_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This research aims to constitute critical notes on the novels Nobody writes to the Colonel (1957) and One hundred years of solitude (1967), by Gabriel García Márquez, from the perspective of idealization of modernity. This study seeks to define, structurally, the perception of peripheral condition through two characters of these works of García Márquez. Furthermore it will examine the intended similarity between the wife of the colonel in Nobody writes to the Colonel and the character of Ursula Iguarán in One Hundred Years of Solitude. The goal is to understand how characters from different stories, aesthetically structured in the manner of magical realism, but so different in form and content, can be understood in terms of one another. Hence It is a comparison of the dialectic between the wife of the retired colonel, who in the midst of insights and the bureaucracy of her self-consciousness, devotes itself to the selfishness, and Ursula Iguarán, the matriarch sentenced to one hundred years of solitude, that, despite several differences and distances, are close to the intention or not, catastrophic or not, the ideological justification of class. Eventually it will ask "Which aspects in the early work of Gabriel García Márquez, namely Nobody writes to the colonel, an elaborated narration without too many formal and stylistic pretensions, converge to his latter One hundred years of solitude, probably one of the world's most read Latin American novel with the author's stylistic art of writing, valued and praised in world literature, both pieces having achieved extraordinary power of expression and magnitude?".

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This dissertation discusses some short stories written by the Brazilian writer Murilo Rubião, focusing on the fantastic feature held by those narratives, in order to demonstrate the way they represent the Brazilian social life in their literary form, considering both that Rubião’s work is
articulated to a national literary system and the relation his stories have to the Latin American production in general. Regarding the importance fantastic narrative has inside a Latin
American context, this analysis pursues the understanding of at least two different common currents of fantastic literature occurring in this bloc: the Modern Fantastic and the Magical
Realism. In order to better understand each genre and their importance to literature in Latin America, this research includes the analysis of two short stories by Murilo Rubião, which are related to Modern Fantastic, as well as two short stories by Gabriel García Márquez, representing the Magical Realism. Thereby, this dissertation is composed by a general perspective of Fantastic Literature’s theory, along with a brief discussion on the relationship
between History and Latin American literatures, followed by a punctual presentation of Murilo Rubião’s work and, finally, a comparative analysis of Rubião and García Márquez short stories, as mentioned before. Those steps aim to provide a better comprehension of what approximates and differentiates the genres pointed above. It should also help the reader to identify what includes Brazil in this Latin American setting, at the same time it highlights the importance of avoiding a simplistic and generalized view of distinct national literatures
written in Latin American countries.

Suivi de BorradosMoreau-Leduc, Alexie 13 December 2023 (has links)
This research-creation paper deals with the functions of the imaginary, especially in the face of different constraints to which the narrative, the characters or even the author may be subjected. The first part studies Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude and the role that the imaginary plays in it. Specifically, we will focus the research around the character of Aureliano Babilonia, the last representative of the Buendía family. The second part, entitled Borrados, features a group of children in a detention center on the border of the United States and Mexico. In reaction to the boredom and difficulties that their life in captivity brings, Pepe, the main character, takes the reins of the narrative by creating an imaginary world where the children take refuge. At the same time, the characters tell each other stories from a found book, whose elements gradually influence their world. Imagination thus plays a main role in the daily life of these characters, who are confined in a closed situation.

Creating Eternity: The Coesistence of Time in One Hundred Years of SolitudeCook, Kelli Cargile 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the coexistence of time in Gabriel Garcfa Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude as a cause of the supernatural events, the hereditary memory, and the solitude and to examine the effects of this mythical time frame on character development, plot, narrative structure, and theme. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the parchments as creators of mythical time. The second, third, and fourth chapters investigate the effects of this unconventional time. Supernatural events, clairvoyance, and solitude are all examined as effects. The final chapter correlates the writing of the parchments with the writing of the novel and explains the effects of unconventional time on the reader. Thus, this thesis illustrates how the coexistence of time functions of two levels: the level of the parchments and the level of the novel.
