The rapid increase in HIV-infections is changing the face of modern society. The number of HIV/AIDS orphans for sub-Saharan Africa is expected to increase to 18, 67 million in 2010. Education has a pivotal role to play in effectively dealing with the effects of the pandemic, as well as creating awareness among learners. The focus of this study is to explore educators’ perceptions of teaching learners about HIV/AIDS and of schools as care-giving centres for orphans and vulnerable children. The HIV/AIDS education curriculum has been introduced in a milieu of change and restructuring in South African education, presenting particular challenges for educators. Views of patients on a group diabetic education programme using motivational interviewing in underserved communities in South Africa : qualitative study

Thesis (MFamMed)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Background Diabetes is a significant contributor to the burden of disease in South Africa and to the reasons for encounter in primary care. There is little structured and systematic education of patients that supports self-care. This study was a qualitative assessment of a diabetes group education programme in Community Health Centres of the Cape Town Metropolitan District. The programme offered four sessions of group education and was delivered by trained health promoters using motivational interviewing as a communication style. The aim of the study was to evaluate the programme by exploring the experiences of the patients who attended. Methods Thirteen individual in depth interviews were conducted. Each patient had attended the educational programme and came from a different health centre in the intervention arm of a larger randomised controlled trial. The interviews were audiotaped, transcribed and then analyzed using the framework approach. Results Patients expressed that they gained useful new knowledge about diabetes. The use of educational material was experienced positively and enhanced recall and understanding of information. The general experience was that the health promoters were competent, utilised useful communication skills and the structure of sessions was suitable. Patients reported a change in behaviour especially with diet, physical activity, medication and foot care. There were organizational and infrastructural problems experienced specifically with regards to the suitability of the venue and communication of information regarding the timing and location of the sessions. Conclusion This study supports the wider implementation of this programme following consideration of recommendations resulting from patient feedback. However, only patients who attended the educational sessions were interviewed and the results of the larger controlled trial must still be obtained.

The media, through development communication and edutainment, plays a critical role in the transformation of societies. In line with this, this thesis discusses the extent to which commercially driven prosocial soap operas can provide a platform for public health messaging, in the context of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa, for antiretroviral treatment (ART) and for encouraging ART adherence to foster national development. Furthermore, this thesis examined the potential of celebrities as HIV/AIDS ambassadors and the potential of both fictional characters and ‘real-life’ celebrities to disseminate these health messages. Although the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa is stabilising, this is not the time to relax the communication around the disease, particularly regarding adherence to ARVs, considering that South Africa has the largest ARV rollout in the world. The qualitative methodological approach taken for this thesis is a three-step approach examining the intended message, the text and the appropriated message by viewers. Firstly, a thematic content analysis of an episode of Isidingo, that illustrated Nandipha as HIV-positive and the side-effects that came with her ART adherence, and the 3Talk interview with Lesego Motsepe, where she announced that she was weaning herself off ART, was done in order to understand the intended health messaging in the soap opera and the health message disseminated by an HIV-positive actress with regards to ART. Thereafter interview responses by the production team as well as by HIV-positive viewers, using ARVs, were thematised. In addition media texts which provided commentary on the use of a celebrity as a HIV-positive role model were examined. In doing this, this thesis has offered up the meanings of how HIV-positive women taking ARVs and living in Makana experience and understand the media, particularly health messaging relating to ARVs. The findings of this study suggest that commercial soap operas are the perfect platform to address HIV/AIDS and that prosocial health messaging regarding ARV adherence is still necessary in this country. Soap operas have the potential to have an educational angle. Although, HIV-positive individuals serve as better role models as they are authentic; given human nature, fictional characters, such as Nandipha Matabane in Isidingo, may be more sustainable role models as their message can be scientifically-based and well-researched. Realistic characters serve as role models whose behaviour is to be emulated. Soap operas appeal to a wide audience and so storylines can be tailor-made according to the times and the needs in terms of health issues and messaging. Thus, soap operas are not a single platform but rather one which can be exploited to maximum advantage for public health messaging.

Informing an ICT intervention for HIV and AIDS education at Rhodes University

This study captures the process and methods used in selecting and organising content for an ontology. In the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) field ontology refers to a way of organising and storing information and facilitating interaction between the system and its users. Ontologies are being used more frequently to provide services that deal with complex information. In this study, I record my experience of developing content for an HIV and AIDS ontology for Rhodes University students. Using several different methods, I started the process of selecting and organising HIV and AIDS information, free of scientific jargon and prescriptive language, and consisting only of relevant information. I used data derived from interviews with six HIV and AIDS experts to develop questions for a survey that was open to all Rhodes University students. The 689 people who responded to the survey indicated that they needed more information on testing, treatment and living with HIV. Responses also showed that students had a lot of information on HIV prevention and transmission. Four focus group discussions revealed that students were tired of repetitions of the „same‟ information on HIV and AIDS and wanted to know more about life after contracting HIV. Using this data, I propose some guidelines to populate HIV and AIDS ontology. Ontologies can be customized for particular groups of users, for example according to gender, race, year of study etc. Another advantage of the ontology is that it can be expanded or contracted depending on the scope of one‟s intervention.

Knowledge, practice and attitudes of primary school children towards healthy diet in Dikgale Village, Limpopo Province, South Africa

(Curriculum Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2019 / The aim of this study was to investigate knowledge, attitudes and practices of primary school children towards healthy diet in Dikgale Village, Limpopo Province, South Africa. This study was an intervention study at eight primary schools in Dikgale Village. The study used both qualitative and quantitative research where mixed methods research design. A total of 324 participants consisting of Grades 6 and 7 males and females was purposively selected. These participants were divided into experiment and control group after pre-test but before the intervention. This study used a 27-item questionnaire which covered, knowledge on healthy diet, attitudes, practices, subjective norm and self-efficacy questions as well as focus group interviews. The main findings of the study comprise the following: (i) Learners in the experiment condition did not reflect more health-related practices (F(1.315)=0.20; p>887), i.e., when considering co-variables and changes in health attitude, subjective norm and self-efficacy; and (ii) After intervention, there was a significant increase (F(1.315)=115.72; p<0.001) in health-related knowledge on the experiment group, i.e., when considering co-variables and changes in health attitude, subjective norm and self-efficacy. In addition to this significant increase, 58.3% of the differences between both groups seemed related to the intervention with regard to changes in knowledge acquisition. However, there was no significant increase on both health knowledge and health practices on the control group. The results suggested that, even if there can be changes in knowledge due to intervention, healthy practices may be difficult to change mainly because knowledge alone cannot decrease the prevalence of health-related conditions. As a result, this study suggest that the curriculum should cover Food knowledge practice so as to persuade learners to practice healthy diet. Also, School Management Teams (SMTs) and School Governing Bodies (SGBs) should play their role in emphasizing the importance of Food-Based Dietary Guidelines in schools. Future interventions are therefore encouraged to include a moderate intensity intervention by trained professionals and feasibility of involving educators, SGBs and SMTs, particularly in policy adherence. Therefore, this study proposed a healthy food intervention strategy incorporating the Theory of Planned Behaviour in order to justify the knowledge, attitude and practices of children in healthy diet. Intervention should adopt the Training Partnership Model wherein children, parents, educators are trained by health professional on adherence to healthy diet. / Vlaamse Interuniversitaire Raad (VLIR)
