Characterization of organic contamination of groundwater in a mining area, Globe, Arizona

Organic contamination is associated with inorganic contamination in a plume resulting from acidic mine drainage water in an area of copper mining, Globe, Arizona. The level of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is low, but is eight times the 0.5 mgC/l background. The source is probably organic reagents used in mineral processing. DOC fractionation using XAD-8 resin sorption chromatography gave a hydrophobic acid fraction (humic substances) of 1.0 mgC/l, and the hydrophobic neutral fraction was also anomalous, being as high as 49% of DOC. The fractionation data matched that for a waste-solution lake, believed to be a source of the aquifer contamination. Loss of DOC is occurring downgradient in the aquifer, based on comparison of DOC/chloride ratios. Loss occurs as the pH increases to over 4 or 5. Sorption onto metal precipitates being formed, particularly of the hydrophilic fraction, may be occurring.

O teatro não pode ser traduzido apenas como um texto literário, ele é a junção da obra dramatúrgica com tudo aquilo que pode ser colocado sobre o palco. Partindo desse ponto de vista, ao entendermos como eram os cenários de Shakespeare na sua origem, melhor interpretaríamos o real significado de sua obra, facilitando assim a sua compreensão e gerando mais uma ferramenta de trabalho para que possamos recriar seus textos. Acreditando nisso, baseamos este estudo nos elementos práticos inseridos na realização teatral do século XVI e XVII na Inglaterra. Passamos por uma breve concepção histórica da época, visto que o teatro nunca deixa de ser um espelho do que acontece na realidade do cotidiano; pela história do teatro inglês para entendermos sua evolução, culminando na grande era de ouro, no caso o teatro elizabethano; fomos para os princípios práticos primeiramente destrinchando o edifício teatral elizabethano na sua concepção de semi-arena e nos seus recursos técnicos e posteriormente enfatizando o Globe Theatre, teatro do grande dramaturgo em questão; e finalmente tentamos elaborar uma idéia do que teria sido a cenografia no palco de Shakespeare. / The theater cannot only be translated as a literary text, it is the joining of the dramatic work with everything that can placed on the stage. Leaving from this point of view, while understanding how the sceneries of Shakespeare were in its origin, better we would interpret the meant reality of his work, if we made easy so his understanding and if we produced one more tool of work so that we can recreate his texts. Believing in that, we base this study on the practical elements inserted in the theatrical realization of the century XVI and XVII in England. We pass for one brief historical conception of the time, since the theater never stops being a mirror of what it happens in fact of the daily life; for the history of the English theater to understand its evolution, culminating in the golden age, in this case the Elizabethan theater; we were for the practical beginnings firstly when is unravelling the Elizabethan theatrical building in its conception of arena and in its technical resources and after when there is emphasizing the Globe Theatre, theater of the great playwright in question; and finally we try to elaborate an idea of what it would have been the set design in the stage of Shakespeare.

Specifically, I examine if national culture influences project performance and which cultural dimensions affect project performance. Methodologically, I conducted an empirical study, based in a final sample of 271 project managers and project occurred in 39 different countries. The results showed that cultural dimensions, power distance and future orientation have a negative impact in project performance, and gender egalitarianism has a positive impact in project performance. This study has a theoretical and practical contribution. This study is intended, for one hand, to contribute to the advance of literature in project management and on the other, help project managers preparing for cultural diversity, increasingly common in the projects. / Neste estudo analisei a influência da cultura nacional no desempenho dos projetos. Especificamente, examinei se a cultura nacional influencia o desempenho dos projetos e que dimensões culturais afetam o desempenho dos projetos. Metodologicamente, realizei um estudo empírico, com uma amostra final de 271 gestores de projetos, e projetos ocorridos em 39 países diferentes. Os resultados mostraram que as dimensões culturais, distância ao poder e orientação futura têm um impacto negativo no desempenho dos projetos, e que o igualitarismo de gêneros tem um impacto positivo no desempenho dos projetos. Este estudo tem uma contribuição teórica e prática. Com este estudo pretendo, por um lado, contribuir para o avanço da literatura em Gestão de projetos e, por outro, ajudar os gestores de projetos a se prepararem para a diversidade cultural, cada vez mais frequente nos projetos.

Expatriates in Leadership Positions in Sweden

Even though studies of expatriates from Nordic countries have been conducted, qualitative data on expatriates in Sweden has barely been generated. This research is the first explorative study within this context. The authors have chosen a qualitative approach, interviewing both assigned and self-initiated expatriate leaders currently working in Sweden. The data is presented in the form of five case studies including three European and two non-European citizens. The cross-case analysis confirms the GLOBE study’s main finding that leadership effectiveness is contextual. It has become clear that expatriate leaders face several challenges in the Swedish business culture. These are mainly related to the speed of working, the need for consensus in the decision-making process, and the conflict avoiding tendency. These drivers demonstrate that there are certain cultural aspects unique to Sweden. Expatriate leaders need to be flexible in adapting their leadership style and be engaging with their followers in order to work successfully in Sweden.

L'Afrique du Sud post-apartheid : le temps de la reconstruction, des réformes et des mutations à travers le Globe and Mail de Toronto et le Times de Londres (1994-2004)

La décennie 1994-2004 est d’une importance majeure pour l’Afrique du Sud nouvellement démocratique. Au cours de cette période, le pays jette les bases de sa reconstruction à travers la mise en place de réformes politiques, économiques et sociales afin de combattre les méfaits de quarante années d’apartheid et de poser les jalons de son développement. Dans ce contexte, les médias internationaux ont porté une attention particulière à ces nombreux changements, plus spécifiquement la presse écrite canadienne et britannique, en particulier le Globe and Mail et le Times. Notre mémoire s’intéresse donc au traitement fait par ces deux quotidiens, l’un torontois l’autre londonien, de la reconstruction sud-africaine et ce, à travers l’analyse de thèmes précis et de ses réformes marquantes. Il sera plus spécifiquement question des réformes politiques et constitutionnelles avec la figure de Nelson Mandela, héros de la lutte contre l’apartheid, père de la « nation arc-en-ciel » ainsi que celle de son successeur à la présidence sud-africaine en 1999, Thabo Mbéki. Aussi, la Commission Vérité et Réconciliation et la nouvelle Constitution, toutes deux mises en place durant l’année 1996 sont majeures puisqu’elles dictent la nouvelle identité donnée au pays. Les réformes socioéconomiques de la reconstruction ont également attirés l’attention de nos deux journaux. Particulièrement, nous analyserons les points de vue de ceux-ci concernant le Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) ainsi que de la « discrimination positive » et du Black Economic Empowerment (BEE), deux mesures censées contribuer à l’amélioration de la qualité de vie de la population et à effacer les profondes inégalités socioéconomiques léguées par l’apartheid. Or, cet espoir d’une vie meilleure laisse rapidement place à un désenchantement. La forte criminalité et la dramatique explosion du VIH-sida dans une nouvelle Afrique du Sud qui cherche à se reconstruire a beaucoup retenu l’attention du Globe and Mail et du Times. Ces deux défis de taille s’avèrent être l’envers de la médaille du miracle sud-africain et ne manquent pas d’attirer l’attention des deux journaux, mettant clairement en évidence les « ratés » socioéconomiques » de la reconstruction.

Madeirans in Cape Town: Immigration documentation, marriage and settlement, 1900s to the 1970s

Magister Artium - MA / This thesis traces the immigration of Madeirans to Cape Town and their settlement from the 1900s to the 1970s. It focuses on how exclusionary legislation from 1902 affected Madeiran entry, how they managed to circumvent it and the documents required for immigration over this long period. Particular attention is drawn to the role of women in the migration process, the nature of the households and the impact of women in shaping a settled Madeiran population. The thesis examines the role Portuguese organisations played and continue to play in maintaining cultural and religious values and the extent to which these values have been retained in the second and later generations. This thesis seeks to ask to what extent the Madeiran migration experience bears commonalities with other groups, particularly Indians, or whether unique features are discernible. Indians and Madeirans were both regarded as ‘undesirable’ and subject to literacy tests, domicile certificates, permits and certificates of identity. Illegal entry was common to both groups. Chain migration featured in their decision to leave the poverty of their homeland. The split-household was the dominant household form. Once settled, Indian and Madeiran wives played a key role in the business and in passing on their cultural and religious values. Both groups established cultural organisations. Despite these commonalities, Madeiran migration displayed certain unique features compared to Indians.

The results show total CEO compensation to be negatively related to institutional collectivism, power distance and performance orientation.
