The stories told : indigenous art collections, museums, and national identities

Dickenson, Rachelle. January 2005 (has links)
The history of collection at the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, illustrates concepts of race in the development of museums in Canada from before Confederation to today. Located at intersections of Art History, Museology, Postcolonial Studies and Native Studies, this thesis uses discourse theory to trouble definitions of nation and problematize them as inherently racial constructs wherein 'Canadianness' is institutionalized as a dominant white, Euro-Canadian discourse that mediates belonging. The recent reinstallations of the permanent Canadian historical art galleries at the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts are significant in their illustration of contemporary colonial collection practices. The effectiveness of each installation is discussed in relation to the demands and resistances raised by Indigenous and non-Native artists and cultural professionals over the last 40 years, against racist treatment of Indigenous arts.

Escola de arte Brasil, depois de dois pontos uma experiência artística (e social) depois de 1968 / Escola de Arte Brasil: (two points). An artistic and social experience after 1968

Thais Assunção Santos 04 April 2012 (has links)
This work is about Escola de arte Brasil: (two points), one institution founded by four artistis from São Paulo: Luiz Paulo Baravelli, Frederico Nasser, Carlos Fajardo and José Resende, that before studied with Wesley Duke Lee. The Escola existed between 1970 and 1974 in São Paulo. The four founders were on the 60s architecture students; three of them participated of Rex Gallery & Sons, created by Geraldo de Barros, Nelson Leirner and Duke Lee. The gallery got them in touch whit the Brazilian artistic environment and pleading, specially with the scene from São Paulo. The conceptual assumptions and the social experience of the Escola Brasil: presents points of intersection with artistic (and cultural) experiences and projects situated between the decades of 50s and the 70s, two highlights of the Brazilian modernization process; and this is the temporal axis, historical, that this work try to situate critically its existence. The main links of relation between the Escola and this temporal axis are the tunings that presents, both from the point of view of artistic production as the teaching experience, with the constructive project and with the Tropicalismo.

Výtvarná scéna ve Zlíně v šedesátých letech / Art Scene of the Sixties in Zlin

Drábková, Veronika January 2017 (has links)
This Master thesis with a title of "The Art Scene in Zlín in Sixties" considers Zlín's culture of the era on the institutional level. It consists of three main parts including the issues of (1.) the Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín (called Gottwaldov during the era of communist regime in Czechoslovakia from 1949 to 1989), (2.) The Gallery Dílo Gottwaldov, a branch of ČFVU (the Czech Archive of Art), and finally (3.) The Design Competition for Theater of Workers. This thesis aims to describe foundation, development, work and exhibition activities for both galleries. The chapter about the Regional Gallery also pursues acquisition activity of the Institution. A part of the thesis dealing with a competition to decorate Theater of Workers describes development of the competition since its manifestation, follows the announcement of a winning designs and considers the official opening of the building as well. The competition was launched for the construction of monumental sculpture in front of the Theater, the monumental mosaic for the front lobby of the Theater, sculpture in the fountain in a park behind the Theater and decorative textile curtain for the stage.

The student-artist based tour: determining gallery teaching practice beneficial for an art museum tour centered on students as artists

Smith, Lindsey Scott 19 October 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to provide the fields of art education and museum education with gallery teaching practice that uses students’ prior knowledge of art making as the means to guide interpretation of art in the museum. This study develops touring methods that maintain the identity of the student artists in the context of adult artists’ works in the museum. This investigation is an action-based research study of how a museum educator can develop touring practice to use art objects to enable students to think reflectively on their art making. The results of this study identify the characteristics of an art museum tour that is centered on students and art making. This study demonstrates a framework for teaching in the museum that incorporates constructivist learning theory, social and active learning, a concepts-based approach to art learning, and develops student cognition. / text

Éléments de dynamique du laser pour l'élaboration d'une source micro-onde miniaturisée sur la base de la double émission monomode d'un laser à mode de galerie / Laser dynamics studies for simultaneous oscillation of wavelength-tunable singlemode lasers using whispering gallery mode resonator

Ceppe, Jean-Baptiste 29 June 2018 (has links)
This thesis presents the studies of whispering gallery mode laser dynamics in order to realize a micro-wave source using simultaneous oscillations in a unique whispering gallery mode micro-laser. We show experimental results on the relative intensity noise (RIN) of a Whispering Gallery Mode Laser in ZBLALiP glass doped with Er3+ ions. Besides the pure laser specifications, the RIN spectrum gives informations about the dynamics inside the cavity, such as photon lifetime, effective pumping rate and noise sources. Moreover, we have shown that a single-mode emission comes with the presence of multiple harmonics of the relaxation frequency. The theoretical model taking account the non-linear coupling between photons and atoms allows us to determine the mode volume of the whispering gallery mode in laser regime, which is quite difficult to evaluate in this regime. On the other hand, we have studied the laser dynamics in an industrial IOG-1 glass codoped with Yb3+/Er3+ ions where the signature of a modal coupling, induced by Rayleigh scattering, lies in the RIN spectrum. In this particular case, the two coupled modes operate above threshold. The observed behavior is compared with thoses of a solid state gyro-laser.

Emergence Of Art Galleries In Ankara A Case Study Of Three Pionerring Galleries In The 1950s

Onsal, Basak 01 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis attempts to analyze the emergence of private art galleries in Turkey by focusing on specifically the three art galleries, namely Gallery Milar, Helikon Society&rsquo / s Gallery, and Society of Artlovers&rsquo / Gallery that were opened in Ankara during 1950s. To this aim, both the artistic movements and governmental policies regarding the artistic field are mentioned from a historical point of view. Interviews, analysis of relevant literature, examining periodical magazines, and daily newspapers constitute the main sources of data collecting. In conclusion, in the light of our findings it is decided that the formation of art market and emergence of art galleries in Turkey have quite different characteristics from the western example as a result of its own social, cultural and economic dynamics in the historical frame.
