John Campbell (1806-1891) was one of about 370 Scottish handloom weavers who brought his technical and professional skills to Ontario in the mid- to late-nineteenth century. From 1859 to 1885, Campbell recorded customer orders for close to 54,000 yards of cloth in a 302-page account book, a document which reveals the relationship between producers and consumers in nineteenth-century rural Ontario. This thesis is a quantitative and qualitative examination of Campbell’s inputs and outputs using his account book, looms and textiles. The analysis of Campbell goes beyond the current historiography of handloom weavers by utilizing evidence from documentary sources and material culture contributing to the larger understanding of a self-employed artisan’s production. The case study of one weaver with this level of detail has not been performed to date and provides an important link for the partnership between handloom weavers and their customers. While Campbell’s customers provided a necessary infrastructure for him to operate by participating in pre- and post-weaving production, Campbell’s presence satisfied his customers’ needs not only for cloth, but a way of life that maintained economic and social stability for men and women in south-western Ontario. This thesis conveys the layers of complexity of weaver, technology and customers at the end of an era for handloom weaving in Ontario.

Para tanto, o cenário desta pesquisa é baseado na análise da produção artesanal no Brasil, estudo do trançado manual e suas atividades análogas e a inserção das diretrizes de metodologia e ferramentas de projeto neste contexto. O conhecimento atrelado à prática do trançado manual é transmitido de forma oral e geracional, e em razão disto, está sendo perdido progressivamente. Por este motivo, como consequência da sistematização do trançado, o resgate deste conhecimento também é contemplado na pesquisa. Os resultados da pesquisa indicaram a relação entre o trançado manual e a tecelagem, atividade têxtil que transforma fios em tecidos, transferindo a nomenclatura, representação numérica e gráfica da tecelagem para o trançado manual. Assim, o que se pretende nesta pesquisa é sugerir uma linguagem para o trançado manual, ainda inexistente na área, que permita o desenvolvimento de um banco de dados e, futuramente, novas armações / Abstract: This research aims to propose a language for the artisanal braiding, a handicraft technique practiced in different regions of Brazil that uses flexible materials to develop products like baskets and mats, in order to systematize the construction and to reaffirm the importance of this activity in social, cultural and economic aspects. Therefore, the background of this research is based on the analysis of handicraft production in Brazil, the study of the braiding and its similar activities and the insertion of guidelines from methodology and design tools in this context. The knowledge linked to this practice is transmitted orally and between generations, and because of this, is being gradually lost. For this reason, as a consequence of the systematization of braiding, the rescue of this knowledge is also covered in this survey. The results indicated the relationship between artisanal braiding and weaving, a textile activity that transforms yarn into fabric, transferring the numerical and graphical representation for weaving to braiding. So, what is intended in this research is to suggest a language for artisanal braiding, which is lacking in the area, in order to allow the development of a database and, in future, new patterns / Mestrado / Mecanica dos Sólidos e Projeto Mecanico / Mestra em Engenharia Mecânica

Trata-se de estudo de caso a partir da abordagem do design de superfícies têxteis sobre a tecelagem manual, baseada em corantes naturais do Cerrado, na região de Carmo de Rio Claro-FURNAS. Observa-se, nesse contexto, uma grande aplicação da tecnologia tradicional do tear manual aliado ao uso de fibras. Esse saber-fazer,transmitido oralmente, representa fração significativa da economia regional e, em grande medida, a identidade cultural nesse contexto. No entanto, observa-se a perda do conhecimento específico relacionado ao uso de corantes naturais baseado em vegetais do Cerrado, apesar de espécies existentes nesse contexto. Assim, como objetivo geral, pretende-se estudar e analisar os corantes naturais nativos dessa região e suas respectivas aplicações com vistas ao desenvolvimento dessa produção baseada em tecelagem manual, processo fundamental para a população da região e experiência importante como referência em políticas públicas locais e regionais / This is a case study from the design approach of textile surfaces on handloom weaving, natural dyes based in the Cerrado region of Carmo Rio Claro-FURNAS. It is observed that context a major application of traditional handloom technology coupled with the use of fibers.This know-how, transmitted orally, represents significant fraction of the regional economy and to a large extent, cultural identity in this context. However, there is the loss of specific knowledge related to the use of natural dyes based on the Cerrado vegetables, although extant species in this context. As general objective, we intend to study and analyze the natural dyes natives of this region and their applications with a view to developing this production based on manual weaving, a process critical to the region\'s population as a reference and important experience in local and regional public policies
