The experience of self-destructive behavior in First Nations adolescent girlsDavis, Sarah 05 1900 (has links)
This study is an attempt to better understand the experience of self-destructive behaviour in
First Nations adolescent girls by telling their stories, discussing factors that may contribute to the
behaviours, and providing counselling insight. Not every Native girl experiences self-destructive
behaviour, however those that do require more effective solutions to their problems. There is
ample literature regarding non-Native girls and their experiences with self-destructive behaviour.
This is not the case with Native girls, and this study is an attempt to fill the literature gap, and at
the same time provide insight into counselling practice.
Many factors may contribute to the experience of self-destructive behaviour in First Nations
adolescent girls (e.g., gender, developmental stages, parenting, cultural norms and values, and
discrimination). The combination of these issues compounds each other and creates the context
for the experience of self-destructive behaviour specific to Native girls. This reality puts them at
risk for truancy, juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, depression,
anxiety, eating disorders, self-harming, and ultimately suicide.
In order to understand the circumstances or events that lead to a young Native woman's
experience with self-destructive behaviour I interviewed three women using in-depth, semi
structured interviews. When answering the open-ended questions I asked, the interviewees
revealed a story with a beginning, middle, and end. This story reflected the different stages in
their lives, childhood, adolescence, and eventually young adulthood. Analysis of the interviews
through theme identification revealed common threads through each woman's life. Although
each woman had unique experiences, their stories revealed many commonalties. These common
themes reflect factors that counsellors should consider when counselling First Nations girls who
are experiencing self-destructive behaviour.
The results of the study suggest that counsellors should not isolate factors that lead to self-destructive
behaviour. For example, First Nations girls experience not just racism or neglectful
parenting — they experience both of the factors. The contributing factors begin early in life and
compound one another as the girl's life progresses.
Hopefully, this study contributes to the betterment of individual Native girls, also to the
betterment of the families' and communities' health.

Text in Afrikaans / Hierdie studie handel oor die implementering van groepsterapie met adolessente koshuisdogters, waarvan die ouers geskei is. Die navorser het bevind dat die meeste koshuisdogters se probleme nie in een dag per week, deur 'n diensdoenende onderwyser in die koshuis aangespreek kan word nie. Hierdie bevinding het die vraag laat ontstaan of groepsterapie in die koshuis geimplementeer kan word. Daar was nie voldoende literatuur in sake groepsterapie by normale kinders nie en daarom is 'n loodsstudie van stapel gestuur. Die doelstelling van die studie is om groepsterapie te implementeer by adolessente koshuisdogters. There was insufficient literature, concerning group therapy with normal children, and therefore the researcher initiated a pilot study. The aim of the study was to implement group therapy with adolescent girls in the hostel. There were many girls in the hostel whose parents were divorced and so the sample was further curtailed. A practical manual including worksheets were compiled to be easily accessible to any Educational Psychologist doing group therapy. Experiences of graduation or termination from a girls youth community projectAlkana, Lidia 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / The study attempted to gain insight into the behavioural response to termination/ graduation of a group of ten female graduates from a community intervention programme. The participants, aged between eleven and fourteen years and predominantly from low socio-economic backgrounds, attended the Usiko Girls Youth Community Programme. The eighteen month programme aimed to facilitate their transition from girlhood to womanhood. To this end, the program was conceptualized as having various components including, but not limited to, Initiation, Life skills training, Cultural activities, Camps, and graduation. After the graduation ceremony, which culminated in the termination of the programme for these participants, they returned to the programme, stating different reasons for doing so. A single group, post-test design, utilizing a structured interview was employed with the main focus being the graduation and termination component, to help understand this phenomenon. Thematic analysis and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Results suggest that the participant’s identification with the programme made it difficult for some to terminate.

This study was designed to examine the effectiveness of the following career guidance strategies: career information investigating, job information interviewing, shadowing, panel of positive female role models, parental involvement and group counseling on career maturity and locus of control of high-achieving twelfth-grade females.
Participants in this study were thirty-two high-achieving twelfth-grade females currently enrolled in advanced placement English classes, who were currently taking advanced mathematics, advanced science, and advanced foreign language courses; or who had completed three years of advanced mathematics, advanced science, and advanced foreign language courses.
The design of this experiment was a pretest-posttest, experimental/control group design. The participants in the treatment group participated in a ten-week career guidance program involving strategies to increase career maturity and improve internal locus of control utilizing the results of the Career Maturity Inventory, Counseling Form B-1 and the Different Situations Inventory. / Ed. Ten selected yoga movements were successful applied in Gestalt Therapy to promote adolescent girls' awareness. The girls were between seventeen and eighteen years old. A review of the existing literature exercises indicated the value of meditation, breathing exercises, and relaxation exercises in the Gestalt therapeutic process. Hatha yoga however, offers a variety of movements that can be extracted and used as a resource for the promotion of awareness in the Gestalt therapeutic process.
A case study method where research was only used as a tool to gain better insights concerning the use of yoga movements was followed. The study results indicated that awareness of the body, posture; muscles tension, the self, and the environment were promoted. After yoga movements were used as introduction to the session, the social experience of the group discussion afterwards seemed to have been positive.
