The partial oxidation of methane was investigated over Ni/MCM-41 catalysts modyfied or promoted by Ce or Pd. The Ni loading contents on Ni/MCM-41 catalysts were 5%, 10% and 20%. The contents of Pd, Ni and Ce on Pd/MCM-41, Pd-Ni/MCM- 41 and Ni/CeO2-MCM-41 were 1%, 10% and 10% respectively. All catalysts were characterized by XRD, XRF, DRS, XPS, SEM, specific area measurements, TPR, TPSR, XANES and were also evaluated on partial oxidation of methane through long- duration catalytic tests. The MCM-41 sieve showed high egree of pore-ordening, thermal stability and high specific surface area. According to DRX, XPS and DRS analyses, oxide phases were formed on the supported catalysts. TPR-H2 and TPSR-CH4 analyses showed that higher Ni loadings lead to higher reduction temperatures., probably due to the presence of a higher amount of Ni species. Perhaps, the introduction of Ce did not cause alterations in the species reduction temperature, what indicates that did not occur significant electronic changes in Ni properties. The Pd samples showed reduction peaks at 46ºC, which are attributed to the reduction of Pd species and to the formation of Pd hydrates. Negative peaks on these analyses are attributed to the decomposition of Pd hydrates. Pd, acting as an electronic promoter, favoured the reduction of Ni species and the production of syngas at a temperature range lower than the Ni-MCM-41, which was not promoted by Pd. H2 Chemisorption analyses indicated that the presence of Pd or Ce in Ni/MCM-41 catalysts, favours an increase of area and metallic dispersion and consequently, favours a decrease in the particle's size. TPSR-CH4 experiments with pre-oxidized and reduced samples indicated that the ideal phase for Ni to promote POM is metallic. However, the coexistence of metallic and oxidized phases on bimetallic catalysts also contributes to POM. TPSR and XANESexperiments showed that the presence of Pd or Ce inhibts the reoxidation of Ni species during the catalytic reaction, favouring the presence of metallic Ni in situ. Catalytic tests on Ni/MCM-41 catalysts showed that conversions to CH4 and selectivity to syngas were high. These characteristics show that Ni/MCM-41 catalysts are promising for POM. The addition of Ce on Ni/MCM-41 has increased the stability of it during the catalytic test compared with the non-addicted Ce Ni/MCM-41 catalyst. Probably, it is due to the oxidation of the deposited species over the catalytic surface. Therefore, there are indicative that the Ni--Ce interaction has conducted instead of Ni/MCM-41, parallel reactions, decreasing the H2 selectivity. TPSR-CH4 According to catalitic tests, Pd catalyst was not active for POM, but, TPSR results showed that it has generated syngas at a temperature range lower than Ni/MCM-41. Based on these results, was inferred that the catalytic species, during the catalytic test, could have suffered reactions in situ, generating other species not as active as the formers. Even though the bimetallic catalyst favours the production of syngas at low temperatures, this catalyst favoured most the occurances of parallel reactions, specially hydrogenation reactions that produce not determined substances during the tests. The TOF values indicated that Pd-Ni and Ni-CeO2 interactions on Pd-Ni/MCM-41 e Ni/CeO2-MCM-41 led to the formation of less active catalytic species for OPM than the species formed on Ni/MCM-41.
