Si l’écriture des décors et du corps du personnage semble, dans un premier temps, renvoyer à une esthétique romanesque traditionnelle, tant par son ancrage réaliste que par son intention satirique, il apparaît bien vite que Guilloux se situe entre tradition et modernité. Les références intertextuelles et certains procédés métaleptiques soulignent la réflexion de l’auteur sur la représentation du réel et sur ses choix d’écriture. Sa fidélité aux modèles du passé n’entraîne pas le romancier sur la voie d’un rejet formel radical. Mais, profondément marqué par les catastrophes historiques du siècle, il s’éloigne des euphories romanesques antérieures. Les bonheurs d’espace n’existent pas plus que les bonheurs du corps. Toujours séparé du décor qui l’entoure, dans lequel il erre comme dans un labyrinthe, le personnage est encombré d’un corps lui rappelant sa condition de mortel. Enfermé dans des lieux qu’il ne parvient pas à habiter pleinement, le personnage est aussi prisonnier de son propre corps. De nombreux procédés de déréalisation mettent à distance l’illusion mimétique, et renforcent le sentiment tragique de l’existence. Pourtant, cette désaffection des décors et des corps n’entraîne pas l’anéantissement complet du personnage. Tout montre, au contraire, une singulière résistance des corps : les manifestations collectives, les déplacements, les voix. Une humanité fragile, toujours prête à disparaître, parfois délabrée ou simplement fêlée, parvient à s’affirmer. Le romancier en est dépositaire comme de tous les visages et de toutes les voix qu’il a croisés et dont il sent qu’il a « à répondre ». / If the writing of the settings and of the character seems, at first, to belong to traditional aesthetics in fiction, with its realism and satirical aim, it is soon clear that Guilloux stands between tradition and modernity. Intertextual references, metaleptical devices show the writer's reflectiveness when he represents reality and when he makes choices in his writing. His esteem of, his loyalty towards models of the past make the novelist shun radical forms. But deeply affected by the 20th century catastrophes, he leaves behind past euphoric certainties in novel writing. Happiness is not to be found, neither in space nor in the body. Always alienated from their surroundings, wandering through a maze -like environment, the characters are weighed down by their bodies which remind them of their mortality .Feeling hemmed in a space they cannot make their own, they are also prisoners of their bodies. Numerous de-realisation devices contribute to undermine the mimetic illusion and reinforce the tragic sense of existence. However this disaffection with space and body do not lead to the total annihilation of the characters. On the contrary, everything points to the singular resilience of the human body: collective actions, movements, voices. A fragile humanity, no doubt, always on the verge of extinction, sometimes dilapidated or cracked at least, yet finally asserting itself. The writer feels he has to account for it as well as for all the faces seen, all the voices heard, he is their repository.
