To contribute to the field of research of Projects as Social Processes, this research study will investigate the various aspects of social processes in the project environment. The study will be qualitative in nature and will use a case study methodology investigating the social processes experienced by the project managers of the various subsystems of Bombardier Transportation, as part of the Bombela Concession Company, in the delivery of the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link project. Project Managers were interviewed to understand how they experience the social processes taking place in the project environment as well as how they handle and approach these social interactions. The above methodology used in this exploratory case study is specifically used to develop a justification for enlarging the existing methodological Project Management Bodies of Knowledge (PMBOK) and the Life Cycle processes applicable to System Engineering to include Social processes.

Connections and gateways: the Pretoria Interchange

The implementation of new public transport networks, such as the Gautrain, present new responsibilities and opportunities for urban development. Mega projects like these are constructed for various economical, social and political reasons. These underlying orders beg a necessary question when defining the architectural program required for the integration of the stations and there relative contexts. Integration is a key narrative for the exploration and enquiry of this thesis. The new Gautrain system should connect with existing and future transport systems, social systems and other contextual realities. Another question raised throughout the theoretical enquiry of this thesis is; to what extent does this connection and integration occur at the recently completed Gautrain stations? The idea of creating ‘Gateways’ into a city, rather than mere station ‘posts’ is explored as an architectural narrative. These ‘Gateways’ become the introductory point for commuters and an opportunity to create an experiential dimension relating to ‘the image of a city’ and its ‘zeitgeist’. Pretoria Station was chosen due the many layers of integration intrinsic to the site. This opportunity is available due to the existence of neo‐classical buildings within the immediate and macro context. Here the application of a contemporary, 21st century piece may create a representation of the progression of architectural and sociological thinking, relating to city building and transportation. This site also offers opportunities for exploring the integration of existing and future transport networks due to the existence of several of transport modes. Theories of city building and ‘placemaking’ are explored as a requirement borne out of the neglect for this site as it has developed through the modern era.

Re:fresh* : refreshment and retail strategy for Gautrain stations

The focus of this study is the provision of refreshment, retail and supporting facilities at Gautrain stations. This forms part of an overarching strategy called for the deployment of refreshment, retail and supporting facilities at stations. For the purposes of this thesis, the concept of refreshment focuses on the aspects of bodily / physiological and mental refreshment, whether this be through sale of beverages and snacks or distribution and availability of information, news and mental stimulation through design. The strategy is explored in more detail through the design of a multifunctional kiosk for medium term deployment at any of the Gautrain stations. The Hatfield Gautrain station building interior forms the backdrop of an the in depth design and technical development of the intervention. Important factors in this scheme is the identifying of the most popular refreshment and ancillary facilities at other similar train stations as well as the integration of such facilities into the existing Gautrain system identity. The design approach is formulated on the three levels of scale and revolves around the creation of places and the railway station as public meeting place; tectonic expression and various factors relating to cost and sustainability. The aim is to contribute to the understanding of user needs in terms of refreshment, retail and ancillary behaviours (e.g. access to info) at transport interchanges. Fract[ure]al : platform building at Menlyn

Major transportation and land use problems are experienced in the Menlyn precinct in Tshwane. Current infrastructure allows motor vehicles to dominate public transport and pedestrian thoroughfare. Pedestrians and motor vehicles are placed in danger and traffic problems occur when taxis and buses make use of road lanes and sidewalks to stop. The interaction and superposition of these problems are manifested as a fracture in the urban framework, disconnecting people, environments and different transport modes from one another and the rest of Tshwane. The aim of this design proposal is to address the fractured experience in the Menlyn area. The project should respond to the poor connectivity and transport problems currently experienced in Menlyn and reinforce Menlyn as an important node within Tshwane. Developing an alternative approach to mode choice modelling with the application of modelling Gautrain patronage

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Mode choice modelling is an important and versatile tool that can aid decision makers with transit related strategies and scenario planning. The traditional approach to modelling public transport is labour intensive and requires many resources. The expensive nature of developing mode choice models can also act as a deterrent for developing a model. Not having access to a functional mode choice model can force decision makers to make important decisions without having access to proper information. There is therefore a need to provide a simplified solution for developing a functional mode choice model that can be developed and maintained with fewer resources. This research project explores the possibility of developing a simplified alternative approach to public transport modelling that can model mode choice behaviour with the same degree of accuracy as traditional models. The modelling steps employed in this research project were the typical four step demand modelling approach, but the principles employed differ slightly. The focus area of this research project is the development of simplified utility functions and the calibration thereof. Typical mode choice models coincide with many assumptions, variations and uncertainties. In this research project the proposed utility functions are simplified by incorporating most of the assumptions and intangible components of the utility function into a single station to station specific calibration factor. The hypothesis is that a simplified alternative approach to the utility functions can still provide a model that is purpose built and functional. The application of the proposed mode choice model is to model the mode choice between the Gautrain and private vehicles as the major mode of transport.

Geotechnical investigations for the Gautrain Mass Transit Rapid Rail Link over dolomite bedrock in the Centurion area, South Africa

The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link is a state-of-the-art rail route and one of the ten Spatial Development Initiatives planned in Gauteng Province, South Africa. The route comprises two links, namely a link between Tshwane (Pretoria) and Johannesburg and a link between OR Tambo International Airport and Sandton. A total of 10 stations are linked by approximately 80 kilometres of rail along the proposed route. Between Johannesburg and Pretoria in the southern Tshwane region, the rail alignment is underlain by dolomite bedrock for approximately 15km in the vicinity of Centurion between Nelmapius Drive and The Fountains, including nearly 6km elevated on a viaduct. The stability of the rapid rail link constructed over the dolomitic sections was considered a major project risk due to its proneness to sinkholes and subsidences along this route. Construction on heterogeneous soils, pinnacled bedrock and other geohazards posed major challenges to the construction team. To facilitate detailed design and adapt proper foundation options for the viaducts founded over the dolomitic terrain, rigorous and comprehensive ground investigations were conducted by the Bombela Civils Joint Venture (BCJV). This work presents the different ground investigation methods used and how the results have led to the adoption of five suitable foundation solutions namely: large diameter shafts to rock, piles to rock, floating foundations over grouted ground, spread footings on shallow bedrock and concrete U shaped structures.
