Advanced load modelling for power system studiesCollin, Adam John January 2013 (has links)
Although power system load modelling is a mature research area, there is a renewed interest in updating available load models and formulating improved load modelling methodologies. The main drivers of this interest are the introduction of new types of non-conventional (e.g. power electronic interfaced) loads, the requirement to operate power supply systems with increasing levels of renewable distributed generation and the implementation of various load control functionalities (e.g. demand side management). As the majority of existing load models do not allow for a full and precise analysis of these new operating conditions, it is essential to develop new load models and update load modelling techniques. This thesis presents a detailed study of modern loads, focussing on the requirements for their correct representation in power system analysis. The developed models of the individual loads are then combined using a new load aggregation methodology for developing aggregate load models, suitable for the analysis of both existing and future power supply systems (so called ’smart grids’). The methodology uses a circuit-based load modelling approach, as this allows reproduction of the instantaneous current waveforms of the modelled load for any given supply voltage. This approach retains all electrical characteristics of the loads and provides a more realistic representation of some important phenomena (e.g. harmonic cancellation and attenuation due to load and supply system interactions) which are often neglected in traditional load modelling procedures. Case studies of the UK residential and commercial load sectors are presented as illustrations of the load aggregation methodology. The results show significant short-term and long-term temporal variations in the load characteristics, which are not available or reported in the existing literature. This information allows for a more comprehensive assessment of demand-side management functionalities and correlation with locally connected distributed generation. Both of these effects are investigated in the thesis by quantifying the possible extent and range of changes in power system performance for some expected near future changes in load configurations and network operating conditions.

Gate Bias Control and Harmonic Load Modulation for a Doherty AmplifierSmith, Karla Jenny Isabella January 2009 (has links)
Linearity and efficiency are both critical parameters for radio frequency transmitter applications. In theory, a Doherty amplifier is a linear amplifier that is significantly more efficient than comparable conventional linear amplifiers. It comprises two amplifiers, connected at their outputs by a quarter-wave transformer. The main amplifier is always on, while the peaking amplifier is off during low power levels. Load modulation of the main amplifier occurs when the peaking amplifier is on due to the quarter-wave transformer, ensuring the main amplifier never enters saturation. This results in an efficiency characteristic that increases with respect to input power at twice the normal rate at low power levels, and plateaus to a high value at high power levels. However, in much of the research that has been done to-date, less-than-ideal results have been achieved (although efficiency was better than a conventional amplifier). It was decided to investigate the cause of the discrepancy between theoretical and practical results, and devise a method to counteract the problem.
It was discovered that the main cause of the discrepancy was non-ideal transistor gate-voltage to drain-current characteristics. The implementation of a gate bias control scheme based upon measured transistor transfer characteristics, and the desired main and peaking amplifier output currents, resulted in a robust method to ensure near-ideal results. A prototype amplifier was constructed to test the control scheme, and theoretical, simulated and measured results were well matched. The amplifier had a region of high efficiency in the high power levels (over 34% for the last 6 dB of input power), and the gain was nearly constant with respect to input power (between 4 and 5 dB over the dynamic range).
Furthermore, it was decided to investigate the role harmonics play within the Doherty amplifier. A classical implementation shunts unwanted harmonics to ground within the main and peaking amplifiers. However, odd harmonics generated by the peaking amplifier can be used to operate the main amplifier like a class F amplifier. This means its supply voltage can be lowered, without the amplifier entering saturation, and the efficiency of the Doherty amplifier can be increased without a detrimental effect on the its linearity. A prototype amplifier was constructed to test this theory, and gave good results, with better efficiency than that of a conventional amplifier, and a constant gain with respect to input power (between 6.4 dB and 6.5 dB over the dynamic range).

São construídos modelos completos e detalhados dos principais componentes do sistema, com representação completa e explícita dos sistemas CA e CC, bem como das características não-lineares dos conversores de potência, permitindo uma completa análise dos efeitos harmônicos no sistema, inclusive no que diz respeito aos acoplamentos harmônicos. A modelagem proposta visa suprir as limitações geralmente encontradas nas metodologias que se baseiam no domínio da frequência para a simulação de sistemas CC, desenvolvendo uma ferramenta eficiente para análise desses sistemas no domínio da frequência. O sistema permite a análise de elos CC de alta complexidade, como conversores de 12 pulsos e acoplamentos assíncronos. A validação do modelo desenvolvido é realizada através de simulações comparativas no domínio do tempo pelo ATP (Alternative Transients Program). / This dissertation presents the development of a new mathematic methodology to simulate and to analyze DC networks integrated to AC power systems. The proposed methodology is developed in frequency domain and it is based on three-phase harmonic current injection equations structured in a Newton-Raphson unified matrix system. This scheme allows the complete and explicit representation of integrated DC and AC systems, as well as the modeling of power converters non-linear characteristics. The agility and robustness in computational simulation using the proposed model are guaranteed by sparse and memory management techniques. The developed methodology presents an efficient harmonic simulation tool that overcomes the limitations of existing methods for integrated AC/DC systems simulation. The proposed model can simulate HVDC system of high complexity such as the ones based on 12-pulses converters and used to interconnect unbalanced and asynchronous AC networks. The validation is accomplished by comparative simulations between the developed methodology in frequency domain against the ATP (Alternative Transients Program) in time domain.

On the dynamics of footbridges : A theoretical approach and a comparison between running and walking loadsColmenares, Daniel January 2021 (has links)
The dynamic behaviour of lightweight footbridges is often susceptible to HumanInduced Loads (HILs). Generally HILs are taken into account as moving harmonicfunctions in which the loading frequency represents the step frequency of the pedestrians.In this way, there may be resonance if the loading frequencies fall within therange of the natural frequencies of the bridge, potentially compromising the serviceabilitylimit state of the structure. Therefore, it is important to understand how toaddress and model HILs in the context of lightweight and slender structures. Furthermore,interesting effects can be considered in the field of footbridge dynamics,such as the Human Structure Interaction (HSI) effect. The HSI effect can be understoodwithin a framework in which pedestrians behave as Tuned Mass Dampers(TMDs), possibly modifying the dynamic behaviour of the footbridge. In addition,the evaluation of the dynamic response of a footbridge is usually made through atime consuming dynamic analysis using the Finite Element Method (FEM). Mostof the analysis of this type of slender structures rely on a prescribed stationary harmonicloading scenario, and this is usually done in the context of a walking crowdevent and not much attention is given to running load events.The aims of this research project are to study the influence of running and walkingloads on the dynamic response of footbridges as well as to investigate and developa closed-form method in order to simulate the dynamic behaviour of footbridgessubjected to HILs. This has been achieved by comparing different approachesin order to simulate running load events for a small number of pedestrians withrespect to experimental results (Paper I). In addition, the simply supported beamand the clamped-clamped beam (Paper II) are studied when subjected to a movingharmonic load in a closed-form framework. Then, a comparison between normalwalking and normal running conditions is made. Finally, a general closed-formsolution for the moving harmonic load problem (Paper III) is developed using the2D Bernoulli–Euler beam theory for a continuous beam system on elastic supports.The results from the study indicate that running is more critical than walking fora single pedestrian crossing, despite the fact that it is easier to achieve a steadystate condition in a normal walking event than in a normal running event. Finally,the general solution of the moving harmonic load problem is found and it can beused to solve any load spectra in the time domain, with its static component, for ageneral multi-span beam system. / Slanka och lätta gångbroar är ofta känsliga för dynamisk belastning från fotgängare.Dessa laster betraktas ofta som harmoniska funktioner där lastfrekvensenberor på stegfrekvensen. En analytisk lösning för rörliga harmoniska laster redovisasför fallet fritt upplagd och fast inspänd balk (artikel 2), med vilken inverkan av gångochlöparlaster jämförs. En mer generell analytisk lösning för rörliga harmoniskalaster (artikel 3) baseras på Bernoulli-Euler balkteori för kontinuerliga balkar påeftergivliga upplag.Resultaten från föreliggande arbete visar att för en enskild fotgängare är fallet medlöparlast mer kritiskt än gånglast, trots att det är lättare att uppnå ett fortvarighetstillståndför gånglaster jämfört med löparlaster. generator and an induction generator operating in parallel on an isolated system, supplying a
non-linear load. The main contributions of this research-study consist of identifying and
quantifying the oscillations that non-linear load cause on the electric variables of synchronous
and induction generators, such as, the electromagnetic conjugate that presents oscillations of
sixth harmonic due to the distorted currents. / Este trabalho mostra os efeitos da poluição harmônica em um gerador síncrono de polos
salientes e um gerador de indução operando em paralelo em um sistema isolado suprindo
carga não linear. As principais contribuições deste trabalho consistem em identificar e
quantificar as oscilações que a carga não linear utilizada provoca nas variáveis elétricas dos
geradores síncronos e dos geradores de indução, tal como, o conjugado eletromagnético que
apresenta oscilações de sexto harmônico devido as correntes distorcidas.

The diploma thesis deals with dynamic analysis of cable-stayed steel pedestrian footbridge. The dynamic response of pedestrian-induced vibration was studied. The response of structure exeeded standard acceptance limit. Due to the effect of installed Tuned Mass Damper was studied. Motion equations of single and two degree of freedom model were solved in program MATLAB and the results were compared with numeric model in ANSYS.
