Magazine Hill : a weathered continuum

NDLTD Innovative ETD Award 2012. This dissertation is rooted within a process of unification, a personal struggle to understand the fragile relationship that exists between architecture and time. The project focuses on architecture’s potential to adapt according to the passage of time, through the process of aging and weathering. This study is founded in the aim to re-establish a connection between the continuum of time and architecture. The project places contemporary commemorative architecture under the limelight, criticising the static notion of heritage commemoration through the typologies of museums and memorials. These typologies often evolve into static monuments, where the relevance to contemporary society can be questioned. The architectural response of this dissertation is thus focused on commemoration through everyday use. The proposed historical site (Magazine Hill) forms a comprehensive construct of different layers of time and influence. This mysterious, abandoned and isolated site consists of two ammunition magazines, five bomb shelters and ammunition factories, all structures that represent an era of unrest in South Africa. In 1945 a mysterious explosion of the Central Magazine scarred the face of Magazine Hill, leading the activities on the site to an early death, trapping architecture in time and abandonment. The proposed programme forms part of the conceptual premise of mediation, unifying different opposites inherent in both Magazine Hill and the South African context. A brass foundry is proposed to recycle the spent ammunition shells of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), thereby introducing brass artists as a public interface to Magazine Hill. Where ammunition was once produced, ammunition is now reduced. This programme could form mediation between the public and the military; exposing different layers of the past by reinstating a connection between architecture and time. A areia de fundição aglomerada com a resina fenólica se transforma num resíduo perigoso após o seu uso na indústria metalúrgica. O fenol, o meta-cresol e orto-cresol foram os principais compostos encontrados na areia de fundição. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo estudar a capacidade de degradação bacteriana do fenol, do meta-cresol e do orto-cresol. Para tanto foi isolada uma cepa proveniente de um resíduo de extração de petróleo tendo sido identificada pelo MALDI-Biotyper como sendo do gênero Burkholderia . Foi realizado o processo de ativação e crescimento bacteriano em pH 6,5, 180 rpm, 28°C e meio de cultura com mínimo de nutrientes, tendo como fonte de carbono areia de fundição contaminada com a resina fenólica. Durante os ensaios foram estudados o crescimento da bactéria bem como a degradação dos compostos fenólicos citados neste texto. A quantificação do fenol, meta-cresol e orto-cresol livres foram determinadas pelo método de cromatografia líquida de alta performance (HPLC - High Performance Liquid Chromatography ). A taxa de degradação para as três substâncias foi de 100%. / The casting sand agglomerated with the phenolic resin becomes a hazardous waste after its use in the metallurgical industry. The main compounds found in sand are phenol and its derivatives ortho-cresol and meta-cresol. The present work aims to study the bacterial degradability of the phenolic compounds present in the foundry sand. A strain from na oil extraction residue was isolated and identified by MALDI-Biotyper as Burkholderia diffusa. It was carried out the process of bacterial activation and growth at pH 6.5, 180rpm of agitation, temperature of 28°C and culture médium with minimum nutrients, using phenolic sand as the only source of carbon. During the tests the growth of the bacterium as well as the degradation of the phenolic compounds were studied. Quantification of free phenol, meta-cresol and ortho-cresol was determined by the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The degradation rate for the three substances was 100%.

A Study of Business Architecture of Foundry Fab under Mobile Communication Development Trend

The growth rate in the field of Computer, which is one of the traditional 3C industries, has been getting slower in recent years, then Communication replaces it and serves as the main driving force to keep the 3C industry growing. The author chooses mobile phone as the main subject of the thesis to analyze since mobile phone is the product which has the largest market share and the greatest potential for growth in the field of Communication. Under current trend development of mobile phone, the thesis aims to analyze and investigate 1)the product architecture of mobile phone; 2) what kind of change it has on the business architecture of mobile phone chip manufacturer; 3) what kind of impact it brings on chip manufacturer which works in concert, i.e. Foundry Fab. The research begins with the analysis of the application terminal of market. The author classifies the mobile phone into two categories, namely, low-end and high-end, and organized the collected information/data about the current market demand of mobile phone, changes of internal mobile phone devices, and requirements on Foundry OEM services. Also, data/info about the strategic activities of leading mobile phone IC chip corporations are collected and organized; the collected data will be presented and analyzed. Finally, the analysis will be the base, which the conclusion will be drawn upon. The study discovers that the original product architecture of mobile phone displays an ¡§integral-closed¡¨ structure; however, under current trend development of mobile phone, the low-end mobile phone had changed into a ¡§modular-closed¡¨ structure, even increasing the ¡§open¡¨ degree. The product architecture of high-end mobile phone is characterized by ¡§integral¡¨ and ¡§modular¡¨ since the specifications of internal devices of high-end mobile phone are more complicated and still not established yet. Moreover, the high-end mobile phone is in the stage of development, together with the addition of new functions, which in turn resulted in a perplexing and uncertain business environment. Therefore, companies often form strategic alliances in order to reduce the risks of developing new products in an unstable business environment. The competition pattern has changed from ¡§firm against firm¡¨ to ¡§alliance against alliance¡¨. Hence, we can tell the impacts resulted from the change of product architecture on business architecture. Finally, the answers of some questions are still cannot be found not due to the limitation of the study. Therefore, a list of unsolved questions is given in the end of the study so as to form an initial lead in the development of a ground for further research.

The main goal of my diploma was global analysis of the flow of material in production of wheel frames for train in company ČKD Kutná Hora a. s., foundry České Budějovice. I mainly aimed at mapping steps that are part of production of frames. The next part of my diploma work was to find the best solvent for flow of material in manufactured. For good result was used method of sighting, time recording and discussion with workers. I found the best posibility result. I resommended transporter of TRANSPORTA CHRUDIM company. I is one of real solvent. During the working on my diploma work I resulted from my own finding obtained by the consultations with executives and by the analyse of the documents which I had available.

Denna rapport undersöker hur motivationen skiljer sig mellan World of Warcraft: Dragonflight och World of Warcraft Classic i syfte att belysa hur uppdateringar av spel kan påverka spelarbasen. En kvantitativ undersökning utfördes online för att mäta motivation utifrån självbestämmandeteorin och Quantic Foundrys Gamer Motivation Model. Resultaten visar att spelare av Classic känner en högre immersion och att spelet i högre grad uppfyller motivationsbehoven självbestämmande och tillhörighet. Vidare har Classic högre värden på motivationsfaktorerna community och power, medan story värderas högre i Dragonflight. Förslag läggs fram för vidareforskning gällande kopplingen mellan utpekade förändringar i spelet och uppmätta skillnader i motivation mellan spelversionerna. Vidare kan undersökning av frustration, vid sidan av uppfyllda behov, anses vara gynnsam för att få en större förståelse för skillnaderna mellan versionerna.

The data for this study were provided by thirty metalworking instructors of Texas high schools. Of the Texas high schools offering foundry as part of their metalworking curriculum, all included aluminum as a basic metal. In addition, the amount of metals used and their treatment varied from school to school.

Um dos maiores problemas do setor da fundição de metais é a produção de resíduos sólidos, constituídos basicamente pelas areias residuais. Geralmente, o uso de aditivos e ligantes no processo de fundição limita a reutilização da areia, o que obriga as indústrias a destinar esse resíduo a depósitos de descarte, apesar da boa qualidade que a areia apresenta para outros usos, principalmente na engenharia civil. No Brasil, a produção de fundidos em 2006 alcançou três milhões de toneladas, com a geração de, aproximadamente, uma tonelada de resíduo para cada tonelada de metal produzida. Nesse sentido, procuram-se alternativas para reutilizar a areia de fundição em grandes quantidades, que permitam reduzir os custos de descarte pelas siderúrgicas e a utilização na construção de pavimentos fornece oportunidades para o reuso nas diferentes camadas estruturais. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o reaproveitamento da areia de fundição como material de construção em sub-bases e bases de rodovias, através de sua incorporação a solos argilosos lateríticos da região de Sertãozinho/SP, que tem grande produção de fundidos e, conseqüentemente, de resíduos e também carece de jazidas de solos arenosos para a construção de rodovias e vias urbanas. No estudo foi utilizada a técnica de montagem de solos artificiais a partir de dois solos lateríticos argilosos e do resíduo areia de fundição e da areia virgem. Os solos artificiais foram submetidos aos ensaios de: limite de liquidez e plasticidade, granulometria por peneiramento e sedimentação, mini-MCV, perda de massa por imersão, mini-CBR, expansão, contração, infiltrabilidade e permeabilidade em corpos-de-prova de dimensões reduzidas e na energia intermediária, CBR na energia intermediária e triaxial dinâmico. Para determinar a periculosidade do resíduo foram executados ensaios ambientais de massa bruta, lixiviação e solubilização. A partir dos resultados obtidos nestes ensaios foi possível analisar a variação das propriedades tecnológicas e ambientais dos solos em função do teor de areia de fundição adicionada. Os solos lateríticos argilosos com 60% de areia de fundição adicionada apresentaram propriedades mecânicas que atendem as especificações do DER-SP (1991) e do Manual de Pavimentação do DNIT (2006). Os ensaios ambientais mostraram que a areia de fundição, utilizada nesta pesquisa, apresenta características que se enquadram dentro dos parâmetros da CETESB, o que permite que o resíduo seja avaliado para seu reaproveitamento na construção de rodovias. Com base na análise dos resultados conclui-se que o resíduo areia de fundição é de uso promissor nas camadas de base e sub-base de rodovias de baixo volume de tráfego. / One of the biggest problems of the foundry industry is the solid residues production, constituted basically by sands. The use of additives and binders in the foundry process reduces the reuse of the sand and the remainder is discarded in industrial landfills or stockpiled on site, although the good quality of the sand as aggregate for manufactured products such as Portland cement, asphalts and geotechnical applications such as road bases, structural fills, embankments and manufactured soils. The foundry production, in year 2007, in Brazil, exceeded three millions tons, and it is had that for each ton of produced metal, a ton of foundry residue results approximately. The long term sustainability, economics and reuse practices suggest that alternative use practices must be done for the foundry sand and the roadways construction supply such opportunities. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the reuse of foundry sand as a construction material for road bases and sub-bases, trough its incorporation to clay lateritic soils from Sertaozinho, Sao Paulo state region. This region has a highly production of foundry metals and residues, and does not have natural sandy soils deposits for the construction of highways and urban roads. The technique used in this study was de soil assembly; foundry sand and virgin sand were mixed with two clay lateritic soils in different proportions. Tests were made in the soil-sand mixes to evaluate the sand addition influence in the mechanic soil behaviour, which are: liquid limit and plastic limit, granulometry, mini-MCV, immersion lost mass, mini-CBR at the intermediate energy, expansion, contraction, CBR at the intermediate energy, infiltrability, permeability and dynamic triaxial. Also, environment tests - leaching and solubility - were made to establish the hazard of the foundry sand. The results show that lateritic clay soils with 60% of foundry sand added has adequate mechanical properties to be used as base and sub-base material for low traffic pavements, according to the DER-SP(1991) specifications and the DNIT Manual Pavement (2006). The environment tests indicate that the foundry sand residue, used in this work, has promising use in road bases and sub-bases.

This paper is created based on the real situation in Armatmetal s.r.o. Based on customer requirements and possible reduction of finishing operations at the end of production in the foundry. The foundry technology of gravity casting into sand molds is changed to gravity casting into metal mold. To change technology at Armatmetal s.r.o. two types of castings were selected. The "Kloub 55 s vidlicí" casting was selected by the customer to test the new technology. Casting "Klínová koncovka KN10" was chosen by Armatmetal s.r.o. because of the structural design of the casting and the high repeatability of production. Castings are the subject of the paper. The diploma thesis includes methods of solving the elimination of foundry defects occurring on a complicated casting " Kloub 55 s vidlicí". The main aim of the thesis is to assess the technical-economic contribution of the change of foundry technology of the casting " Klínová koncovka KN10". The paper also includes a complex comparison of the current and new technology production with related problems and their solutions.
