Evaluation of epoxy grout for roller path repairing

Manitoba Hydro owns and operates 12 river hydroelectric generating stations ans two major control structures. The structures control the flow of water almost exclusively with gate wheels. It is important for the roller paths to remain true to allow uniform distribution of the hydraulic load on the gates to the gate wheels. Manitoba Hydro is currently replacing the distorted steel roller paths at its MacArthur Generating Station. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physical properties of high strength proprietary grouts to determine their adequacy for use beneath new roller paths of water control gates which have unusual spacial constraints. Two full size mockups of a portion of an existing guide, with a steel overlay, were utilized in the experimental study. To investigate the stress-strain distribution in the mockup under specific loading condition, strain gauges were installed on both of the web sides of the embedded steel I-beam: one group of gauges was located just below the flange, the others were located along the mid-hight of the beam web. Force gauges were inserted to measure the pressure between the thin grout layer bottom and the top of the embedded I-beam. A special LVDT (linear variable differential transducer) assembly was made to measure the maximum displacement of grout layer. Mockup samples were subjected to static and cyclic loading procedures at two designated loading points. The grout cylindrical creep tests were conducted at the same time. It included tests at room temperature and at the elevated temperature of 50°C. The initial sustained load was 50% of the ultimate compression strength of the grout cylinder (3"x6"). Once the creep development was observed to become constant, the sustained load was raised up to 70% of ultimate strength and held constant until the end of the test. The test results indicate that the strength of the proposed grouting material is adequate to resist the required load, both statically and cyclically. Temperature has no significant effects on this specific loading situation. The proposed grouting method is proven to be simple, economic and efficient, therefore, the technique is suitable for roller path repairing.

The forts on Hadrian's Wall : a comparative analysis of the form and construction of some buildings

The thesis undertakes a comparative analysis of some of the stone buildings within the forts of the completed concept of Hadrian's Wall. The buildings included are the principia, granaries, gates and barracks. Each building type has been measured and inspected on site, or the data obtained from archival or documentary sources. As a background to the study the forts are set in the context of the Wall, examining its structure, garrisons and taking an overview of the archaeological record, additionally general Roman building techniques are reviewed. The selected buildings within each fort are then discussed and compared with other buildings on the Wall, or on other military sites. In this way then- form, dimensional analysis, construction sequence and building techniques are considered and discussed. Common features and major differences are highlighted in the forts and the buildings, and comparisons drawn. Some tentative links are made as to the builders of the forts and the probable use of standard units of measure. Reconstructions of the buildings are put forward, taking into account the archaeological evidence and architectural considerations. Supporting information supplied in the appendices includes data relating to each fort as well as schedules of dimensions of the buildings, together with comparative tables. A catalogue of the decorated and moulded stonework sets out and discusses the stonework from the various buildings.

General Amplitude Modulation for Robust Trapped-Ion Entangling Gates

Trapped-ion systems are a promising route toward the realization of both near-term and universal quantum computers. However, one of the pressing challenges is improving the fidelity of two-qubit entangling gates. These operations are often implemented by addressing individual ions with laser pulses using the M\o lmer-S\o rensen (MS) protocol. Amplitude modulation (AM) is a well-studied extension of this protocol, where the amplitude of the laser pulses is controlled as a function of time. We present an analytical study of AM using a Fourier series expansion so that the laser amplitude may be represented as a general continuous function. Varying the Fourier coefficients used to generate the pulse produces trade-offs between the laser power, gate time, and fidelity. We specifically study gate-timing errors, and we have shown that the sensitivity of the fidelity to these errors can be improved without a significant increase in the average laser power or the gate time. We plot atomic population vs. time for both the traditional MS protocol and the protocol with AM, highlighting the increased robustness of the AM gates. Our central result is that we improve the leading order dependence on gate timing errors from $\order{\Delta t^2}$ to $\order{\Delta t^6}$, and the protocol allows for arbitrarily high orders of scaling to be achieved in principle.

This research paper surveys the types of automatic gates, their advantages and drawbacks. New folding gates are analyzed; their moment of inertia during the movement is several times less than of common gates of the same width. Vibrations of common and folding automatic gates are also analyzed in the research. During the experimental survey a coefficient of tightness has been determined. Computer based program has been used for the analytical analyses. The most proper masses of construction knots and most optimum coefficients of tightness and suppression are chosen according to the optimum opening speed of the gates.

Ralph F. Gates was governor of Indiana from 1945 to 1949 when events following the end of World War II forced Hoosiers to make many crucial decisions concerning the role of state government. Gates was the first Republican governor of Indiana since the Depression and he was one of the few Hoosier governors to have effective majorities in two successive General Assemblies. This study analyzes the achievements of the Gates administration by focusing upon Gates' pledges in his 1944 campaign and his success in implementing those pledges.Campaign press releases and the 1944 Indianapolis newspapers identified the issues Gates had stressed during the campaign. Gates emphasized the need for state and federal cooperation in helping veterans adjust to peacetime conditions; industrial expansion to assure continued economic growth and prosperity; additional personnel and facilities for Indiana's public education and public health programs so as to furnish expanded services; and efficient and economic administration of state government.Official state documents furnished information concerning the achievements of the Gates administration. The single most important achievement in the area of veterans' affairs was the creation of the Department of Veterans' Affairs. This new state department helped approximately 300,000 Hoosier veterans adjust to civilian life.Several new state agencies encouraged industrial expansion and aided in providing jobs for the returning veterans. The Department of Commerce and Public Relations helped attract to Indiana 300 new industries which employed nearly 30,000 Hoosiers. A reorganized State Highway Commission spent $78,000,000 in three years to improve the state highway system. To help relieve the increasing congestion on the state's highways, the new Aeronautics Commission of Indiana sought to develop a state-wide system of aviation.Indiana's growth and prosperity was ultimately reliant upon a strong educational system. To help attract qualified teachers, the state's minimum salary schedule was amended so that a beginning teacher could earn $2,400 for a nine month school year. The state almost doubled its amount of local school support from $24,700,000 in 1943-1944 to $48,800,000 in 1947-1948. Local school districts were given additional powers of taxation. The State Board of Education was reorganized and given additional powers concerning textbook adoptions and federal school lunch programs. Finally, the state appropriated approximately $45,000,000 to help the four state colleges and universitiesprovide for increased enrollments.In the area of public health, the State Board of Health was reorganized and an Indiana Council for Mental Health was created. The licensing of all hospitals in the state was required for the first time and a coordinated plan for hospital construction was developed. Over $8,000,000 was appropriated to construct new public health facilities, and the establishment of full-time local health offices was encouraged through legislation authorizing adjacent counties or cities and counties to combine to offer full-time health offices.Although they increased state services, Gates and his Republican associates managed to keep the budget balanced by improving governmental efficiency and raising taxes on alcoholic beverages and cigarettes. His achievements establish that Gates did indeed accomplish what he had pledged in the areas of veterans' affairs, economic readjustment, public education, public health, and fiscal and administrative affairs.

Two different schemes that implement fermionic quantum computation, are proposed. The first scheme compares fermionic gates with Boolean gates, and leads to novel electronic devices that simulate fermionic gates. The second scheme uses a well known map between fermionic and multi-qubit systems, to simulate fermionic gates within multi-qubit systems.
