Comparative Study of Indiana University Foundation and Peking University Education Foundation: Why they are different and what to learn?

Xu, Zheng 19 July 2010 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The thesis made a comparative study of two university foundations, namely Indiana University Foundation, the United States, and Peking University Education Foundation, China, from a historical approach. Many theories influenced the author’s thinking about the issues, such as nonprofit organizations, elite philanthropy, and civil society. The paper seeks to: (1) make an overview of the development of the two foundations; (2) analyze and compare their differences in nature, structure, and fundraising practices, etc.; (3) examine the underlying reasons which may involve social, political, economic and legal factors; and (4) explore the future development of university foundations in China. In an era of accelerated globalization, the boom of diaspora giving and growth of nonprofits set the stage for the development of philanthropy in China. While continuing to draw from the extensive experiences of its American counterparts, the Peking University Education Foundation needs to reflect on its own actual situation and explore a road tailored to Chinese-style university foundations.

Two-Dimensional Analysis of Stacked Geosynthetic Tubes

Klusman, Craig Raymond 10 July 1998 (has links)
Geosynthetic tubes filled with a slurry-mix are considered. The mix is usually dredged from a nearby area and pumped directly into the tubes. The tubes are used in a variety of applications including breakwaters, groins, and temporary levees. This thesis considers single and stacked geosynthetic tubes resting on rigid and deformable foundations. A two-dimensional analysis is performed on the cross-section of a very long tube. The program Mathematica is utilized for the analysis. A few assumptions are made regarding the general behavior of the tube. The tube is assumed to be an inextensible membrane with no bending stiffness. To allow for a closed-form integral solution, it is assumed that no friction exists between the tubes and at the foundation. A single tube, two stacked tubes, and a 2-1 formation are studied. Both rigid and deformable foundations are considered. The deformable foundation is modeled as a tensionless Winkler foundation with normal forces proportional to the downward deflection of the ground. An external water load on one side is also investigated for a single tube and a 2-1 formation, with rigid blocks to prevent the structure from sliding along the ground. Example cross-sectional profiles are given. Results from the analysis include structure height, circumferential tension, and ground deflections. / Master of Science

"It's my time now" : an exploration of the relationship between Foundation degree students' epistemological beliefs and their emerging identities as learners

Osborne, Laura January 2012 (has links)
This thesis is an exploratory case study that investigates the epistemological beliefs of students’ on a Foundation degree in Teaching and learning, and the possible influence of these beliefs on their learning. Critical realism provides the theoretical context for this case study through a multi-phase approach. This study explores the students’ beliefs of knowledge, knowing and learning through the employment of questionnaires and in-depth interviews which reveals the stories and experiences of five of the students. The research data suggests there is an apparent relationship between personal epistemological beliefs and the engagement with learning in higher education for these students. Moreover it emerged that there were personal transformations in their attitudes and beliefs towards knowledge, knowing and learning that had a profound impact on their self-belief. The changes can be attributed, in part, to the students’ capacity for change-readiness and openness to learning mediated by the situated and contextualised nature of the learning environment. Findings from this case study are not generalisable due to its specificity to one particular setting and small number of participants. However, a conceptual model of the relationship between students’ epistemological beliefs and transformation is offered exposing the complexity of social phenomena in real-life settings. The findings are discussed within the context of previous research. As part of my own learning, and in harmony with the theme of learning and change of the participants, I have also explored my learning changes as a result of engaging in my doctoral studies.

Právní úprava nadací a nadačních fondů / Legislation governing foundations and endowment funds

Sose, Aneta January 2016 (has links)
Legislation governing foundations and endowment funds Abstract The diploma thesis deals with the topic of foundations and endowment funds with a focus on a current legislation, that is reincorporated into the general legislation after the recodification of the private law. Brief introduction to the topic of foundations and endowment funds is followed by the chapter containing a historical analysis of foundations on the Czech territory since the 9th century. Significant changes, which the foundations went through and caused their present form, are highlighted. The third chapter is the most important and the longest part of the thesis, as it focuses on a current legislation. The chapter defines the institutes of foundation and endowment fund in the contemporary society and it is divided into the two subchapters that concerns both endowment entities separately. The diploma thesis defines the purpose, property and bodies. There is further clarified the establishment and formation process and the reverse dissolution and termination process of these legal entities. In addition, the chapter formulates the Public Benefit Status and the conclusion is devoted to the new terminology brought by the recodification. It is followed by the fourth chapter, which compares a current legislation with the previous one, that was...

Financování nadací a nadačních fondů / Financing of foundations and endowment funds

Espinoza, Blanka January 2014 (has links)
Foundations and endowment funds, being a part of the non-profit sector, have their integral place in the civil sector of the Czech Republic. The main mission of foundations and endowment funds is to achieve public benefit which, under the current legislation, foundations achieve primarily by providing grants to third parties. However, they can only fulfil such purpose if they have a sufficient income. This paper aims to summarise the theoretical and practical possibilities of obtaining financial resources by foundation entities and their classification. The paper is largely influenced by the recodification of private law; upon the new Civil Code coming into effect on 1 January 2014, there will be a significant liberalisation of the foundation law and the legislation applicable to foundations and endowment funds will be completely transferred to the new legal regulation under the umbrella term "foundation". The introductory part of the paper summarises the present and future legislation applicable to foundation entities, defines their position in the civil sector, and discusses the historical development that had an impact on the current funding of foundations and endowment funds. The second part of the paper classifies foundation entities by various criteria, since it is primarily the typology of...

Finansiering av medicinsk forskning genom stiftelsen Therese och Johan Anderssons minne, 1931-1964

Ahlenius, Erik January 2016 (has links)
In the first half of the 20th century, the researchers in the medical sciences in Sweden were dependent on funding from private foundations. Earlier research has shown that the foundation Stiftelsen Therese och Johan Anderssons Minne was a financier of great importance especially for the 1920s until the 1950s. This paper is written with the purpose of examining how the financing has changed over time, by analyzing the foundations yearly accounts from 1931 until 1963. I will show that physiologists and chemists took a dominant position in the fight for funds. In conclusion, it seems that the fact that the colleague of teachers at Karolinska had the power to decide who to fund were an important factor for the foundations activity. The characteristics of the medical research exercised by the researchers applying for funds were not the sole factor which affected the outcome.

Reading for understanding: An investigation into teachers’ reading comprehension strategies in Grade three isiXhosa Home Language classrooms in the Western Cape

Siyothula, Ayanda January 2019 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / Reading is one of the components of literacy that plays a crucial role in accessing knowledge. It develops the children’s mind and stimulates their understanding of the reading content and enables them to function and communicate effectively in society. Research conducted in the field of literacy suggests that there is a literacy crisis (especially in reading), around the world. Recent research indicates that South African Foundation Phase learners perform poorly in reading comprehension. Considering poor literacy results observed in South Africa, it is important to explore reading as a socio-cultural and cognitive practice and to identify the factors that contribute towards adequate acquisition of reading comprehension skills in the Foundation Phase. Thus the focus of this study is on reading comprehension in isiXhosa Home Language which is used as the main language of learning and teaching from Grade R - 3. I have used a qualitative approach as an underpinning research methodological framework for this study. Data was collected by means of interviews and classroom observations from two selected Grade three classrooms in one primary school in the Western Cape. The findings of this study illustrate the significance of learners’ prior knowledge and the use of adequate resources to enhance learners’ reading comprehension. The study concludes that reading comprehension is a cognitive process that demands innovative teaching approaches that will facilitate meaningful learning across the curriculum.
