An ontology-based approach to Automatic Generation of GUI for Data Entry

Liu, Fangfang 20 December 2009 (has links)
This thesis reports an ontology-based approach to automatic generation of highly tailored GUI components that can make customized data requests for the end users. Using this GUI generator, without knowing any programming skill a domain expert can browse the data schema through the ontology file of his/her own field, choose attribute fields according to business's needs, and make a highly customized GUI for end users' data requests input. The interface for the domain expert is a tree view structure that shows not only the domain taxonomy categories but also the relationships between classes. By clicking the checkbox associated with each class, the expert indicates his/her choice of the needed information. These choices are stored in a metadata document in XML. From the viewpoint of programmers, the metadata contains no ambiguity; every class in an ontology is unique. The utilizations of the metadata can be various; I have carried out the process of GUI generation. Since every class and every attribute in the class has been formally specified in the ontology, generating GUI is automatic. This approach has been applied to a use case scenario in meteorological and oceanographic (METOC) area. The resulting features of this prototype have been reported in this thesis.

An enhanced user interface management system

Huang, Hai-Shan January 1997 (has links)
A User Interface Management System (UIMS) called the Harness has been developed to support the front-ending of existing software systems. In the Harness, a set of core Abstract Interaction Objects (AIOs) was provided for knowledge-based modules to interact with the user. It is not realistic to expect the Harness to be a closed and fixed system. On the other hand, help capabilities are today considered essential components of well designed software and on-line help systems have come to be a standard feature of most new software systems.

Design and Implementation of Convex Analysis of Mixtures Software Suite

Meng, Fan 10 September 2012 (has links)
Various convex analysis of mixtures (CAM) based algorithms have been developed to address real world blind source separation (BSS) problems and proven to have good performances in previous papers. This thesis reported the implementation of a comprehensive software CAM-Java, which contains three different CAM based algorithms, CAM compartment modeling (CAM-CM), CAM non-negative independent component analysis (CAM-nICA), and CAM non-negative well-grounded component analysis (CAM-nWCA). The implementation works include: translation of MATLAB coded algorithms to open-sourced R alternatives. As well as building a user friendly graphic user interface (GUI) to integrate three algorithms together, which is accomplished by adopting Java Swing API. In order to combine R and Java coded modules, an open-sourced project RCaller is used to handle the establishment of low level connection between R and Java environment. In addition, specific R scripts and Java classes are also implemented to accomplish the tasks of passing parameters and input data from Java to R, run R scripts in Java environment, read R results back to Java, display R generated figures, and so on. Furthermore, system stream redirection and multi-threads techniques are used to build a simple R messages displaying window in Java built GUI. The final version of the software runs smoothly and stable, and the CAM-CM results on both simulated and real DCE-MRI data are quite close to the original MATLAB version algorithms. The whole GUI based open-sourced software is easy to use, and can be freely distributed among the communities. Technical details in both R and Java modules implementation are also discussed, which presents some good examples of how to develop software with both complicate and up to date algorithms, as well as decent and user friendly GUI in the scientific or engineering research fields. / Master of Science

An Open Interface Architecture for Web-based System Administration

Chen, Chung-hsing 10 January 2006 (has links)
As a result of Internet popularly, the World Wide Web, a killer application which improves the global network, is used much more frequently. Because World Wide Web is browsed through GUI (Graphic User Interface) which allows end-user to interact and operate with internet websites easily, more and more websites are created and operating. For this moment, the web based GUI proved its advantages that it can be applied not only to general website but also to electronic commerce, enterprise information system, and system resources administration. Today, the processing architecture evolves from early centralized processing architecture to recently distributed processing architecture which is composed of several servers and in which each server is responsible for a different system service. But because each system platform runs on its own unique operating system, system administrators have difficulties operating it. Due to increased numbers of servers, a well-defined systematic management architecture and remote management is necessary. This thesis contains the designs of web based system administration architecture through the designs of united library interface to increase the convenience of expansion on library. In this paper, a prototype system created during the research development will serve as theory verification and as an example for developers of future system management platforms.

Whole Care+: An integrated health care for the elderly living in their homes

Park, Hyo Ri 01 May 2011 (has links)
The elderly experience their health getting significantly deteriorated as they age. They suffer not only from chronic diseases but from various geriatric diseases such as high blood pressure, arthritis and cardiovascular disease. Their mental health also retreats creating challenges for the elderly from the loss of short term memory to dementia. Furthermore, after they retire, the elderly’s social network decreases as their social activities are inevitably limited to a small group of people like families and friends. With the face of such impairments in their physical, mental and social health, many elderly cannot help but are being institutionalized or sent to specialized places like nursing homes, which provide them professional care. However, a study indicates that most Americans prefer to stay in their homes as they get older since they can maintain their social connections to neighbors and friends, be close to their medical caregivers in town as well as attain emotional comfort and security with familiar surrounding and environments. On top of that, Americans of all ages value on keeping their ability of independence and autonomy by controlling their lives in general. Various health care-aid devices and services appear to offer specific support to health care activities for the elderly in their homes. However, such aids have more focused only on when the elderly’s health is degraded or on very specific areas such as tracking health data like blood pressure, blood sugar and calorie intakes. The elderly need comprehensive understanding about their health problems, healthy daily habits and timely interactions with their families and caregivers, in order to keep independent living safely in their places. Smart Home technology has much potential to support the elderly’s independent living as well as interactions with others. To better understand this, we conducted a user-centered design project which looks at the management of the elderly’s health enabled by Smart Home technology.

Nowadays is Increasingly evident a greater resources scarcity and competition for physical space, in result of growing up and large population concentration into large cities. In this context, comes up the necessity of solutions that are in compliance with initiative of smart cities. Those solutions seek concentrate monitoring and control, for help to make decisions. Although, this sources of information technology and communications (ITCs) forming complex structures and generates a huge quantity of data that represents biggest challenges and opportunities. One of the main technological tools used in this context is the Complex Event Processing (CEP), which may be considered a good solution to deal with increase of the availability and large volume of data, in real time. The CEPs realizes captation of events in a simple way, using expressive languages, to define and execute processing rules. Although the efficient use of this tools, the fact of the rules being expressed in low level, becomes your use exclusive for specialists, difficulting the creation of solutions. With the aim of reduce the complexity of the CEPs tools, solutions has used an approach of models Model-Driven Development (MDD), in order to produce an abstraction layer, that allows to create rules, without necessarily being a specialist in CEP languages. however, many this tools become more complex than the conventional low level language approach. This work aims to build a Graphic User Interface (GUI) for the creation of CEP rules, using MDD, in order to a more intuitive development, across of the adapted model how necessities of the non specialist users.

Mobile phone based remote monitoring system

Liu, Danyi January 2008 (has links)
This thesis investigates embedded databases and graphical interfaces for the MicroBaseJ project. The project aim is the development of an integrated database and GUI user interface for a typical 3G, or 2.5G, mobile phone with Java MIDP2 capability. This includes methods for data acquisition, mobile data and information communication, data management, and remote user interface. Support of phone delivered informatics will require integrated server and networking infrastructure research and development to support effective and timely delivery of data for incorporation in mobile device-based informatics applications. A key research and development (R&D) challenge is to support effective and timely delivery of data for incorporation in mobile device-based informatics applications. Another important aspect of the project is determining how to develop efficient graphics for the small mobile screen. The research investigates and analyses the architecture of a mobile monitoring system. The project developed a generic solution that can be implemented in a number of commercial sectors, such as horticulture, building management and pollution/water management. The developed concept is tested using data relevant to the horticultural area of application. The system also addresses the main issues related to mobile monitoring, including real-time response, data integrity, solution cost, graphical presentation, and persistent storage capabilities of modern mobile devices. Four embedded databases based on J2ME have been investigated. Two of the four have been evaluated and analysed. The Insert function, Sequence Search, and Random Search of Perst List and RMS (Record Management System) databases have been tested. The size of the processed data was limited to 20,000 records when using the wireless toolkit simulator, and 11,000 records when using a mobile phone. Perst Lite reflects good performance and has out-performed RMS in all tests. User interface software such as J2ME Polish for mobile phones has been investigated. Custom J2ME class for graphical interface is developed. This provides the graphical presentation of the data collected from the sensors; including temperature, wind speed, wind direction, moisture, and leaf wetness. The graphical interface, bar charts, and line charts with trace ball for collected data have been designed and implemented. The embedded database performance and project performance have been investigated and analysed. The performances of Perst Lite and RMS are evaluated in terms of the insert, sequence search, and random search functions based on simulation and real devices. The record numbers vary from 1,000 to 20,000. The project performance contains data receiving and storage, and data presentation and configuration. The performance of data storage and configuration can be negated due to the running mode and the response time. Thus, data presenting performance is the key focus in this project. This performance was divided into the categories of initial, data search, data selection, and charting. The initial performance includes the initialisation of the project parameters, and the reaching of the welcome interface. Data search performance refers to the retrieval of the specified data from the embedded database, measured on 48 data points, which only can be presented on the mobile screen from the retrieved data. These four performance types are measured in thousands of record numbers, varying from 1,000 to 18,000 record numbers, with the retrieved data range varying from 1 day to 30 days.

Automatizuotas internetinių IS vartotojo sąsajų kūrimas / Automated GUI generation for WEB based information systems

Pečiulaitis, Marius 16 January 2007 (has links)
In this work the main aspects were discussed that need to be evaluated by establishing graphical user interface. There were discussed some user interface languages and technologies such as XML, XUL, XIML, XSLT, CSS, XHTML, analyzed some used methods for automated user interface generation. On a basis of this analysis, the proper method was chosen to apply for generating of user interface using ODRES method results. On the next stadeges of the work it was designed and developed prototype of the GUI generation system. The main goals were to develop cross-platform user interface, using as mutch as possible simplyer technologies along with that securing constant design on different web browsers. Generation process operates using the GUI specification stored in the MS SQL database and converting it to XML and along with the XSLT files used as parser. After these files are opened using web browser, XML and XSLT code is processed to an XHTML code. The process of the user interface generation is flexible and alows user change GUI’s appearance on the fly adjusting it’s specification stored on the database or XSLT rooles as well. During this work were made some ot the modifications to the ODRES database: appended few more attributes, describing graphical elements characteristics and web form relations; added extra tables.
