzengesellschaften identifiziert werden. Die Spanne dieser Gesellschaften reichte von subtropischen semiariden Wäldern mit Ailanthus altissima im Tiefland zu alpinen Rasen von Sibbaldia cuneata durchsetzt mit Juniperus. Die dominierende Vegetation des Untersuchungsgebietes besteht aus von Abies pindrow und Viburnum grandiflorum Wäldern. Eine georeferenzierte Karte der Vegetation erleichtert die Lokalisierung der ökologisch interessanten Vegetation. Artenreichtum und –diversität wurden entlang eines Höhengradienten untersucht. Dazu wurde die Alpha- sowie Beta-Diversität verschiedener Wuchsformtypen bestimmt. Der Artenreichtum aller Gefäßpflanzenarten erreichte sein Maximum zwischen 2200-2500 m. Dagegen zeigte der Artenreichtum der Sträucher einen glockenkurvenartigen Verlauf mit einem Maximum zwischen 2000 und 2200 m. Die höchste Alpha-Diversität der Gefäßpflanzenarten wurde in den tieferen Lagen des Untersuchungsgebietes verzeichnet. Die Beta-Diversität aller Wuchsformtypen zeigte entlang des gesamten Höhengradienten hohe Werte und somit einen starken Artenwechsel. Die Beta-Diversität der Straucharten fluktuiert entlang des Höhengradienten und zeigt damit ein einzigartiges Muster.

Light is essential component of forest ecosystem, as limited light availability in forest-floor restricts herb and tree seedlings growth. Importance of light availability for maintaining plant species diversity and community structure wasn't sufficiently evaluated in the Czech Republic. This study focus on the ecological relevance of light availability on both landscape and local scale. Relationship of light to cover, diversity and species composition was quantified in the thesis. Dominant tree species affected light availability and its spatial variability. Light availability was along the soil reaction and slope most influential factor for large-scale species diversity. Within-site light variability affected plant diversity more than soil reaction variability. Measuring light by means of hemispherical photography seems to be an appropriate for studies like this. Light availability influnence on community compostition is weak in comparison with other environmental gradients.
