The Silurian trilobites of the Girvan District Strathclyde region, Scotland

Howells, Yvonne January 1978 (has links)
The trilobite fauna of the Silurian successions of the Girvan area, Strathclyde Region, Scotland, is revised. Twenty eight genera (one new) belonging to the Scutelluidae, Illaenidae, Proetidae, Brachymetopidae, Aulacopleuridae, Harpetidae, Cheiruridae, Encrinuridae, Calymenidae, Phacopidae, Pterygometopidae, Lichidae and Odontopleuridae are represented, and include thirty nine named species (fifteen new), and twenty nine forms under open nomenclature. The fauna is interpreted as having occupied a shallow shelf environment. The distribution of trilobite species is compared with the shore-parallel brachiopod communities recognized in rocks of the same age in Wales and the Welsh Borderland.

Classification of certain genera of codes, lattices and vertex operator algebras

Junla, Nakorn January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Mathematics / Gerald H. Höhn / We classify the genera of doubly even binary codes, the genera of even lattices, and the genera of rational vertex operator algebras (VOAs) arising from the modular tensor categories (MTCs) of rank up to 4 and central charges up to 16. For the genera of even lattices, there are two types of the genera: code type genera and non code type genera. The number of the code type genera is finite. The genera of the lattices of rank larger than or equal to 17 are non code type. We apply the idea of a vector valued modular form and the representation of the modular group SL[subscript]2(Z) in [Bantay2007] to classify the genera of the VOAs arising from the MTCs of ranks up to 4 and central charges up to 16.

Pre-nebular Light Curves of SNe I

Arnett, W. David, Fryer, Christopher, Matheson, Thomas 29 August 2017 (has links)
We compare analytic predictions of supernova light curves with recent high-quality data from SN2011fe (Ia), KSN2011b (Ia), and the Palomar Transient Factory and the La Silla-QUEST variability survey (LSQ) (Ia). Because of the steady, fast cadence of observations, KSN2011b provides unique new information on SNe Ia: the smoothness of the light curve, which is consistent with significant large-scale mixing during the explosion, possibly due to 3D effects (e.g., Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities), and provides support for a slowly varying leakage (mean opacity). For a more complex light curve (SN2008D, SN Ib), we separate the luminosity due to multiple causes and indicate the possibility of a radioactive plume. The early rise in luminosity is shown to be affected by the opacity (leakage rate) for thermal and non-thermal radiation. A general derivation of Arnett's rule again shows that it depends upon all processes heating the plasma, not just radioactive ones, so that SNe Ia will differ from SNe Ibc if the latter have multiple heating processes.

In Search of a Class of Representatives for <em>SU</em>-Cobordism Using the Witten Genus

Mosley, John E. 01 January 2016 (has links)
In algebraic topology, we work to classify objects. My research aims to build a better understanding of one important notion of classification of differentiable manifolds called cobordism. Cobordism is an equivalence relation, and the equivalence classes in cobordism form a graded ring, with operations disjoint union and Cartesian product. My dissertation studies this graded ring in two ways: 1. by attempting to find preferred class representatives for each class in the ring. 2. by computing the image of the ring under an interesting ring homomorphism called the Witten Genus.

Systematics of Holarctic Teleiodini (Lepidoptera : Gelechiidae)

Lee, Sangmi 11 August 2007 (has links)
Phylogenetic relationships of 25 genera of Holarctic Teleiodini (Gelechiidae) are postulated based on morphology and molecular characters, including CO?I, CO?II, and 28S genes. The phylogenetic analysis of the morphology matrix yielded six equal most parsimonious trees (length 329 steps, CI = 0.38, RI = 0.53) and a strict consensus tree (length 342 steps, CI = 0.36, RI = 0.50) with two polytomies and two trichotomies. The phylogenetic analysis of the combined morphology matrix and the CO?I + CO?II + 28S matrix yielded two equally most parsimonious trees (length 1184 steps, CI = 0.50, RI = 0.41) and a strict consensus tree (length 1187 steps, CI = 0.50, RI = 0.40) that reinforced results from the morphological analysis and resolved the two polytomies and one of the two trichotomies present in the morphology consensus tree. Teleiodini are defined as a monophyletic clade with a Bremer support value greater than 5 in the consensus tree based on morphology and molecular data. Twenty?three clades of genera are defined with Bremer support values provided. An analyses of larval host plant preferences based on the consensus tree for combined data indicates derivation of feeding on woody hosts from genera feeding on herbaceous hosts and a single origin of feeding on coniferous hosts. An area cladogram indicates five independent origins of Nearctic genera from Holarctic ancestors and one origin from a Palearctic genus. The review of genera includes descriptions of imagos, genitalia, larvae, and pupae with illustrations of selected species. A new genus and a new species from Alabama and Mississippi, United States are described with illustrations of imago, wing venation, and male and female genitalia.

Analýza DNA izolované z probiotických výrobků s využitím magnetických mikročástic / Analysis of DNA isolated from probiotic products using magnetic microparticles

Oliva, Jan January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is interested in isolation and identification of probiotic bacteria in three different probiotic products using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). DNA in quality suitable for PCR was isolated from crude lysates using three different types of magnetic microparticles and phenol extraction. Identification genera and species of probiotic bacteria was proven using genus and species specific PCRs. Results were in accordance with data presented by manufacturers.
