Development, characterization, and modeling of an electronic particulate matter sensor for internal combustion engines

Diller, Timothy Thomas 02 June 2010 (has links)
U.S. Federal regulations requiring on-board diagnostics of diesel particulate filters have created a demand for compact, inexpensive, fast, and accurate sensors for measuring the particulate matter (PM) content of diesel exhaust. An electronic sensor capable of measuring the carbonaceous fraction (soot) of PM has been developed at The University of Texas at Austin. The behavior and performance of this sensor was characterized in both an older style non-emission controlled diesel engine and a modern heavy-duty diesel certified in 2008 to meet current federal emissions standards. The ability of the sensor to detect particulates at the regulated level of 15 mg/bhp-hr downstream of a leaking particulate filter was demonstrated. Under optimal conditions, the sensor was shown to have a resolution of 0.003 mg/bhp-hr, or 0.005 mg/m3. The sensor operated by measuring the flux of charged particles, ions, and electrons to an electrode immersed in an exhaust gas flow. Two distinct modes of operation were demonstrated. In the first, the sensor detected particles carrying residual charge from the combustion process. In this mode, the sensor was shown to be relatively insensitive to particle morphology and to be sensitive to exhaust gas velocity. In the second, charge carriers (particles, electrons, and ions) were created in the strong electric field produced by a second electrode at high voltage. In this mode, the sensor was found to be relatively insensitive to exhaust gas velocity, but quite sensitive to the orientation of the sensor in the exhaust flow. The size and number density of the particles was found to have a strong influence on the sensor sensitivity: as number density increased with increasing load or decreasing EGR rate, so did sensor sensitivity. Thus, as changes in engine operating condition affect particle morphology, the behavior of the sensor changes. A numerical model of the discharge mechanism in the form of an atmospheric pressure glow discharge was implemented to model the charge creation and transport. The model accurately predicted the nanoamp-level electrode currents produced in a real sensor to within a half order of magnitude with no empirical fits. The model tended to over-predict the sensitivity of sensor output to applied voltage but matched the observed sensitivity within an order of magnitude. Due to the lack of modeling flow field effects it predicted a 250% increase in sensitivity for a gap width reduced by 50% where a comparison of real sensors showed a decrease in sensitivity of 25% with a 50% reduction in gap width. / text

Air-water experiments in a vertical DN200-pipe

Beyer, M., Lucas, D., Kussin, J., Schütz, P. 07 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The extensive experimental results presented in this report provide a high-quality database for air-/water flows in a vertical pipe with a nominal diameter of 200 mm. This database can be used for the development and validation of CFD-like models for two-phase flows, e.g. for bubble coalescence and fragmentation. In particular, the investigations aim on the evolution of the two-phase flow along the pipe height. Therefore, up to 18 single measurements with varying distances between the gas injection and measurement plane were realised for each of the 92 combinations of gas and water flow rates. The pressure at the position of the activated gas injection was kept constant at 0.25 MPa(a). This boundary condition has the advantage that the measured data represent exactly the evolution of the flow along the pipe, i.e. they reflect a configuration at which the gas injection is at a fixed height position, while the measurement plane varies. Important results of this test series are time averaged radial profiles of the gas fraction, and the gas velocity, as well as the time and cross-section averaged bubble size distributions. Furthermore, gas fraction data resolved regarding the bubble size and spatial distribution are presented. As in previous test series, flow patterns were analysed, whereby the classification results from the bubble size. A substantial part of these new air/water experiments were quality and plausibility checks of the measured data. In the result, a clear and consistent trend regarding their evolution with increasing distance from the position of the gas injection was found. Comparisons of the trend of time and cross section averaged gas volume fraction along the pipe height with the theoretically expected values were carried out. The influence of the orifice diameter of the gas injection on flow patterns is also discussed in the report.

Luft-Wasser Experimente im vertikalen DN200-Rohr

Beyer, M., Lucas, D., Kussin, J., Schütz, P. 07 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)

Gas dispersiom measurement in industrial mechanical cells and their conditions.

Braga, André Soares 30 November 2015 (has links)
The quality of gas dispersion within flotation cells is usually characterized by superficial gas velocity (Jg), gas hold-up (?g), bubble size distribution (db or D3,2) and bubble surface area flux (Sb). Because flotation is a separation process which depends largely on the interaction (collision + adhesion) of hydrophobic particles and air bubbles, process performance is dependent on appropriate gas dispersion within the slurry. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the gas dispersion of two flotation cells on a flotation bank composed of four 42.5 m³ Wemco cells (sub aerated), operating in series at the plant of Vale Fertilizantes (Cajati-SP). There were three measurement campaigns conducted under different operating conditions: a) Impeller diameter (D) of 1.09 m and impeller rotation speed (N) between 145 and 175 min-1; b) D = 0.99 m and 110 <= N <= 190 min-1; c) D = 0.99 m and N = 120 and 130 min-1. The following gas dispersion values were determined: 0.7 <= Jg <= 5.4 cm/s, 7 <= ?g <= 15%, 1.6 <= D3,2 <= 2.4 mm and Sb in the range of 24 to 162 s-1. The magnitude of Jg at 1st and 2nd campaigns showed to be higher than the values reported in literature, calling for modification of operational conditions of the equipments, as well as carefully maintenance. In addition, results from the 3rd campaign indicated values of gas dispersion parameters that matched those reported by current literature, accompanied by considerable mprovement in process performance.

3. Workshop "Meßtechnik für stationäre und transiente Mehrphasenströmungen", 14. Oktober 1999 in Rossendorf

Prasser, Horst-Michael 31 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
