Boundary-domain integral equation systems for the Stokes system with variable viscosity and diffusion equation in inhomogeneous media

Fresneda-Portillo, Carlos January 2016 (has links)
The importance of the Stokes system stems from the fact that the Stokes system is the stationary linearised form of the Navier Stokes system [Te01, Chapter1]. This linearisation is allowed when neglecting the inertial terms at a low Reinolds numbers Re << 1. The Stokes system essentially models the behaviour of a non - turbulent viscous fluid. The mixed interior boundary value problem related to the compressible Stokes system is reduced to two different BDIES which are equivalent to the original boundary value problem. These boundary-domain integral equation systems (BDIES) can be expressed in terms of surface and volume parametrix-based potential type operators whose properties are also analysed in appropriate Sobolev spaces. The invertibility and Fredholm properties related to the matrix operators that de ne the BDIES are also presented. Furthermore, we also consider the mixed compressible Stokes system with variable viscosity in unbounded domains. An analysis of the similarities and differences with regards to the bounded domain case is presented. Furthermore, we outline the mapping properties of the surface and volume parametrix-based potentials in weighted Sobolev spaces. Equivalence and invertibility results still hold under certain decay conditions on the variable coeffi cient The last part of the thesis refers to the mixed boundary value problem for the stationary heat transfer partial di erential equation with variable coe cient. This BVP is reduced to a system of direct segregated parametrix-based Boundary-Domain Integral Equations (BDIEs). We use a parametrix different from the one employed by Chkadua, Mikhailov and Natroshvili in the paper [CMN09]. Mapping properties of the potential type integral operators appearing in these equations are presented in appropriate Sobolev spaces. We prove the equivalence between the original BVP and the corresponding BDIE system. The invertibility and Fredholm properties of the boundary-domain integral operators are also analysed in both bounded and unbounded domains.

Role Conflict and Nonsexual Boundary Violations Among Correctional Officers

Ruggiero, Ronald M. 01 January 2014 (has links)
Role Conflict and Nonsexual Boundary Violations Among Correctional Officers by Ronald Ruggiero Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Human Service--Criminal Justice Walden University May 2014 Abstract Despite the growing presence of prisons in American society, little is known about challenges experienced in the job performed by correctional officers (COs); specifically, no research has investigated how their intermediary status between inmates and prison management can result in role conflict. This descriptive case study explored role conflict among 10 retired CO's and the presence of inmates who enter prison with a high public profile. It also examined and if nonsexual boundary violations are prompted by COs' role conflict. Role conflict theory provided the framework for the study. Open-ended interview questions were generated to address the study's research questions, which concerned the effects of role conflict on COs' perceptions of prison operations, safety, and employee morale. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed, then analyzed for recurring themes using open and axial coding. Three themes emerged from the analysis: high-profile inmates were described as more popular, more intelligent, and more manipulative than regular prisoners. These differences heightened the possibility for affinity between inmates and CO's, which contributed to perceptions of role conflict among the COs assigned to guard high-profile inmates. This study contributes to social change by providing insight into the challenges of COs' job roles that may influence the training and development for prison staff and management of high profile inmates.

Uniqueness of Positive Solutions for Elliptic Dirichlet Problems

Ali, Ismail, 1961- 12 1900 (has links)
In this paper we consider the question of uniqueness of positive solutions for Dirichlet problems of the form - Δ u(x)= g(λ,u(x)) in B, u(x) = 0 on ϑB, where A is the Laplace operator, B is the unit ball in RˆN, and A>0. We show that if g(λ,u)=uˆ(N+2)/(N-2) + λ, that is g has "critical growth", then large positive solutions are unique. We also prove uniqueness of large solutions when g(λ,u)=A f(u) with f(0) < 0, f "superlinear" and monotone. We use a number of methods from nonlinear functional analysis such as variational identities, Sturm comparison theorems and methods of order. We also present a regularity result on linear elliptic equation where a coefficient has critical growth.

Den gröna vetenskapen : En diskursanalys av den svenska odlingsrörelsens förhållande till vetenskap 1960-1980

Gordon Hultsjö, Joel January 2017 (has links)

Plebiscites

Fonseca Acosta, Rosa 05 1900 (has links)
This study investigates factors that can influence leaders to use plebiscites to settle territorial claims. A quick survey of the plebiscite literature shows that the method has been extensively mentioned in the legal, historical, and philosophical fields (mostly through case studies) but less so in political science. This thesis is the first attempt, to my knowledge, to quantitatively investigate the different factors that can influence a leader to use a plebiscite. Using the latest version of the ICOW dataset, I test political and economic theories to try to explain the variation in the decision outcome. This study includes the following variables: identity ties, economic strength, an interaction between identity ties and economic strength, internal constraints (regime type and violent interaction), and external constraints (membership to international organizations). The results suggest that identity ties offer the strongest explanation as to why leaders settle a territorial claim with a plebiscite. Plebiscites have been rarely used to settle territorial claims, but when used they tend to settle cases permanently. This thesis serves as an attempt to revive a method that while difficult to agree upon, can be successful in resolving territorial claims permanently, and more importantly peacefully.

Shocks, Shock-Boundary Layer Interaction, And Transonic Flutter

Karnick, Pradeepa Tumkur January 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Transonic utter is an aeroelastic instability characterized by part-chord shocks over an airfoil and single mode oscillations leading to a drop in the utter boundary. We present a numerical study that examines the influence of shocks, shock-boundary layer interactions, and three-dimensional flow features on the transonic utter boundary. Using energy concepts we show that shocks and shock-boundary layer interactions have a profound influence on the stability of an aeroelastic system. Viscosity stabilizes the aeroelastic system through thickness effects up-to the bottom of the transonic dip. Beyond, shock induced separation not only stalls the aeroelastic system, but also makes it oscillate about a new equilibrium position. In this region, where viscous effects are dominant, the inviscid utter boundary shows multiple utter points. Modal contributions to the response of the aeroelastic systems |viscous and inviscid | indicate that viscosity restricts higher mode participation. Restriction of higher modes by viscosity is responsible for the elimination of multiple utter points that are present in the inviscid case. Multiple forcing frequencies are observed in those regions of the utter boundary where viscous effects are dominant. Further, the shock dynamics exhibit shock-reversal where-in the shock motion predicted by the viscous simulation is 180_ out of phase relative to that of the inviscid case. At Mach numbers beyond the shock-stall region the shock moves close to the trailing edge of the airfoil, and inviscid and viscous simulations predict almost a similar utter boundary. Three-dimensional transonic flow structures on a finite-span wing aeroelastic model de-stabilizes it relative to an equivalent two-dimensional model.
