Assessment performance of the foundation in sandstone of a Dam: case study of the Jaburu I Dam" / AvaliaÃÃo do comportamento da fundaÃÃo de barragem em Rocha ArenÃtica: estudo de caso da Barragem Jaburu I

LucrÃcia Nogueira de Sousa 23 January 2014 (has links)
The foundation of the Jaburu I dam it is a classical performance case of foundations in sandstone sedimentary rock. The continuous monitoring of the dam has been the detected the non-regular seepages and adopted in establishing the planning and execution of the remediation campaigns in way to keep the foundation and damâs structures in safety conditions over three decades of operation, in despite of the ineffectiveness of conventional treatment foundation in sedimentary formation that had been used. Seepage anomalies indentified since the first filling of the reservoir in some regions of embankment and its foundation, detaching a significant flow in the left abutment which reached the maxima discharge of 47 l / s in 1988. Since then new points of resurgences have been identified and monitored by flow gages located in the downstream region. This monograph presents the events recorded in the flow gages and the remedial campaigns adopted to reduce the seepage in the foundation, embankment and abutments of the dam, as well as others specific interventions designed to recover the internal drain, stabilize the dam and to fill the cavities formed by the decomposition of the sandstone rock in the foundation. After the publication of the Law 12.334/2010, which established the National Policy of Dam Safety, it was established a complete list of responsibilities related to the safety of dams in Brazil, some of them already taken as routine by the Government of Cearà since 2002. This monograph recommends to the rock foundations of the dam, treatments with new sealing technologies that would mitigate the present anomalies.

Factors influencing the implementation of mathematical word problems in foundation phase classrooms: theory and practice

Van Zyl, Marinda January 2012 (has links)
This treatise investigated mathematical word problems (MWPs) and their implementation in Foundation Phase classrooms. Factors influencing the implementation of MWPs, with specific reference to the teachers and learners involved, emerged. Direct and indirect factors influencing the implementation of MWPs were acknowledged. Student teachers‟ reflections on classroom practices experienced during their teaching practice training period for their initial teaching qualification inspired me as lecturer to embark on my own journey of inquiry and study the phenomenon above. As this study was undertaken in South Africa, the need arose to take into consideration the changes that have occurred since 1994. Observations of how democratic values and desires feature, or do not feature, when engaging with the phenomenon had to be considered. This study also aimed to emphasise inequalities in everyday practice. The discovery of “good practice” (Cooper 2010:170) contributed towards addressing the factors that emerged as influencing the implementation of MWPs. Jansens (2009:170) book Knowledge in the blood presents compelling reasons for disclosing the state of current practice and seeks alternatives to promote the required change in mathematics teaching, with one of the perspectives on mathematics education being the emphasis on implementing MWPs in the Foundation Phase. Teachers often extend their own preferences into practice and emphasise their “knowledge in the blood” as their view of good practice. Learners‟ needs and learner diversity are often overlooked. Learners‟ assessment scores, both nationally and internationally, have revealed more negative facts. These low scores have often been, and often still are, news flashes, contributing to a negative view of teachers and education. In order to address the widespread sentiment that there is “no hope for teachers” (Jansen 2011:19), and to avoid a recycling of negativity, “good practice” (Cooper 2010:170) is key to success. This study aimed to discover hope for teachers and learners.

Optimisation of the use and access to financial services at the base of the pyramid in South Africa

Mokhatshane, Mosala William 02 April 2011 (has links)
At the recent South African Banking Associations inaugural summit held on September 2010, it was estimated that the unbanked South Africans have put approximately R12 billion “under their mattresses” (Greyvenstein, 2010). This money would have a huge impact in the banking system if it was banked. It is widely held that whilst this problem is not uniquely South African and as per the latest Finscope survey results, since 2004, when Finscope first began tracking the number of adults not being served, a steady decline has been noted over the years in the number of banked individuals. The 2009 survey shows a further 2% deterioration when compared to 2008 in the financially excluded category. The 2009 Finscope report findings also show for the first time since 2004, a decline in the percentage number of South African adults who are banked from 63% in 2008 to 60% in 2009. The financial services sector has been identified as playing a crucial role in this transformation through its financing activities. It is therefore in this context that Beck and de la Torre (2006) argued that broad access to financial services is related to economic and social development. The South African government has therefore implemented various initiatives to combat these challenges. These initiatives, some together with the private sector, include the Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment Act, Financial Sector Charter, Dedicated Banks Bill and the launch of the Mzansi initiative. The Government is aware that broad-based BEE cannot happen unless previously disadvantaged individuals, especially the poor, are able to access financial services – in order to borrow and invest in small businesses, to save and to protect themselves against risks. The basis of the research is therefore to explore some of the reasons for the low access to financial services in South Africa’s Foundation of the Pyramid (LSM 1- 4) and to find possible solutions by building a model that could possibly work based on propositions related to aspects of the literature around employment status and income, access to credit, some type of identifiable address / dwellings, education, use of technology and costs. The analysis of the proposed model using frequency, descriptive statistics and the results of the chi-square test upheld all but one of the propositions and showed the possibility of this model to work in South Africa. The prevalence and management of stressors experienced by foundation phase teachers in rural Mbombela schools

Mabuza, Pertunia Thobile, Govender, S. January 2019 (has links)
Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the Master in Education in the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education in the Faculty of education at the University of Zululand, 2019. / This study forms part of an ongoing attempt to understand the prevalence and management of stressors experienced by teachers. The main focus for this study is foundation phase teachers in rural Mbombela schools. Quantitative and qualitative measures were used in order to gain more insight into the prevalence and management of stressors experienced by teachers. A questionnaire with open-ended and closed-ended questionnaires was used to collect data. The results of the study indicated a high prevalence of foundation phase teachers experiencing stressors. There was also an indication that the teachers do have the necessary skills to cope with stressors that they experience as a result of their teaching and learning environment. Exercise, spirituality and planning were the main techniques teachers used in the management of stressors. Recommendations were made in order to assist teachers with the management of stressors they experience as a result of their teaching and learning environment. Avenues for further research are also discussed.

Vibration Analysis Of Cracked Beams On Elastic Foundation Using Timoshenko Beam Theory

Batihan, Ali Cagri 01 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, transverse vibration of a cracked beam on an elastic foundation and the effect of crack and foundation parameters on transverse vibration natural frequencies are studied. Analytical formulations are derived for a beam with rectangular cross section. The crack is an open type edge crack placed in the medium of the beam and it is uniform along the width of the beam. The cracked beam rests on an elastic foundation. The beam is modeled by two different beam theories, which are Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and Timoshenko beam theory. The effect of the crack is considered by representing the crack by rotational springs. The compliance of the spring that represents the crack is obtained by using fracture mechanics theories. Different foundation models are discussed / these models are Winkler Foundation, Pasternak Foundation, and generalized foundation. The equations of motion are derived by applying Newton&#039 / s 2nd law on an infinitesimal beam element. Non-dimensional parameters are introduced into equations of motion. The beam is separated into pieces at the crack location. By applying the compatibility conditions at the crack location and boundary conditions, characteristic equation whose roots give the non-dimensional natural frequencies is obtained. Numerical solutions are done for a beam with square cross sectional area. The effects of crack ratio, crack location and foundation parameters on transverse vibration natural frequencies are presented. It is observed that existence of crack reduces the natural frequencies. Also the elastic foundation increases the stiffness of the system thus the natural frequencies. The natural frequencies are also affected by the location of the crack.
