EMPREENDEDORISMO E CRESCIMENTO ECONÔMICO: UMA AVALIAÇÃO DA PERFORMANCE ECONÔMICA DOS PAÍSES PARTICIPANTES DO GLOBAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP MONITOR (GEM) / ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND ECONOMIC GROWTH: AN ASSESSMENT OF THE ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE IN COUNTRIES PARTICIPATING IN THE GLOBAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP MONITOR (GEM)

Barcelos, Bartholomeo Oliveira 07 August 2013 (has links)
Programa de Apoio aos Planos de Reestruturação e Expansão das Universidades Federais / This study aims to analyze the performance of entrepreneurial activity in countries participating in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), by the use of multivariate quantitative methods, in order to generate new thinking about the role of entrepreneurship in the economic growth and development of countries. Therefore, the research is divided into two papers whose approaches are exploratory, due to the potential of the database for the realization of new research, and the achievement of international comparisons of economies. To achieve this goal, the techniques used were the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and the Cluster Analysis (CA) to study the relationship between the variables and the countries of the data set, thus obtaining an overview of the studied phenomenon. In the study of the variables, eight have been identified as the most representative of GEM s database, making the study of the entrepreneur process more effective. Among the most representative variables, the strong influence of the entrepreneurs´ attitude about the opening rates of new enterprises can be identified. To analyze the countries included in this study a classification of the economic performance of these nations was proposed, by creating a ranking of Entrepreneurial Activity Performance (EAP). The order of the countries was aligned to the methodologies used by both the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the World Bank, for the ranking of economic performance and economic development. Therefore, the study explored the main points of the GEM database, variables and countries, making use of multivariate techniques that provided information for the analysis of global entrepreneurship from a different perspective / Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar o desempenho da atividade empreendedora dos países participantes do Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), por meio de métodos quantitativos multivariados, visando gerar novas reflexões sobre o papel do empreendedorismo no crescimento e desenvolvimento econômico dos países.

Today they have the great challenge to seek social justice and general planetary well-being. The neo-liberal development model is in crises, and there is a social concern regarding new ways to make business that may lead to new cycles of development where not only economics is relevant but also social and environmental responsibility become essential as in the case of the so call triple bottom line. Since the beginnings of last century entrepreneurship attracted the attention of academic research mostly on the area of Business Administration. Entrepreneurs are recognized as responsible for very small to large organizations, and hence for local to regional to national and even global development, in particular because its innovating potential. The purpose of this work is to study behavior characteristics of entrepreneurs as well as its special ability to start and implement new business models. Our approach to this area goes through an analysis on literature concerning ideas and concepts on entrepreneurship and social development; and then seek for experiences, in particular on the social area, that also may be helping to develop an entrepreneurship culture in Brazil Data come from different sources like GEM and SEBRAE recent reports and help to study projects and programs, like the ones of Ashoka, Artemisia , and The Secretary of Work and Social Entrepreneurship of Ceara. We also consider the Social Entrepreneurship Prize. Entrepreneurship in Brazil is going well and growing fast, thanks in particular to programs like the ones of SEBRAE for the development of new business, and no doubt the potential for creating and starting new business by entrepreneurs may be extremely important for sustainable local development, particularly when they are supported and oriented by programs that may promote social and environmental responsibility, and this may be a key for the future development of our country / Em um passado recente, as organizações não estavam preparadas, ou capacitadas, para garantir boa distribuição de renda e acesso a mecanismos facilitadores para o desenvolvimento sustentável.

Purpose: to identify and analyze the attributes of the entrepreneurial capacity that generate the use of business opportunities through the action, according to concepts of Entrepreneurship Theory, present in the individual entrepreneur in the sector of specialty coffees. Design/Approach: a qualitative field research was developed, focused on the individual entrepreneur of the specialty coffee sector. Through the application of semi-structured questionnaires, data were collected from these entrepreneurs, who were subsequently submitted to content analysis. In addition, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) was used to highlight the characteristics of entrepreneurship in Brazil and to compare them with the data obtained in the study of this sector. Findings: the results showed that entrepreneurs in the specialty coffee sector use their attributes of entrepreneurial capacity to identify and take advantage of opportunities in the market. This occurs through the entrepreneurial action, with the construction of connections and adaptations in environments of uncertainty. It was concluded that there are some differences regarding the gender and level of schooling, among the profile of Brazilian entrepreneurship, according to GEM, with a sample of this research. Management Implication: all the attributes raised in the literature for this research were present in the nine entrepreneurs analyzed, directly impacting their way of acting before the market in which they are inserted. It should be mentioned that a small number of entrepreneurs present in the specialty coffee market, located in different regions of the country, were analyzed. This fact limits the generalization of the results achieved, because differences may exist depending on the practices used by each entrepreneur from different profiles and regions of Brazil. Originality: the Brazilian agribusiness is an important economic segment, which is directly influenced by the entrepreneurs in front of their companies. Thus, entrepreneurial attributes, offered by an Entrepreneurship Theory, create competitive differentials to start and establish a company, especially in niche markets, such as the Special Coffee market.

A comparative study of entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial intentions amongst students at selected South African institutions of higher education

Matsheke, Moses Jametane 01 1900 (has links)
PhD. (Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Management Sciences), Vaal University of Technology. / Entrepreneurial intention (EI) is considered as an element used by researchers to measure the propensity of individuals to become entrepreneurs. Higher education institutions (HEIs) have been utilised globally by governments as mechanisms to increase the EIs of students by establishing entrepreneurship as an academic discipline and instituting entrepreneurship programmes at all educational levels. However, in South Africa, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) reports a decline in EIs in the last decade of the population aged 18-64 years. The current study investigated the influence of the entrepreneurship education (EE) at one selected Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college and a University of Technology (UOT) located in the Gauteng Province, South Africa through a comparative analysis. The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) and the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) were used as theories to underpin the study. In addition, Self-efficacy (SE), Need to Achieve (NA) and Instrumental Readiness (IR) were included as constructs to examine further variables for EIs. The study adopted a survey design and followed a quantitative research approach in determining the relationship between the identified variables. A self-administered survey questionnaire was used to gather the data from the sampled students at the selected HEIs. The total number of usable questionnaires was 390 from the TVET college and 362 from the UOT, giving a total of 752 responses. The empirical analysis was performed by means of the descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), Pearson correlations, and regression analysis. The descriptive analysis procedure was utilised to examine the demographic profile of the respondents as well as the perceptions of the respondents towards the research constructs of the study. The EFA procedure confirmed that all measurement scales applied in the study were unidimensional. The Pearson correlation analysis was used to examine the linear association between the constructs while the regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses. The results of the hypotheses tests revealed that EE was statistically significant in predicting the EI of the students from both the TVET college and UOT. The tests further revealed that EE was also statistically significant in predicting the Attitude towards Behaviour (ATB), Subjective Norm (SN), Perceived Behavioural Control (PBC), SE, NA and IR of the students from both HEIs in a similar manner. However, PBC, SE, and NA were found to be statistically insignificant for the TVET college students while for the UOT students only SN, NA and IR were statistically insignificant. The study concludes that EE is an important tool that can be used to enhance the EI of the students at both types of HEIs. It further draws the conclusion that students from the TVET college are more dependent on external factors such as the support of their families and friends as well as the availability of resources to start thinking of starting their own business, whereas those from the UOT are more reliant on internal motivation. Based on the results, the study recommends that subjects in the curriculum in HEIs should have a learning unit dedicated to stimulating entrepreneurship amongst students. Such an approach might inspire students to venture into entrepreneurship.
