Social Network and Health Seeking Behavior of Men of West African Descent

Odewale, Opeyemi 01 January 2017 (has links)
Men are less likely than women to seek help from health services providers regarding the health issues they face. In the United States, of the various race/ethnicity populations, Black American men are least likely to seek health related help, which is reflected in the substantially higher mortality and morbidity rates in Black American men compared to other populations. Guided by the social epidemiological framework, this study examined the relationship between social network measure and health help-seeking behavior among foreign-born and U.S.-born Black American men of West African descent residing in the state of Rhode Island. A cross-sectional study design with convenience sampling method was used in executing the study. A questionnaire that was developed based on validated instruments such as the General Help-Seeking Questionnaire (GHSQ) and Social Network Index (SNI) was employed in collecting data. Ordinal logistic regression and the Chi-square test of independence were used to assess the associations between health help-seeking behavior and social networks. Findings revealed a significant relationship between social network measure and selected categories of general help-seeking measures. For example, foreign-born participants compared to their U.S-born counterparts were more likely to have a high social network size, with respect to future intent to seek help from both formal and informal help sources. The results of this study may drive social change by providing evidence that is vital to our understanding of the health-related help seeking behavior of Black American men in general and Black American men of West African descent in particular.

Motivational processes involved in academic help seeking and help avoidance

Marchand, Gwen Catherine 01 January 2004 (has links)
During middle childhood, help seeking and avoidance are two ways children deal with academic problems. For this study, the dominant view of help seeking as a strategy of self-regulated learning was elaborated to consider it a way of coping framed within the Self-System Model of Motivational Development. This framework allows for the consideration of (1) the opposite of help seeking (help avoidance) as a motivated way of coping, (2) the central role of teachers, and (3) the operation of multiple self-system processes in shaping students' coping behaviors. Self-report, teacher-report, and school record data from 765 3rd through 61 h grade students and their teachers were analyzed to determine the structure of help seeking and avoidance, the antecedents and consequences of these ways of coping, and developmental differences that may account for age-related changes in coping. Data were available from two time points, the fall and spring of one academic year, allowing for concurrent and change over time analyses.

Domácí násilí ve stejnopohlavních vztazích se zaměřením na proces hledání pomoci u obětí / Domestic violence within same-sex relationships with a focus on victims' help-seeking

Heřmánková, Zlata January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to introduce the topic of domestic violence in same-sex relationships with a focus on victims' help-seeking. First, it defines domestic violence, describes its cycle, forms and consequences for the victim. Second, it expands on this topic in the context of same-sex relationships, its prevalence, correlates, theories and myths. Third, it deals with the phenomenon of help-seeking of domestic violence victims and the specifics of this process regarding victims of same-sex domestic violence. Eventually, it briefly describes the situation in the Czech Republic and introduces selected examples of good practice. The empirical part of this thesis presents a qualitative research project in the form of interviews aiming to explore factors affecting the help-seeking process of victims of same- sex domestic violence in the Czech Republic. The data were analysed using the method of thematic analysis. Several factors emerged from the analysis, some of which are common in domestic violence victims in general and others are characteristic for victims in same-sex relationships. These are specific barriers in the help-seeking process related to victims' non- heterosexual orientation and to the fact that they experienced domestic violence in a same-sex relationship. Keywords domestic...

ATTITUDES, BELIEFS, AND STRATEGIES OF AFRICAN INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS TOWARDS MENTAL HEALTH: A NARRATIVE CASE STUDY

Kapatamoyo, Kombe Mable Kateule 01 May 2022 (has links) (PDF)
Mental health may be defined as a state of wellbeing which affects all aspects of an individual's emotions, social behavior, and psychological behavior. As a dimension of health, it is a vital aspect of an individual’s existence, and it affects their quality of life and daily activities. However, like physical health, there may be a need to maintain or improve one's mental health when challenges are present. Therefore, in this study, using a qualitative narrative case study approach, I explored the mental health attitudes and beliefs of African International Students. I examined strategies they used to address mental health challenges faced as they studied in the United States. I also utilized the Health Belief Model (HBM) as the conceptual framework to address discrimination and other social environment obstacles that African International Students faced when seeking help. As part of the study, I collected data from a sample of African International Students studying at a mid-sized Midwestern university and analyzed the information to determine factors that influenced a student’s attitudes toward mental health. As the researcher, my desire was to utilize the results of the study to assist with future interventions in this particular group of students.

Asian American Social Network Formation, Help-Seeking Behaviors, and Interactions with the Healthcare System

Amin, Samta January 2021 (has links)
The duty of healthcare providers is to go beyond the principles of beneficence and non-maleficence to create a more equitable health system in which a patient’s health outcomes are not determined by their race, ethnicity, language skills, or social or cultural capital. One step in creating this equitable health system is addressing the unique health challenges faced by a rapidly growing part of America – Asian Americans. As of the 2018 census, there are approximately 23 million Asian alone-or-in-combination residents in the United States. This thesis will examine how Asian Americans form social networks, the impact that social networks have on health behaviors and outcomes, help-seeking behaviors, and barriers and challenges faced when interacting with the healthcare system. I will then offer possible solutions for healthcare systems and individual providers on how they can improve interactions with Asian patients, provide culturally responsive care, and address individual and systemic barriers. / Urban Bioethics

Beliefs about seeking and receiving help: Measurement of the recipient's perspective on helping behavior

Victoria Sharon Scotney (13978248) 31 October 2022 (has links)

To fully understand the nature of help, we need to study it from both the helper’s and the recipient’s perspectives, yet the recipient's perspective of help has been often overlooked. This study aimed to identify and measure people’s general beliefs about seeking and receiving help. The first study used thematic analysis to identify broad belief themes from 81 participants’ written thoughts and experiences of help. The five belief themes were then used to generate a pool of items to measure general beliefs about seeking and receiving help. The second study used a split-half sample to assess the factor structure and identify items to remove using EFA and CFA. Ten distinct, though related, subscales of the five belief themes were retained, and these items were then assessed through a content validation study, which supported the definitional correspondence and distinctiveness of the items to their scales. While further validation of the measure needs to be conducted, there is promising evidence of the scale’s content coverage compared to previous scales, reliability, and content validity of the identified subscales.
