From Introduction: The reIationship between technology and art today is a logical extension of a collaborative tradition with ancient roots. The artist has always been a principal perpetrator of technological innovation. He, through the natural progression of technical means, has virtually evolved each new art form. There are many examples such as the 'lost wax' casting process, Jan Van Eycks oil paint innovations, Senefelders 'chemical printing' and Niecephore Niepce's first eight hour photographic exposures. Even woodblocks were in their time an innovation. All art uses technology of a kind and artists who prefer to remain aloof from it are in fact merely using technologies absorbed in older traditional media further back in the history of art. It is the flexibility of art to adapt to changing conditions of the world today which has spurred change and brought about a new dynamism in the graphic arts. The present intensity of interest in the print can be directly attributed to the advancement of technology and communication in this century. A whole new field of materials, methods and techniques are now available to the venturesome graphic artist and printmaker. Along with the contemporary technology dedication to expression leads naturally to innovation in aesthetics.

An exploration of how professional graphic design discourse impacts on innovation : a focus on the articulation of a South African design language in i-jusi

This study examines the graphic design industry’s call for ‘a South African design language’ in post-apartheid South Africa and how the non-commercial publication i-jusi is envisaged as a space for graphic designers to innovate a South African design language. The central premise of this research is that graphic design, as a form of cultural production, is discursive. In this respect, graphic design practice is constructed and constrained by professional discourse, which is in turn informed by social structures. However, discourse is also a site of contestation and graphic designers may challenge or negotiate professional discourse in their practice. Thus, as Wolff (1981) argues, the possibility for innovation within graphic design practice may exist at a particular historical moment, although this possibility is itself situated within social structures. In this study, the impact of professional graphic design discourse on the attempt to innovate a South African design language in i-jusi is explored. Utilising qualitative interviews and other texts selected from graphic design commentary (conference presentations and published articles), the motivations of the producers of i-jusi are examined with a view to assessing how their articulation of a South African design language is informed by professional graphic design discourse.

Observou aspectos do cenário do mercado editorial brasileiro da década de 1980 discorrendo sobre publicações consideradas marcantes do ponto de vista do design editorial. The research is justified by the low number of publications that has the objective of studying the Brazilian graphic design with a focus on regionalized productions, as well the importance of preserving the cultural heritage, in which that the maganize is part of and, finally, the establishment of a panorama that enable our understanding of the birth and establishment of the graphic design market in the region of Bauru. The present survey observed the terminology employed in the professional industry, especially in specific activities such as the graphic deisgn field, with the purpose of establishing minimum parameters for their understanding and use. It also addressed the discussion about what Graphic Design is, which is considered as a parameter the definitions of national authors, due to the fact that these authors have a recognition of their relevant activity and action, and closer to the Brazilian reality. It was also observed the Brazilian editorial market in the 1980s, discussing publications considered outstanding in terms of editorial design. Finally, a detailed presentation of Traço Group and Traço Magazine was made from information gathered both by the periodic itself as from interviews held with most of the group members. This investigation, with an exploratory qualitative approach and a documentary bibliographic imprint, relies on the application of techniques related to literature review and field research along with semi-structured interviews that were conducted with most of the members from the group that were responsible for the maganize publication. Graphic design students’ perceptions of work practice

Thesis (MTech (Graphic Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016. / The aim of this study was to examine how students experience the transition from the classroom to the workplace. This research explored what factors students found problematic and which factors was helpful during the transition. This research was qualitative and this study focused on the experiences of the participants and all data was collected from their perception of work practice. I used Activity Theory as a theoretical framework to compile and organize relevant data. Data was gathered using video recordings, hand written journal entries and individual interviews. The research was conducted in an on-campus design studio that is situated within the Design Faculty at Cape Peninsula University of Technology. The reason for choosing Design Logic as a site is the following; the studio sits neatly between the classroom and the workplace, although the studio is in a protected environment, most of the elements that are present in a real world setup is reflected within Design Logic i.e. the stresses of satisfying demanding clients, working with budgets, liaising with suppliers and the ever present looming deadlines all form part of the daily make-up of Design Logic. Although the starting point of the study was to search for the problem areas of the student’s transition into the work place, the analyzed data revealed the dissimilarities between the two systems and how the participants overcame the difference i.e. shifting identities and rules and norms to develop new skills suited for the work place. The workspace opened a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and highlighted the value and importance of work practice in preparation of graduates for industry.
