Transient microscopy of primary atomization in gasoline direct injection sprays

Understanding the physics governing primary atomization of high pressure fuel sprays is of paramount importance to accurately model combustion in direct injection engines. The small length and time scales of features that characterize this process falls below the resolution power of typical grids in CFD simulations, which necessitates the inclusion of physical models (sub-models) to account for unresolved physics. Unfortunately current physical models for fuel spray atomization used in engine CFD simulations are based on significant empirical scaling because there is a lack of experimental data to understand the governing physics. The most widely employed atomization sub-model used in current CFD simulations assumes the spray atomization process to be dominated by aerodynamically-driven surface instabilities, but there has been no quantitative experimental validation of this theory to date. The lack of experimental validation is due to the high spatial and temporal resolutions required to simultaneously to image these instabilities, which is difficult to achieve. The present work entails the development of a diagnostic technique to obtain high spatial and temporal resolution images of jet breakup and atomization in the near nozzle region of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) sprays. It focuses on the optical setup required to achieve maximum illumination, image contrast, sharp feature detection, and temporal tracking of interface instabilities for long-range microscopic imaging with a high-speed camera. The resolution and performance of the imaging system is characterized by evaluating its modulation transfer function (MTF). The setup enabled imaging of GDI sprays for the entire duration of an injection event (several milliseconds) at significantly improved spatial and temporal resolutions compared to historical spray atomization imaging data. The images show that low to moderate injection pressure sprays can be visualized with a high level of detail and also enable the tracking of features across frames within the field of view (FOV)

An optical investigation of DISI engine combustion, fuel spray and emissions at cold-start temperatures

Particulate number (PN) standards in current and future emissions legislation pose a challenge for designers and calibrators during the warm-up phases of cold direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engines. To achieve catalyst light-off conditions in the shortest time, engine strategies are often employed that inherently use more fuel to attain higher exhaust temperatures. These can lead to the generation of locally fuel-rich regions within the combustion chamber and hence the formation and emission of particulates. To meet these emissions requirements, further understanding of the DISI in-cylinder processes during cold-start are required. This thesis investigates the effect of cooling an optical research engine to temperatures as low as -7°C, one of the legislative test conditions. A high-speed 9 kHz optical investigation of the in-cylinder combustion and fuel spray along with in-cylinder pressure measurements was completed with the engine motored and fired at 1500 rpm during combustion conditions that were essentially homogeneous and stoichiometric. Results showed significant differences between the flame growth structures at various operating temperature conditions with the notable presence of fuel-rich regions, which are understood to be prominent areas of particulate formation. Measured engine performance parameters such as indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) and mass fraction burned (MFB) times correlated with the observed differences in combustion characteristics and flame growth speed. It was shown that flash boiling of the fuel spray was present in the fully heated engine case and significantly reduced the penetration of the spray plume and the likelihood of piston crown and cylinder liner impingement. The flow and combustion processes of a transient production cold start-up strategy were analysed using high-speed particle image velocimetry (HSPIV). Results highlighted a broad range of flame structures and contrasting flame stoichiometry occurring at different times in the start-up process. Turbulent flow structures were identified that have an effect on the fuel spray development and combustion process as well as providing a path for cold-start emissions reduction. PN and transient hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were measured at cold conditions to further elucidate the effect of operating temperature and correlate emissions data with in-cylinder measurements. A clear link between the quantity and size range of particulate and HC emissions and operating temperature was shown and the precise in-cylinder location of HC emissions, caused by fuel impingement, was inferred from the HC emissions data.

Political, environmental and marketing factors mean there is a global requirement to produce vehicles with improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. This thesis shows that the gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine will continue to form a significant portion of the automotive propulsion market in the short to medium term. However, to reach future targets continuous development and optimisation of these engines is essential. The introduction to this thesis discusses the role some of the key aspects of GDI engine design have on overall engine efficiency. The fuel spray is shown to be a key contributor to this, as it is a primary driver in the fuel/air mixing process, and therefore intrinsically linked to the combustion efficiency.

Evaluation of camshaft control strategies for a GCI engine using a multidisciplinary optimisation framework

No / This paper presents a calibration optimization study for a Gasoline Direct Injection engine based on a multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) framework. The paper presents the experimental framework used for the GDI engine mapping, followed by an analysis of the calibration optimization problem. The merits of the MDO approach to calibration optimization are discussed in comparison with a conventional two-stage approach based on local trade-off optimization analysis, focused on a representative emissions drive cycle (NEDC) and limited part load engine operation. The benefits from using the MDO optimisation framework are further illustrated with a study of relative effectiveness of different camshaft timing control strategies (twin independent Versus fixed timing, exhaust only, inlet only and fixed overlap / dual equal) for the reference GDI engine based on the part load test data. The main conclusion is that the MDO structure offers an effective framework for the GDI steady state calibration optimization analysis.

Insbesondere bei SOAP wird näher darauf eingegangen. Neben den OWS besteht auch die Möglichkeit Geo-Datenbanken in Diensteketten einfließen zu lassen. Dafür werden exemplarisch Dienste aufgesetzt, die dies ermöglichen. Weiterhin werden die Benutzerschnittstellen von Web Services (und auch Diensteketten) untersucht. Die Option eines Clients mittels Scriptsprachen wird beschrieben. Dabei erwies sich PHP am geeignetsten. Auf diese Weise kann für jede Dienstekette eine dynamische Webseite gestaltet werden, die eine graphische Schnittstelle für den Nutzer bietet.

Real-time 2d/3d Display Of Dted Maps And Evaluation Of Interpolation Algorithms

In Geographic Information System (GIS) applications, aster data constitutes one of the major data types. The displaying of the raster data has an important part in GIS applications. Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED) is one of the raster data types, which is used as the main data source in this thesis. The DTED data is displayed on the screen as digital images as a pixel value, which is represented in gray scale, corresponding to an elevation (texel). To draw the images, the texel values are mostly interpolated in order to perform zoom-in and/or zoom-out operations on the concerned area. We implement and compare four types of interpolation methods, nearest neighbor, bilinear interpolation, and two new proposed interpolation methods (1) 4-texel weighted average and (2) 8-texel weighted average. The real-time graphical display, with zoom-in/zoom-out capabilities, has also been implemented by buffering DTED data in memory and using a C++ clas that manages graphical operations (zoom-in, zoom-out, and 2D, 3D isplay) by using Windows GDI+ and OpenGL graphic ibraries resulting in 30-40 framesper-second for one grid of DTED Level 0 data.

Methodology of Measuring Particulate Matter Emissions from a Gasoline Direct Injection Engine

A gasoline direct injection engine was set-up to operate with a dynamometer in a test cell. Test cycle and emissions measurement procedures were developed for evaluating the regulated and non-regulated gaseous emissions. Equipment and techniques for particulate matter measurements were adapted for use with the gasoline direct injection engine. The particulate matter emissions produced by the engine were compared between two different fuels; gasoline and E10 (10% ethanol and 90% gasoline). The gaseous emissions generated by the engine when it was run on gasoline and E30 (30% ethanol and 70% gasoline) were also compared. Particle number decreased with E10 for hot start conditions, while the opposite was observed for cold start conditions. Particulate matter emissions were found to track with acetylene and ethylene emissions.
