Eddy Covariance in a Tallgrass Prairie: energy balance closure, water and carbon budgets, and shrub expansion

Arnold, Kira Brianne January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Agronomy / Jay Ham / The exchange of water, carbon, and energy between grasslands and the atmosphere is an important biogeochemical pathway affecting ecosystem productivity and sustainability. The eddy covariance (EC) technique directly measures this mass and energy exchange. However, questions remain regarding the accuracy of EC-derived H[subscript]2O and CO[subscript]2 fluxes in landscapes with irregular topography and variable vegetation. These concerns stem from the "energy balance (EB) closure problem" (i.e., measured energy in does not equal measured energy out). My main objectives were to examine EB closure at two topographical positions within an annually burned tallgrass prairie watershed and to examine the effect of landscape position and woody encroachment on carbon and water exchanges. In tallgrass prairie, 14 km south of Manhattan, KS, USA, EC towers were deployed at three sites in 2007 and 2008. One upland and lowland tower were within an annually burned watershed dominated by C[subscript]4 grasses. Another lowland tower was deployed in a separate quadrennial-burned watershed where significant woody vegetation occupied the tower's sampling area. All towers measured EB components (net radiation, R[subscript]n; soil heat flux, G; sensible heat flux, H; and latent heat flux, [lambda]E). In the annually burned watershed, landscape position had little effect on G, H, and R[subscript]n with differences [less than] 2% between sites. However lowland [lambda]E was 8% higher, owing to larger plant biomass/leaf area and greater soil moisture. Energy balance closure (i.e., [[lambda]E + H] / [R[subscript]n - G]) was 0.87 and 0.90 at the upland and lowland sites, respectively. A nearby large-aperture scintillometer provided good validation of EC-derived H in 2007. Data suggested that underestimates of [lambda]E may have accounted for the closure problem; sample calculations showed that increasing [lambda]E by 17% would have resulted in near prefect closure. Data from this study suggests that EB closure does not strongly correlate with topographical position; however these data raise questions regarding accuracy of the [lambda]E term. Mass exchange analysis shows that the prairie carbon cycle is highly dependent on burning. The lowland and upland annually burned sites saw carbon gains of 281 to 444 g C m[superscript]-[superscript]2 yr[superscript]-[superscript]1 before burning with the shrub lowland showing the least (e.g. 159 and 172 g C m[superscript]-[superscript]2 yr[superscript]-[superscript]1). After the prescribed burn, the upland and lowland sites remained slight carbon sinks (68 to 191 g C m[superscript]-[superscript]2 yr[superscript]-[superscript]1), whereas the unburned shrub site was a carbon sink in 2007 (159 g C m[superscript]-[superscript]2 yr[superscript]-[superscript]1, because no carbon loss was incurred via burning) and a large carbon source in 2008 when it was burned the following year (336 g C m[superscript]-[superscript]2 yr[superscript]-[superscript]1 loss). Evapotranspiration (ET) was highest at the shrub lowland where greater soil moisture and abundance of deep-rooted C[subscript]3 shrub vegetation allowed greater uptake and loss of water.

Vegetation productivity responds to sub-annual climate conditions across semiarid biomes

Barnes, Mallory L., Moran, M. Susan, Scott, Russell L., Kolb, Thomas E., Ponce-Campos, Guillermo E., Moore, David J. P., Ross, Morgan A., Mitra, Bhaskar, Dore, Sabina 05 1900 (has links)
In the southwest United States, the current prolonged warm drought is similar to the predicted future climate change scenarios for the region. This study aimed to determine patterns in vegetation response to the early 21st century drought across multiple biomes. We hypothesized that different biomes (forests, shrublands, and grasslands) would have different relative sensitivities to both climate drivers (precipitation and temperature) and legacy effects (previous-year's productivity). We tested this hypothesis at eight Ameriflux sites in various Southwest biomes using NASA Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) from 2001 to 2013. All sites experienced prolonged dry conditions during the study period. The impact of combined precipitation and temperature on Southwest ecosystems at both annual and sub-annual timescales was tested using Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). All biomes studied had critical sub-annual climate periods during which precipitation and temperature influenced production. In forests, annual peak greenness (EVImax) was best predicted by 9-month SPEI calculated in July (i.e., January-July). In shrublands and grasslands, EVImax was best predicted by SPEI in July through September, with little effect of the previous year's EVImax. Daily gross ecosystem production (GEP) derived from flux tower data yielded further insights into the complex interplay between precipitation and temperature. In forests, GEP was driven by cool-season precipitation and constrained by warm-season maximum temperature. GEP in both shrublands and grasslands was driven by summer precipitation and constrained by high daily summer maximum temperatures. In grasslands, there was a negative relationship between temperature and GEP in July, but no relationship in August and September. Consideration of sub-annual climate conditions and the inclusion of the effect of temperature on the water balance allowed us to generalize the functional responses of vegetation to predicted future climate conditions. We conclude that across biomes, drought conditions during critical sub-annual climate periods could have a strong negative impact on vegetation production in the southwestern United States.

Themeda Triandra Renosterveld in the Heidelberg District

Raitt, Gwendolyn R. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigated the composition of Themeda triandra Renosterveld in part of the Grootvadersbosch Conservancy and the effects of selected environmental and management variables to provide guidelines for promoting the presence of Themeda triandra in the veld. The Zürich-Montpellier phytosociological method was used to determine the composition of the Renosterveld communities. The point quadrat method was used to determine the cover of Themeda triandra at three grass dominated sites and compare cover from one site with past cover measurements at the specific site. Ordination was used to examine the effects of the environmental and management variables on the plant communities. Two community groups, five communities and five subcommunities were identified and described. The Themeda triandra – Stoebe phyllostachys Grassland Community Group consists of two communities of which one has two subcommunities. The Themeda triandra – Elytropappus rhinocerotis Shrubland Community Group consists of three communities of which one has three subcommunities. The vegetation units described in this study have not been described previously in the literature. One community belongs to Silcrete Fynbos while another subcommunity is transitional between Renosterveld and thicket and gallery forest. The rest of the plant communities fit the definition for Renosterveld (the local Renosterveld type is Eastern Rûens Shale Renosterveld). Cover of Themeda triandra did not differ significantly either between sites or between years. The comparison of Themeda triandra cover between years was done at a site that had been burnt between the last two sampling times yet the cover was not significantly different. This indicates that fire and other management practices did not have a negative impact on Themeda triandra at the site. Unconstrained ordination of the dataset in which cover/abundance values were included, grouped the relevés by moisture and disturbance but the presence/absence dataset indicates that the two community groups have a slight transitional overlap. Constrained ordination of both datasets with a) soil variables and b) management variables, both showed a tendency to separate the relevés into community groups, that did not happen with topographic and vegetation variables. Ordination did not separate the community groups into their subdivisions. The soil variables (both nutrients and texture) influence the vegetation structure and the community distribution. Under the existing grazing management regime, fire at three to five year intervals promoted the dominance of Themeda triandra by affecting the structure of the plant communities, the abundance of species other than Themeda triandra, and influencing which plant community is present. The use of fire as a management tool was regulated by the importance of the natural veld pastures to the farmers. The natural veld pastures are not suitable for dairy cattle in milk. Thus dairy farmers are less likely to burn the natural veld (no planned burns only chance fires) than those who farm with mutton or beef (planned burns on a three to five year interval).

The Intervention of Human Modifications on Plant and Tree Species in the Landscape of the LBJ National Grasslands

Lang, Brett M. 05 1900 (has links)
An analysis utilizing both ArcGIS and ethnographic interviews from private land owners and environmental professionals examined how man-made landscape changes affected plant and tree species in the LBJ National Grasslands in Wise County, Texas north of Decatur. From the late 1800s to the Dust Bowl Era the land was used for crop production and cattle grazing resulting in erosion and loss of soil nutrients. The research indicated by 2001 that cattle grazing and population increase resulted in land disturbance within the administrative boundary of the national grasslands. Participants expressed concern over the population increase and expansion of 5 to 10 acre ranchettes for cattle grazing common in modern times. Recommendations for the future included utilizing and expanding the resources already existing with environmental professionals to continue controlling erosion.

Evaluation des services fourragers et environnementaux des prairies permanentes à partir de la végétation, du milieu et des pratiques de gestion / Evaluation of agronomic and environmental services of permanent grasslands from vegetation, environment and management

Michaud, Audrey 27 June 2011 (has links)
The contribution of permanent grasslands (PG) to agronomic and environmental services is important. However, their low level of subsidies, a lack of knowledge about their management and a disinterest of these surfaces in favour of more productive forage production have accelerated their downturn. The upgrade of these surfaces in forage systems in particular by studying services of PG is an important issue. In this context, the objective of our study was to identify pedoclimatic and management practices descriptors and characteristics of the vegetation relevant to predict these services. Our approach was based on different steps: i) identification and characterization of forage and environmental services relevant to the PG, ii) identification of aptitude criteria (herbage quality, amount of nectar available ...) which allow to assess the degree of achievement of the services, iii) prediction of values for each criterion of aptitude from characteristics of vegetation (botanical and functional composition) and iv) building links between characteristics of vegetation and pedoclimatic (temperature, soil moisture) and management practices (fertilization, date of first cut) descriptors. From the literature survey, expertise and farm surveys we selected the forage and environmental services, the criteria of aptitude, the characteristics of vegetation and pedoclimatic and management practices descriptors. In total, four environmental services and 11 feed services were studied, taking into account the 12 characteristics of the vegetation (botanical composition (presence and dominance of species) and functional composition (life traits and properties of species)), 15 pedoclimatic descriptors (temperature, soil moisture ...) and 19 management practices descriptors (fertilization, intensity of use of grassland...). The study of a national network of 190 grasslands allowed us to show that botanical and functional composition are non-redundant and influenced by different pedoclimatic and management practices descriptors. The functional composition is influenced by pedoclimatic and management practices descriptors while the botanical composition, which uses a larger number of descriptors, is mainly predicted by pedoclimatic descriptors. The model predictions are better for the botanical composition than for the functional composition. The study of this network and of an experiment in control conditions allowed us to evaluate the quality of prediction of criteria of aptitude for forage services from the functional composition (functional types (FT), proportion of grasses, legumes and forbs, middle stage and dry matter content) of the vegetation. The study in a common environment of three grasslands contrasted on FT composition confirms on the whole growth season the differences in quality and production of grassland that are linked to the FT composition. In contrast, at the scale of the national grassland network, FT composition alone is not sufficient to predict the observed differences in production and quality. Other characteristics of vegetation such as the proportion of legumes and forbs, as well as the mean stage of vegetation or the dry matter content also contribute to explain the differences in production and quality between grasslands. Finally, a multicriteria approach allowed us to build an evaluation method of forage and environmental services from the criteria of aptitude. Thus, this thesis work allowed the development of a method to predict the forage and environmental services provided by permanent grasslands from the knowledge of pedoclimatic characteristics, management practices and of simple vegetation criteria

Plant community assembly in grazed grasslands

Marteinsdóttir, Bryndís January 2014 (has links)
Species assembly into local communities from the surrounding region can be caused either by species failure to reach the site (i.e. seed limitation) or to establish (i.e. establishment limitation). The aim of this thesis was to investigate plant species assembly and to determine the relative importance of different factors in that process. In a cultivated landscape in southeast Sweden, plant community assembly was studied in grazed ex-arable fields. Community assembly from the surrounding region into the local community was explored using trait-based null models and seed sowing and transplanting experiments. The influence of local environmental factors and landscape history and structure on community assembly was also studied. In addition, differences in species assembly between ex-arable fields and semi-natural grasslands were explored. Seed limitation was the strongest filter on local community assembly. Only a fraction (36%) of species in a region dispersed to a local site and adding seeds/transplants increased species establishment. Species abundance at the regional scale, species dispersal method and seed mass strongly influenced which species arrived at the local sites. Establishment limitation also affected the assembly. Of species arriving at a site 78% did establish, seedling survival was low and which species established was influenced by species interactions, local environmental conditions and stochastic events. In addition, landscape structure that determined the species richness in the regional species pool influenced the local assembly. The comparison between assembly in ex-arable fields and semi-natural grasslands indicated that the main cause of difference in species assembly between them was difference in their age. The main conclusion of this thesis is that regional processes are more important than local factors in determining plant community assembly. /
At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 3: Submitted. Paper 4: Submitted. Paper 5: Manuscript.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Marina Comerlatto da Rosa.pdf: 4715462 bytes, checksum: 33d2627d4f49c3c39739ca7d9ddb777b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-12-04 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / ‘Souhtern Grasslands’ is the biogeographical term assigned by the Brazilian Governmentto the natural field extensions present in the Mata Atlântica and Pampa Domains that correspond to the biogeographical provinces ‘Paranaense’ and ‘Pampeana’, respectivelly. The spatial delineation of the Campos District in the Paranaense Province, within the southern portion of the Atlantic Forest Domain comprises the native grasslands of State of Parana (‘Campos Gerais’, ‘Campos de Guarapuava’ and ‘Campos de Palmas’) Santa Catarina (‘Campos de Palmas’ / ‘Água Doce’ and ‘Planalto de Lages’), and Rio Grande do Sul (‘Campos de Cima da Serra’). Despite their homogeneous appearance, ‘Souhtern Grasslands’ may show significant differences in their composition depending on the environmental conditions and the evolution of the flora in the two provinces involved. In this sense, to elucidate the biogeographic relationships of native grasslands of the ‘Campos Gerais’ in Paranaense Province means establish whether the plant communities comprise marginal areas of geographic scale or, conversely, compound species dispersal center, or even species routes from dispersion centers out of ‘Campos Gerais’. This study therefore aims to determine the biogeographical relationships among remnants of native grasslands in the Escarpa Devoniana Environmental Protection Area. For this, we used a presence/absence matrix composed by 414 species from phytosociological data, and 1,375 species from floristic surveys from nine plant communities: CPI - Piraí da Serra, EGU - Guartelá State Park, SJ – São João River, CPG - Pitangui Valley, CAP – Capão da Onça, FG / BP - Furnas Gêmeas and Buraco do Padre, CIA - IAPAR Model Farm, EVV - Vila Velha State Park, and CBN – Ponte dos Arcos. Just two of them are within protect areas. It were calculated the Biogeographycal Similarity Coefficient as well Harrison and Wilson & Schmida beta diversity indices. Once there was lack of spatial autocorrelation (Moran Correlogram), for the floristic similarity calculation we used multivariate statistical analysis. The contemporary vegetation is a confluence between marginal areas of the geographical range of southern grasslands and northern subtropical savannah (Cerrado Domain). There were no evidences of this region as a dispersion center nor corridor between other dispersion centers in the Mata Atlântica Domain. Ecotonal areas lead to biodiversity increase as well point out their extreme vulnerability to climate or anthropogenic disturbances.

Dominance vs. complementarity : a global analysis of the influence of plant functional community structure on ecosystem functioning measured as NDVI

Engel, Thore January 2017 (has links)
Theoretical, experimental and observational studies show that biodiversity ecosystem functioning (BEF) relationships are determined by functional community structure (i.e. trait distributions in a community) through two mutually non-exclusive mechanisms: (1) The dominance hypothesis (a.k.a. mass ratio effect) links ecosystem processes to the community weighted mean (CWM) of a relevant effect trait. (2) The complementarity hypothesis states that higher variability of a trait value within a community (FD) reflects niche complementarity enhancing ecosystem processes. While both mechanisms have been extensively studied in plant communities at small spatial scales, there is a need for global analyses across biomes. Here, a data driven approach to the BEF question is presented integrating a global vegetation plot database with a trait database and remotely sensed NDVI. The objective of this study was to simultaneously evaluate dominance and complementarity effects in grassland systems worldwide. Data on functional community structure (CWM and FD) were obtained from the global vegetation plot database sPlot in combination with the plant trait database TRY using 18 ecologically relevant plant traits. Ecosystem functioning at the selected sPlot sites (n = 2941) was measured as NDVI at a spatial resolution of 250m using the MODIS product MOD13Q (annual peak NDVI being a proxy of productivity). The landcover map Globcover2009 was used for characterization of landscape heterogeneity and landcover at each site, and plots in heterogeneous non-grassland pixels were discarded. Multiple regression commonality analysis was used to disentangle the contributions of complementarity and dominance effects to the variation in NDVI, while controlling for climate variables (adjusted R2 = 0.65). The results show that a plant community economics spectrum referring to the “fast-slow traits” of the dominant species in the community was the strongest predictor of the NDVI values in the grassland systems (dominance effect). Both, evident dominance and potential complementarity effects are discussed against the background of their interplay with abiotic factors and it is noted that especially precipitation seems to drive trait composition and productivity. Despite methodological shortcomings, the novel approach presented in this paper is considered a step towards a more integrative data-driven BEF debate at the global scale

Dinâmica da produção de alimentos no bioma pampa / Food production dynamic in the pampa biome

Oliveira, Tamara Esteves de January 2015 (has links)
This study analyzed the food production dynamics in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and its consequences for the changes in the natural grassland areas in the Pampa Biome. To this end, data for land use in the municipalities of Pampa Biome were collected from the Agricultural Censuses of 1975, 1985, 1995/1996 and 2006 as well as the food production data presented at the municipal agricultural and livestock reports published by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). To analyze the dynamics of the natural grasslands area of natural pastures, the micro-regions were compared every 10 years, the relative growth rate. The comparison between the municipalities was made by the adjusted mean the area allocated for the categories of land use. All municipalities were ranked as the area of the categories in its territory and its location by Multidimensional Scaling Not Metric (NMDS). The influence of the biome on land use was analyzed by ENVIFIT and the difference between the categories by PERMANOVA in Pampa Biome R. In software, there was a 26% decrease in natural pastures since 1975, presenting decrease of up to 12.5% between 1975 and 1985. Noteworthy are the rates of crops and artificial forest in which to temporary crops showed considerable growth from 1985 to 2005. The influence of the Pampa biome in the composition of land use categories remained between 14 and 15%, with significant differences between municipalities in the Pampa biome in all the years analyzed. Over time, it observed a significant movement of temporary crops and artificial forests that mainly between 1995 and 2005 begin to integrate the biome landscape. To face the challenge of maintaining agro-ecological activities threatened biomes in Brazil should invest in surveillance, developing monitoring systems capable of detecting subtle changes in land use. Moreover, the production of food in this state showed an increase in the amount produced. High growth for soy produced, being homogeneously distributed across the state was observed. Rice declined on the amount produced in the northern state and a significant concentration in the south and west of the state border. Cattle kept its stable herd with great concentration on the western border. Forestry grew in almost every state, with its production centered in the southeastern region of the state. The crops analyzed contributed to the state's GDP and are able, today and in the future, to meet the caloric demands of Rio Grande do Sul in the event purposes, if the current features of the gaucho agribusiness are maintained. These crops, soybean was the one that provided calories and financial return to the state, being able to meet local demand and provide surplus for exports. In all crops, except corn, increasing the amount of calories available was related to the increased planted area, requiring greater investments and incentives to increase crop yields.
