If on the one hand the narrative fragmentation is not new, on the other, the mirroring undertaken between its various pieces inserts the narrative in an undecidable place, refusing theories and binarisms in which the colonial world was engineered. In addition, there is a constant flirtation with referentiality, highlighted by the metaficcionality of a narrator self-conscious of the relativity of truth. For this reason, we pursue the hypothesis that Partes de África refuses the traditional speech forms which are identified with the idea of the writing’s ability to apprehend the truth about a subject or about his own time, as is the case with traditional history, the autobiography or the novels of eighteenth and nineteenth century. It is evident in this novel, a narrative way of relating to reality that is typical of the contemporary world, which conceives the notion of subject and history as categories constantly changing because they are hopelessly being modified by the future. Subject and history are an eternal construction and, to show this dynamic character, the narrator makes use of strategies used by traditional speeches to create an illusion of reality just to destabilize them, presenting them rather an effect of reality. / Partes de África, do escritor português Helder Macedo, é intrigante devido à fragmentação e profusão de discursos que agrega ao unir diversas vozes, memória, história, autobiografia e ficção naquilo que o narrador chama mosaico incrustado de espelhos. Se por um lado a fragmentação da narrativa não constitui novidade, por outro, o espelhamento empreendido entre seus diversos cacos inscreve a narrativa em um lugar indecidível, que recusa teorizações e os binarismos no qual o mundo colonial foi arquitetado. Além disso, há um constante flerte com a referencialidade, posto em evidência pela metaficcionalidade de um narrador autoconsciente da relatividade da verdade. Por esta razão, perseguimos a hipótese de que Partes de África recusa as formas de discurso tradicionais que compactuam com a ideia da escrita ser capaz de captar a verdade a respeito de um sujeito ou de seu próprio tempo, como é o caso da história tradicional, da autobiografia ou dos romances do século XVIII e XIX. Evidencia-se, neste romance, um modo de relacionamento da narrativa com a realidade muito próprio da contemporaneidade, que encara a noção de sujeito e de história como categorias em constante mutação por estarem irremediavelmente sendo modificadas pelo futuro. Sujeito e história são uma eterna construção e, para mostrar esse caráter dinâmico, o narrador faz uso de estratégias utilizadas pelos discursos tradicionais para criar uma ilusão de realidade apenas para desestabilizá-las, apresentando-nos, antes, um efeito de realidade.

Dessa forma, deseja-se investigar a construção ficcional do autor-narrador nas narrativas Pedro e Paula e Vícios e Virtudes, de Helder Macedo. A intenção é mostrar uma articulação entre a nova literatura portuguesa que ainda preserva certas particularidades, mas, por outro lado, dialoga com características marcantes da pós-modernidade. Sendo assim, tentaremos encontrar sentido nas marcas intertextuais, nos deslizamentos da voz do autor, na desconstrução da história oficial, no contato entre o discurso histórico e o literário. A análise das narrativas está ancorada nos pressupostos pós-estruturalistas e pós-modernos que entendem o sujeito inserido no discurso como linguagem, construção estética pensada em sua essencialidade. / This dissertation aims to conduct further studies related to postmodernity, preponderantly analyzing metafictionality as its hallmark. This study investigates the fictional construction of the author-narrator in the narratives Pedro e Paula and Vícios e Virtudes, by Helder Macedo. The intention is to show a link between the new Portuguese literature which still preserves certain particularities, but on the other hand, speaks to the remarkable characteristics of postmodernity. Therefore, we will try to find meaning in the intertextual marks, in the author’s voice slips, in the deconstruction of the official history, in the contact between literary and historical discourses. The analysis of the narrative is anchored in poststructuralist and postmodern assumptions which understand the subject inserted in discourse as language, aesthetic construction thought in its essentiality.

Para tanto, faremos uso de um corpus de ensaios de autoria de Helder Macedo e que tratam da tradição literária evocada em seus romances. Deste modo, pretendemos interpretar seus livros a partir dos critérios adotados pelo próprio autor para interpretar as obras ficcionais de sua eleição. / Abstract: The present thesis intends to undertake a reading of the novels by the Portuguese author Helder Macedo -- Partes de África, Pedro e Paula, Vícios e virtudes and Sem nome -taking into account three major points of analysis: the elaboration of a capricious narrator who affiliates himself to a certain literary tradition; the appropriation of intertextual references and the metafictional discourse; the narrative structure built up from oppositions or antinomies, present in all levels of his novels. In order to do so, we'll make use a corpus of essays by Helder Macedo concerning the literary tradition evoked in his novels.
